Joe Brolly responds after Jack O'Connor's fury over David Clifford comments

Joe Brolly was in Jack O'Connor's firing line after Kerry's hugely impressive All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Armagh.
The Kingdom ran out winners by 0-32 to 1-21 against the reigning All-Ireland champions after a dominant second-half performance at Croke Park. They will now face Tyrone in the last four of the Championship.
After Sunday's game, O'Connor hit out at critics of his side, accusing ex-Kerry players turned pundits of 'lacking loyalty to the team.
The Kingdom manager also referenced Brolly's Sunday Independent column from the morning of the game, which had the headline: 'Joe Brolly: David Clifford is the only Kerry footballer worthy of the name'.
'One of the great motivators in life is trying to prove people wrong. We were being portrayed as a one man team," said O'Connor.
'I saw somebody writing this morning that the only Kerry player worthy of being called a Kerry player was David Clifford. David is a great player but David would tell you that there was a fair support cast out there today."
Brolly responded to O'Connor's comments on his Free State Podcast, saying: "That was the headline put on the piece. But it was about that requirement for perfection in Kerry and how they look at everything through the prism of the greatest team of all - Spillane, Sheehy, Egan etc.
"And that's why I started the piece with the definition of a Kerry inferiority complex. A man with two All-Irelands.
"I rang my good friend Marc Ó Sé and I texted him. I said, look, will you beat Armagh. He said, 'not a hope Joe'."
However, Brolly stated that he actually backed Kerry to beat Armagh before clarifying his comments on Clifford.
He explained: "Clifford is going to, if he hasn't already, break all scoring records now. And I don't care what anybody says.
"It's not fanciful to say that the difference between Kerry and the other teams, essentially, is that Kerry have got David Clifford. What do you do with him?"
The former Sunday Game pundit added: "Nobody's suggesting, for example, that David Clifford should turn out on his own. It's a very, very skilled team. The Kerry team has, see what I wrote, excellent skills and excellent pedigree. They're a skilled team with excellent pedigree."
Brolly also credited Jim Gavin for "releasing the game" through the new rules introduced this year.
"The weekend for me, more than anything, exemplified the extraordinary achievement of Jim Gavin in releasing the game," stated Brolly. "I'm sure there must have been times that David Clifford thought to himself, like, 'Jesus, am I just going to have to wade through this sort of double, triple marking for the rest of my career? Boy, do I wish I was born during the Kerry-Golden Era'."
Brolly believes if Kerry play like they did for their awesome spell in the second half of the Armagh game for the rest of the Championship, they will be lifting the Sam Maguire later this month.
"It was an electrifying and satisfying second half from Kerry," said the All-Ireland winner. "You couldn't but be delighted watching it.
"They had a virtually perfect spell of football for ten minutes. I mean, virtually perfect. And everyone was in the mood all of a sudden. Their tackling was pristine without fouling.
"Their fetching in the middle of the field. For that ten minutes, they were sensational. And then, whenever you're dominating midfield, and you're getting the ball to David Clifford quickly, hello, goodbye. It's like the Roadrunner.
"And that for Kerry poses the question now, that ten-minute spell which will be in their psyche now, is that who they are? Is that what this team is? Because if it is, they'll be the All-Ireland Champions."

Manley names unchanged side for All-Ireland senior camogie final against Galway

Cork have named an unchanged team to take on Galway in Sunday's All-Ireland senior camogie final. Ger Manley is sticking with the same 15 that overcame Waterford by 10 points in the semi-final. This means Katrina Mackey retains her position instead of Clodagh Finn, who was unable to start against the Déise due to a knee injury. Finn has recovered to take her place on the bench. The manager has also opted to keep Orlaith Mullins in reserve after the Sarsfields' attacker scored 1-2 upon her introduction in the penultimate round three minutes from the end of regulation. CORK: A Lee; P Mackey, L Coppinger, M Cahalane (Capt); A Healy, L Treacy, L Hayes; H Looney, A Thompson; E Murphy, O Cahalane, S McCarthy; K Mackey, S McCartan, A O'Connor. Subs: C O'Leary, M Murphy, A O'Neill, N O'Leary, K Wall, R Harty, C Finn, M Condon, C Healy, O Mullins, C O'Sullivan, A Fitzgerald, M Ring, M de Búrca, C Kingston. Besiktas show their class against St Pat's as they run out 4-1 winners

