Gladiator sandals and ballerina pumps are taking centre stage in 2025's fashion landscape.

Like any other iconic fashion piece, Gladiator sandals and pumps have stomped their way back into the fashion scene, and this time, they are trendier than ever.
This year's fashion scene has seen trends like flared jeans and bandage dresses make a comeback, and millennials are rocking these items most fashionably.
If you've ever owned a pair of Gladiator sandals or pumps, consider yourself an iconic fashionista because you have likely braved the fashion trenches and emerged victorious.
These shoes were once very much criticised by many the same way they have been admired. You were either so daring and fashion forward for sporting them, or your fashion sense was definitely questioned.
Gladiator sandals
Gladiator sandals have their roots in ancient Rome, where they were worn by gladiators, hence the name. These strappy sandals were designed for functionality, providing support and protection for the feet during battles.
Fast forward to the present time, and they have become trendier and more stylish. Not only can they be worn as sandals, but they also come in heels. They have also been making a comeback on the fashion runways because that's where most trends start, right?
This time around, they are trendier than ever, with designers incorporating less bold buckles and less chunky straps compared to the early 2000s statement-making details. They come in different styles, such as the mid-calf designs and the ankle strap design.
The strappy shoes strutted their way down several Spring/Summer 2025 runways, making appearances at Dior, Isabel Marant, and Alberta Ferretti, among others.
Celebrities like Tyla have taken gladiator shoes from the runway shows to street style. She has been spotted wearing stylish knee-high gladiator heels in most of her music videos and on red carpets.
Ballerina pumps
Ballerina pumps, on the other hand, have a more delicate history. They originated from the ballet world, where dancers wore lightweight, minimalist shoes that allowed for flexibility and movement.
Over time, designers adapted this style for the fashion world, creating dainty, delicate shoes that added a touch of elegance to any outfit.
We used to have jelly ballet pumps, and those were trendy; if you did not have a pair, you definitely felt the FOMO. As they return to the fashion scene, they have become trendier and versatile, from mesh designs to satin.
Today, ballet flats are the ultimate winter and summer work shoe, striking the perfect balance between comfort and professionalism. They are also easy to style and can pair surprisingly well with pants or dresses.

From Royal AM to Highlanders AM? Mama Joy awaits MaMkhize's call

Waiting Royal AM superfan "Mama Joy" Chauke says she's waiting to hear from Shauwn Mkhize about her membership to become a Mbabane Highlanders AM supporter. Photo: Instagram Image: Instagram What does the future hold for Royal AM superfan Mama Joy Chauke now that the club have been kicked out of the PSL after owner Shauwn Mkhize's financial misgivings? South Africa's favourite super fan says for now, she's waiting to get word from MaMkhize about the KwaZulu-Natal club's future. "I'm still with Royal AM. We are just waiting for her to give us the green light to follow her there, otherwise, I will remain a Royal AM supporter until she announces that Royal AM is no more," Mama Joy said on Sunday, according to KickOff. "She will inform us if we can support Highlanders. They must treat her well because, as their president, she will attend every game. She added she remains fully committed to Royal AM – at least for now. "Personally, I'm still a card-carrying member of Royal AM, so I will become a Highlanders AM supporter once I receive their supporters' card. Interest from Eswatini is already pouring in. "I have been receiving many calls from Highlanders AM supporters in Eswatini, inviting me to join them. They want me to be part of their fanbase. Yesterday, I dominated all the front pages in Eswatini. And while Highlanders is a much larger club in that region, Mama Joy insists her loyalty is still tied to the original team – until told otherwise. "Highlanders is a huge team in Eswatini, with many more supporters compared to Royal AM, and they have qualified for the top eight. However, I am waiting for the Royal AM management to tell me what our next steps will be." Last week, the Durban businesswoman insisted on Robert Marawa's show on 947 that she did not buy the Eswatini club after she was appointed as their president. After her unveiling as their new president, she immediately rebranded the club Mbabane Highlanders AM. Mbabane Highlanders are the most successful team in Eswatini with 13 league titles to their name. However, they haven't been champions since 2001. In April, the PSL voted to kick MaMkhize's Royal AM out of the league. Royal AM had been placed under auction to recoup some of the R40 million that Mkhize owed to SARS. After an extensive bidding process, Durban businessman Roy Moodley appeared to have won the race to purchase the club, but after he could not cough up the funds, the sale collapsed, and the league decided to kick the club out. Miss SA 2025 POSTPONED amid rumours pageant is 'over'

Miss South Africa – or Miss SA – has officially postponed its 2025 crowning ceremony, just days after CEO Stephanie Weil stepped down. The news has fuelled rumours amongst pageant fans who believe the end may be in sight for the national competition. The pageant has yet to announce its Top 30 finalists. MISS SA POSTPONED! In a press statement posted on pageant fanpage @misssafandom, the Miss SA organisation announced that the finale would be postponed from August to a later date in 2025. This was one to 'ensure the alignment with international and other global events.' The statement added: 'The organisation, through its affiliated companies, aims to broaden the reach and impact of the pageant and its contestants. Organisers stated that Miss SA would be rebranded to include the pillars of entrepreneurship, job creation, cultural awareness, and social cohesion. The postponement of Miss SA comes after two key figures have left the organisation – CEO Stephanie Weil and Creative Director Werner Wessels. Although the organisation has relinquished its licence to Miss Supranational and Miss World, it is still expected to participate in Miss Universe, which takes place on 21 November in Thailand. Pageant fanpage @missuupdates asked in the comment section: 'How does it align with international pageants if there is less preparation? The pageant is in November!' Another, @missuniversewishlist questioned: Will the winner end up going to Miss Universe?'. Miss SA organisation was previously owned by Sun International, a hotel and event conglomerate in South Africa. In 2019, Sun International sold the rights to the pageant to Weil Entertainment, whose owner is CEO Stephanie Weil. Stephanie Weil has stepped down as Miss SA CEO. Who will fill in her shoes?Images via Instagram: @stephweil Now, the pageant has been taken under the wing of Africa Fashion International, which has vowed to 'embark on this strategic journey together, leveraging our unique strengths to drive growth and innovation.' Art that defies age in Fairland

On July 19, Lillian Gray Fine Art School hosted their Adult Art Exhibition. The art studio served as the best venue for their adult students to boldly display the pieces of art they had worked on in the year thus far. For many of these students, art was a forgotten form of expression, one they had tucked away, having let time, and life with all its inevitable changes, come in the way of. Read more: Soaring high in his journey through art Co-owner and art teacher Adele Jansen van Rensburg shared with the paper why it's never too late to go back to art or start your journey. 'It's a space for anyone who wants to step back into their creativity, or for those who have never picked up a paint brush.' Jansen van Rensburg added that her favourite students were the ones who had never tried art. The artist said that one is never too old to pick up the easel and paint brush. 'I have seen many retired people who neglected their creativity for years, go back to pick up art again.' Jansen van Rensburg says one suppressing their art and creativity is akin to a dam with no fresh water. As she sees it, creativity needs to flow like a river. 'I love seeing the process of someone creating art. I also love when someone bravely comes to school, eager to start their art journey again, even with all their insecurities.' Jansen van Rensburg said witnessing their bravery, and their struggles, it's inspiring that they keep arriving for classes, most importantly for the art.
