Animation inspired by mother's poem to her daughters ready for Galway premiere

A filmmaker mother-of-three from Co Fermanagh is to have her book-turned-animation premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh next month.
Ciara Tinney, 39, a former assistant director on hit fantasy drama Game Of Thrones, said it does not feel real that the film Wildkind will be shown at the festival.
The mother-of-three began writing her poem Wildkind after giving birth to her first daughter Adabelle, 11, and began to illustrate it when her daughters Fiadh Ros, eight, and Birdie Blue, six, were born.
The book is an ode to the landscape and nature of her homeland.
'Motherhood naturally became a really creative time, because you just had these huge thoughts,' she told the PA news agency.
'So I just started to write them.
'The book is a poem written for my daughters, and it is, very basically, just a story of how I want them to live, and how I want to live with them, focusing on being kind and staying connected to the wild.
'Kids today are being labelled as digital natives.
'The idea that they're spending half of their time in a digital landscape is just crazy, especially for someone who grew up in Fermanagh and used to just run about the fields.'
Tinney self-published Wilkdkind and sold around 300 copies, before embarking on transforming the book into an animation, voiced by her mother.
She added: 'A lot of the kids books and things that were around when Ada was tiny, it's very rainbow coloured and very high stimulation artwork and crazy animals, like tigers.
'But we just didn't have that here. So I kind of thought it'd be lovely to have a more realistic and view on what our wild is.
'It's not going to be a rainforest jungle, but there's still so much to explore here in Ireland.
'It's just this little grounding, the fluid wilderness, and the watercolour imagery, it's supposed to feel like it's slowing you down.'
She said the black-and-white theme of the book was about simplicity, but also about connection.
Tinney is hoping that the film, which is available in English, Irish and Arabic, will resonate with a wide audience.
'The overall idea that I really wanted to come across in the book was of 'one land and one sea', and it's here for sharing, a kind of a universal landscape that could be shared by everybody.
'There was a gorgeous conversation I had with some of the people who did the voiceover in Arabic.
'We were looking at the book one day, and I said 'Does anywhere here make you think of home?'
'Two of the mums, Rasha and Arwa who are from Sudan, started telling the story about the River Nile.
'The idea of the river was making them think of the River Nile, and being under this mountain where the river flows by and there's a woman selling fish freshly caught out of the river.
'And it was just amazing, it's just a class little moment to think, if that can make them feel at home with this imagery, then I feel a real sense of accomplishment in that.'
The film will be shown as part of the Galway Film Fleadh on Sunday July 13 at 12:30pm in Town Hall Theatre.
'I'm just so proud of the film, getting to work with the Arabic speaking families in that way was just amazing, because that's a whole part of the story.
'It's about integration too, and it's about art for all and everybody being able to be a part of this artistic piece of work and that exploration of mother tongue.
'The overall story of the book I always say is a call to come home, it's a mother's call to come home, to come home to Mother Earth.
'I just think it's a nice message, especially in today's world.'

Strictly's Vicky Pattison proves feud with Sam Thompson is over as she poses with star after finally unblocking him

Vicky's years-long feud with fellow reality TV alum Sam Thompson is no secret. But they've also clashed a number of times in the past. It all kicked off in 2017 when Geordie Shore legend Vicky criticised Sam's sister, Louise Thompson, over her working out on holiday. Made In Chelsea star Sam then hit back in a video of his own, saying only he was allowed to mock his sister. The war of words quickly escalated and Vicky responded by blocking Sam on social media – a block that would last for five years. But clearly putting that feud behind them, the pair now looked in great spirits as they posed for a photo together. Vicky took to social media to share a carousel of images with people she's 'grateful' for. The reality star penned to her millions of followers: 'There's been a lot to smile about recently... but mostly, it's the people in my life I feel grateful for you 🥹🩷 'Tag the people you're grateful for in my comments... and let them know what they mean to you.' Strictly Come Dancing 2025 lineup IN FULL - including Game of Thrones star & famous YouTuber Vicky looked in great spirits as she posed with Strictly's Luba in the first photo, during a glam night out. Then, in another shot, she could be seen standing with Sam, as he put his arm around her and gazed in her direction. The telly stars looked delighted to be in each other's company. Things got frosty between the pals in the past when Sam appeared on Celebrity Big Brother. Viewers saw him get upset after he was warned in the Diary Room for flicking fellow housemate Jemma Lucy's nipple. Vicky, appearing on Big Brother's Bit on the Side, pulled no punches. Speaking about the incident to Rylan, she slammed his behaviour and said: 'I think there are two ways to look at this. "One, he got upset because he knew it was a joke, Jemma knew it was a joke and he didn't mean any offence by it. "Secondly, because he's an entitled little rat who is used to always getting what he wants.' The 'rat' remark ensured the feud had well and truly taken root. Despite having a mutual friend in Towie's Pete Wicks – who is Vicky's best mate and later became one of Sam's closest pals – the two reality stars stayed firmly out of each other's way. Vicky only lifted the block on Sam in 2022 after they unexpectedly bumped into each other at a Harry Potter premiere. But while both became close friends with Pete, they were rarely in the same room at the same time.