You couldn't say Stephen Kenny saw it coming, but he certainly warned against it. During his pre-match press conference the St Pat's boss left his players in no doubt what would happen if they weren't switched on. 'You can lose it in the first 10 mins if you're not psychologically tuned in,' Kenny cautioned, and how right he was because his team only got going when it was far too late. By that 10th minute, it was only 1-0 to Besiktas, who had opened their account two minutes earlier. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were merely warming up. Besiktas looked capable of scoring with every attack and pretty much did, with former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham running riot and racing to a half-time hat-trick. In that time, the Turkish giants clobbered the Saints, who hadn't conceded a single goal in their last four European home games, stretching back to last season. This time last summer, St Pat's held another Turkish side, İstanbul Başakşehir, to a scoreless draw in Tallaght and that was a yardstick for their ambition here. Solskjaer even referenced that game ahead of this match, mindful that Kenny's men had it in them to at least trouble higher quality opposition. But while the Manchester United legend had bigged St Pat's up in the build-up - and Mason Melia in particular - they never got out of the stalls in that opening half. They weren't allowed to as Besikitas suffocated them with their speed of thought and lightning quick attacks. Solskjaer arrived here under considerable pressure after Besiktas crashed out of the Europa League following a comprehensive 6-2 drubbing by Shakhtar Donetsk. Anything but a win in Tallaght would have cost him his job but that was never in doubt, even if Simon Power's early second-half goal lifted Saints spirits somewhat. Besiktas scored early and often with Joao Mario starting the onslaught - with the aid of a Joe Redmond deflection - after eight minutes. Compatriot Rafa Silva teed him up with a back heel, as the Portuguese pair haunted Kenny again having played against his Ireland team in 'the Ronaldo game' in 2021. Besiktas then doubled that lead six minutes later when Abraham - on loan from Evan Ferguson's new club Roma - stabbed home at close range. Beşiktaş' Tammy Abraham scores the second goal of the game (Image: ©INPHO/Ryan Byrne) Jonas Svensson whipped in a cross from the right that Saints goalkeeper Joseph Anang got a hand to, but it was a weak parry and straight to Abraham's feet. And the ex-Chelsea man then doubled his own haul nine minutes later, outmuscling centre-back Tom Grivosti before dinking a smart finish over Anang. The pressure was just relentless and Grivosti cleared off the line to deny Mario his second, before Besiktas closed out the half with a fourth goal, from the penalty spot. Jamie Lennon caught Abraham in the box with a trailing leg and after a VAR check, Abraham stepped up to send Anang the wrong way for his hat-trick. St Pat's record home defeat in Europe is a pair of 5-0 defeats to Zimbru and Legia Warsaw and at that halfway stage, it looked like this game would surpass it. But credit the Saints who put up a solid fight after the break to win the half, with Kenny replacing Grivosti and Jake Mulraney at half-time with Luke Turner and Axel Sjoberg. Power was full of zest on the left and carried a goal threat. He duly scored three minutes after the restart after coolly slotting Jay McClelland's precision pass home. And minutes later, Melia ought to have turned home Sjoberg's squared ball at close range but couldn't get a clean shot away and goalkeeper Mert Gunok gathered. St Pat's were energised and went on the attack again with 15 minutes to play. Off a quick free, Chris Forrester peppered Gunock with a shot that had to be saved. There's a second-leg to come in Istanbul of course, but St Pat's are resigned to their fate and know that Sunday's league clash with Sligo Rovers carries far more weight. Sitting in sixth position, the Saints are six points off third and the European prize it offers. The FAI Cup also provides an avenue into Europe. After their European exploits last year, St Pat's surged up the table by winning their last nine league games in a row to enjoy nights like these. They need to get their skates on to savour them again. ST PAT'S: Anang 5; McLaughlin 6, Redmond 6, Grivosti 5 (Turner 45, 6), McClelland 6; Forrester 6 (Baggley 82, 5), Lennon 6; Mulraney 5 (Sjoberg 45, 6), Leavy 6 (Carty 82, 5), Power 7; Melia 6 (Kavanagh 88, 5). BESIKTAS: Mert-Gunok 6; Svensson 6 (Bingol 45, 6), Paulista 7, Topcu 7, Jurasek 6 (Sanuc 90, 5); Tıknaz 6 (Yilmaz 76, 5), Kokcu 7 (Hadziahmetovic 90, 5); Muci 5 (Arroyo 59, 6), Silva 8, Mario 7; Abraham 8.
