Jeddah Tower: Everything You Need to Know

What do Philadelphia City Hall, the Empire State Building, and the Burj Khalifa have in common? They've all held the title of the world's tallest skyscraper. And eventually Jeddah Tower, a neo-futuristic skyscraper planned in Saudi Arabia, will join the ranks among these iconic structures. Designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the structure will stand at 3,281 feet tall when completed in the next four to five years, nearly 11 times the height of the Statue of Liberty. 'The design for Jeddah Tower is rooted in the symbolism of Saudi Arabia while looking toward the future by being technologically expressive,' explain Smith and Gill in a joint statement to AD . 'Its slender, subtly asymmetrical massing evokes the new growth of palm fronds shooting upward from the land—a symbol of new life heralding future growth for the kingdom.' Here, AD covers everything you need to know about the future world-record holder. A rendering of Jeddah Tower shows what the supertall will look like when complete. Photo: Courtesy of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. Jeddah Tower will be located in the city from which it gets its name, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A port area, the city borders the Red Sea and is the second-most populated in the Middle Eastern country. When complete, the skyscraper will join other architectural marvels in Jeddah, such as the Penang Floating Mosque and Al Balad, the town's historic center featuring homes from coral. The design is based on palm fronds, seen here. The building is designed in a neo-futuristic style, an avant-garde aesthetic often underpinned by the use of world-class technology and a rethinking of both the form and function of developments. Renderings show a singular, slender tower, which subtly tapers towards its apex. As Smith and Gill explain, the shape is inspired by new palm fronds, which are abundant in Saudi Arabia. Though the design is meant to honor its Saudi Arabian origins, it also represent the pinnacle of supertall design and the technological evolution that has allowed such monumental design to become a reality. 'The geometry of the tower, starting at the base as a single tripod form then gradually separating at the spire, is tied to the wind performance characteristics of the tower—an analogy of new growth fused with technology,' the pair add. Jeddah Tower's construction started back in 2013 but was paused in 2018. Its contractor, the Binladin Group, was taken off the project following the the 2017–2019 Saudi Arabian purge when its president, Bakr bin Laden, half-brother to Osama bin Laden, was arrested. The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in further delays; though in September 2023 Dezeen reported that construction had restarted. Jeddah Tower, formerly known as Kingdom Tower, under construction in 2018. 'Jeddah Tower construction has restarted…the tower is expected to be completed within four to five years,' the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), the developer, confirms in a statement to AD . Before it was halted, builders had finished about a third of the building. As of January 2025, 60 floors of the total 157 floors have been built, totaling over 40% of the final build. When completed, the tower will stand at around 3,281 feet, or one kilometer. It will be about 564 feet taller than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, designed by Smith while he was working at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which currently holds the record for the world's tallest skyscraper. See the 15 Tallest Buildings in the World Reaching high into the sky, these marvels of engineering and design will fascinate more than just the architecture lover The Kingdom Tower of Jeddah Economic City, no less grand than its nickname suggests, has not yet claimed its title of the world's tallest building due to a number of financial and political setbacks. The 2017 Saudi Arabian anticorruption purge resulted in key backers of the project, including the Saudi Binladin Group's chair Bakr bin Laden, being detained. As the original main contractor, responsible for 33% ownership of the supertall tower, the reputational issues of the Saudi Binladin Group spurred contract restructuring and re-tenders. Additionally, the pandemic further disrupted supply chains and labor, slowing overall progress of the construction of the Jeddah Tower. Similar to the Burj Khalifa, Jeddah Tower is expected to be a mixed-use building, offering both residential, commercial, and office space. There will also be an observation deck (currently planned to be the world's tallest), a Four Seasons hotel, and a 98-foot-diameter outdoor balcony, which was originally designed as a helipad. In the aftermath of delays and financial troubles, the record-breaking tower is now expected to be completed around 2028, based on recent plans. As of June of 2025, 70 floors have been completed. While reaching these new heights is certainly daunting, the structural challenges are a comparatively lesser concern: Construction Week spoke to Bob Sinn, principal engineer at Thornton Tomasetti (the structural engineering firm for Jeddah Tower), who explained that '[at] extreme heights, the main challenges are along practical and architectural lines, not material or structural.'Also read: ZATCA Foils Attempt To Smuggle 310,000 Captagon Pills Through Jeddah Port Source Architectural Digest

The World's Most Critical Oil Chokepoints

The total volume of oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz stands around a staggering $600 billion. While a blockade of the strait is considered a distant possibility, its closure could ripple across global supply chain networks. In particular, Japan, China, and India would be impacted the most. Furthermore, a shock to oil prices would likely affecting production costs, in turn raising the price of consumer goods. This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Dorothy Neufeld, shows the most vital oil transit chokepoints, based on data from MUFG. Below, we show how the Strait of Hormuz sees the second-highest volume of oil passing through its corridor globally: In 2023, 20.9 million barrels of oil flowed through the Strait of Hormuz, which lies between Iran and Oman. Iran largely controls this waterway, where 20% of global oil consumption is transported across this shipping route. In response to Israel-Iran conflicts, oil production surged by 950,000 barrels per day in June—largely driven by Saudi Arabian output. While tensions have recently flared between Israel and Syria, it remains to be seen if conflict will resurface with Iran. Earlier in July, Israeli officials met with Trump to discuss certain scenarios that would justify a future attack on Iran—including the resumption of nuclear enrichment activities. Cristiano's Kingdom

TDT | Manama Ronaldo Signs Football's Most Powerful Deal Announced last week, Cristiano Ronaldo's new contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr is a record-breaking feat never seen before in the sport. The two-year extension delivers staggering numbers and unprecedented influence for a player reshaping the business of football. The headline figure: €185 million a year (BD75.3 million) or around €15 million monthly (BD6.1 million), €3.8 million weekly (BD1.55 million), and €550,000 per day (BD224,000). It confirms Ronaldo once again as the world's highest-paid footballer. But the deal extends far beyond salary. Ownership and Influence Ronaldo's contract includes a minority ownership stake in Al Nassr, reportedly worth €38 million (BD15.5 million). This long-term equity ties him directly to the club's future and solidifies his role off the pitch. He will also have input on player recruitment, which is an almost unheard-of level of authority for an active player. Farwell Hints to Future Plans Speculation flared after Ronaldo posted 'This chapter is over. The story? Still being written' following Al Nassr's final league game. Some saw it as a farewell, with reports linking him to Club World Cup suitors. Instead, he's doubled down, remaining at the club while stepping deeper into its core footballing decisions. The Long Game Ronaldo has scored 93 goals in 105 matches since joining, but a major trophy has eluded him. This contract is built to change that, with massive performance bonuses: He'll also earn €93,000 (BD37,800) per goal and €46,000 (BD18,700) per assist—both rising 20% in the contract's second year. At 39, Ronaldo still sets his sights high. While the 1,000-goal milestone may remain out of reach, his numbers and ambition remain elite. Saudi Football's Statement Ronaldo's extended presence signals a continued push for global relevance in Saudi football. For Al Nassr, his commercial magnetism and influence in sporting decisions elevate their standing on and off the field. As he said at the Globe Soccer Awards: 'Maybe the owner of the club. If I will be the owner, I will make things clear.' That moment feels less hypothetical now.