Care home residents wear Virtual Reality goggles for 'magical journey'

A North Wales composer whose music has been used to promote blockbuster TV series like Game of Thrones has taken care home residents on a 'magical journey'. The faces of residents of Pendine Park's Bryn Seiont Newydd care home, lit up after they put on virtual reality goggles to experience the wild and wonderful sounds of a beautiful woodland while sitting in their armchairs. The immersive experience is the brainchild of award-winning composer and arranger Owain Llwyd, originally from Glyndyfrdwy, near Llangollen. His work has also been featured on other TV shows like X-Factor, Top Gear and Countryfile. Owain's original music was used in a trailer for the hit TV series Game of Thrones while another of his tracks popped up in a trailer promoting the Will Smith movie, Men in Black. Join the North Wales Live Whatsapp community now Kathleen Taylor, a resident at Pendine Park's Bryn Seiont Newydd care home in Caernarfon, said: 'It was fantastic. It was just as if I was there in the woods, listening to the birds and watching the deer, marvellous and uplifting.' Kathleen and the other residents were among the first ever to experience the new Wild Sounds of Wales project devised by Owain and a team of experts. Other members include wildlife TV producer and director Jacinth Latta, wildlife sound recordist and spatial audio designer Axel Drioli, of Sounding Wild, and virtual reality artist Domonic White, of Nature's Racers. The collaboration is piloting the first of what they hope will become a successful series of experiences where sight, sound and music converge to replicate unforgettable journeys through nature. They chose Dinefwr Park, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Wales, for the pilot project but Owain says their ambition is to develop similar virtual reality journeys through beautiful landscapes across Wales. Owain, who studied music at University, has worked extensively with Welsh National Opera orchestra and his concert compositions have been performed by renowned artists ranging from harpist Catrin Finch to the Black Dyke Brass Band. He first came to prominence on winning all five Composer's Medals in both the Urdd National Eisteddfod and the National Eisteddfod of Wales between 2002 and 2005 – the only composer to ever have achieved this accolade. Owain, who now lives in the Cardiff area, said he has always been strongly inspired by the natural environment and wildlife. He said: 'I feel strongly that we must all work together to help reverse the man-made climate crisis which the world is now facing. 'The Wild Sounds of Wales project began because I wanted to do something innovative to reflect the importance of nature in our lives. 'I realised that virtual reality could be combined with music to transport audiences into the very environment which inspired it. "The project was developed around a unique collaboration with the WNO Orchestra, whose performance of the score is central to the experience. 'Axel and I set out to create a sonic experience where nature and orchestra would exist in perfect balance. The musical score draws inspiration from the calls of birds and other native Welsh wildlife, while the soundscape in turn responded to and was shaped by the music." Owain was excited about composing a musical score based on the sounds of birds, insects and other native wildlife of Wales, then overlaying the actual sounds of these animals onto that. The idea evolved to include the creation of a 360 degree film made so people would be able to see that environment while listening to the music. Support, including some funding for the project, was secured from a number of organisations including the Arts Council of Wales, PRS Foundation, National Trust Cymru, Cadw, The National Landscapes Association, and Arts and Business Cymru. Other key partners include Disability Arts Cymru, Tŷ Cerdd, Wales Millennium Centre, VERE Experiences, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Am, Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales, Eryri National Park Authority, Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, the National Eisteddfod, Tŷ Pawb and Pendine Park organisation. Pendine Park owners, Mario and Gill Kreft, have long advocated the benefits of using arts and music as therapeutic tools in a health and social care setting. They were the first care home group in Wales to commission a full time artist in residence, Sarah Edwards, and musician in residence, Nia Davies Williams. Nia said: 'For those with mobility issues or in need of long-term care, who cannot easily get out into the landscapes that they love, this is a wonderful way of bringing the sights and sounds of those landscapes directly to them."
