Aunt To Raise Infant Orphaned By Himachal's Mandi Cloudburst Tragedy
Ten months old Neetika, who lost her parents in the flash floods triggered by the recent cloudburst in Mandi district, will now be raised by her father's younger sister.
The infant was orphaned after a cloudburst struck Talwara village of Parwara panchayat in Mandi district on the intervening night of June 30 and July 1. Her father Ramesh (31) died, while her mother Radha Devi (24) and grandmother Purnu Devi (59) are still missing.
On the tragic night, Ramesh had stepped out to divert the flow of water entering the house, while his wife and mother followed to help. They never returned.
Their neighbour Prem Singh found the infant crying alone in the house and informed Balwant, a cousin of Ramesh who worked as a personal security officer for former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur.
After the 'Shudi' ceremony was performed on the 13th day of the family's death, the relatives decided that Neetika will be raised by her aunt Kirna Devi, who already has a son and lives in Shikauri village, about 20 kilometres away from Talwara village, Balwant told PTI on Monday.
He said several people across the country and abroad had expressed willingness to adopt Neetika after hearing of the tragedy.
"We are thankful to them. But we feel emotional and cannot give the only surviving member of the family for adoption," Balwant said.
Earlier, Ramesh's elder sister Tara Devi had taken the child under her care. But later on Sunday it was decided that Kirna Devi would raise Neetika, after she insisted that her village has a conducive atmosphere for the child's education.
The child was also offered admission in Sainik School after Class 6, Balwant added.
With several people coming forward to help the infant, two bank accounts were opened in her name in the Himachal Co-operative Bank and Punjab National Bank. The money deposited in these accounts will be reserved for her education and she can access it when she turns 18, officials said.
Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur visited Neetika on Saturday and enquired about her well-being. He has urged the state government to provide her benefits under the Chief Minister's Sukh Aashray Yojana.
Under this scheme, the state government offers comprehensive care to thousands of orphans and destitute children -- designated as 'children of the state -- effectively acting as their guardian.
Meanwhile, search operations are still underway to trace 27 people who were washed away after 10 cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides destroyed in various parts of Mandi district on June 30 night. Around 15 people had died in the tragedy.

Jaipur, Jul 19 (PTI) Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Saturday inaugurated the 435 MW Gorbea Solar Power Project in Rajasthan, terming it a model of speed, sustainability, and inclusive development. Developed by Zelestra India, the project was completed in eight months and spans 1,250 acres. It will generate 755 GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power 1.28 lakh homes while cutting 7.05 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions. The plant operates under a 25-year PPA with Solar Energy Corporation of India, according to a statement. Speaking at the event, Joshi praised Rajasthan's leadership in India's energy transition, stating that nearly 70 per cent of the state's power capacity now comes from renewables, with over 35.4 GW installed capacity — 29.5 GW solar and 5.2 GW wind. He also highlighted that the land for the plant was leased from farmers, offering them steady income. Over 700 locals were employed during construction. Joshi credited Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for fast-tracking clean energy reforms and investments, including the state's Integrated Clean Energy and Green Hydrogen policies, and rooftop solar installations under central schemes. CM Naidu calls for plastic-free Andhra, links excessive use to cancer risk
Tirupati, Jul 19 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday called for the elimination of plastic to protect the environment, claiming that 'excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer". Addressing a meeting in Tirupati as part of the 'Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra' initiative, Naidu said that plastic has become 'the biggest demon" threatening the environment. The vision lays out a comprehensive framework for economic advancement, social equity, environmental sustainability, and governance excellence. 'To protect the environment, we must chase away this plastic demon. Excessive use of plastic can lead to cancer… No one should fall victim to this," the chief minister said. From toothbrushes to the plates we eat from, he pointed out that plastic has become a part of daily life, adding that common items like water bottles, cups, and covers are harmful. He further claimed that 'plastic pollution is contaminating the soil", hindering the percolation of rainwater, and causing other environmental issues. Naidu announced plans to make the state secretariat plastic-free by August 15, extend this initiative to all municipalities by October 2, and implement it across the state by December. Calling on every citizen to be part of the 'Swachh Andhra' mission by keeping their homes and surroundings clean, he also promised to clear all piled-up garbage across the state by October. The chief minister noted that the TDP-led NDA government had approved solar panel installations for 20 lakh homes, turning rooftops, offices, and fields into hubs of solar energy. 'I'm focusing on green energy. With global warming triggering multiple challenges, green energy is the only solution," he said. Criticising YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, Naidu alleged that the latter 'created chaos" during a recent visit to Bangarupalyam by 'dumping mangoes" on the road while meeting farmers. Naidu said the NDA alliance government came to the rescue of mango farmers by ensuring a payment of Rs 12,000 per tonne—Rs 4,000 from the government and Rs 8,000 from buyers. Earlier, during a visit to an integrated waste processing plant at Tukivakam village in Tirupati, the chief minister directed officials to make Andhra Pradesh 'a national model in waste processing and utilisation."
