I'm not bothered by Elton John calling me a moron, says Peter Kyle

Times4 hours ago

When Sir Elton John called Peter Kyle a 'bit of a moron' on national television, it marked the nadir of relations between the technology secretary and creative sector.
The two sides had been battling it out over the government's proposals to change copyright law.
For Kyle, who has acute dyslexia, it was not the first time the epithet had been thrown at him. 'The first person I ever recall calling me that word 'moron' was a teacher, and that was in front of schoolkids. So I wouldn't say it hurt, but it was very humiliating,' the science, innovation and technology secretary said in an interview with The Times.
Of John's insult, made on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he said: 'My brother thought it was the funniest thing he'd ever heard. My nieces thought it was the best thing they'd ever heard, because the thought of Elton John even talking about a family member … But with me, I wasn't upset or hurt or irritated by it.

Simone Ashley steals the spotlight in dramatic gold dress for F1: The Movie premiere despite her scenes being cut from Brad Pitt film

Simone Ashley turned out for the European premiere of F1: The Movie on Monday night, despite being cut from the Brad Pitt-fronted film. The British actress, 30, known for her roles in Bridgerton and Sex Education, was dropped from the final version of the movie. Despite the career blow, Simone oozed class as she walked the red carpet in Leicester Square in London. Turning heads in a metallic-like gold ensemble, the star wore a structured silhouette dress with a high neckline and a dramatic peplum at the waist. Simone completed her look with a pair of gold-coloured stilettos and large hoop earrings. F1's director Joseph Kosinski previously defended axing Simone's lines from the movie in a interview and explained the actress will still appear on screen, though she does not have any lines. He told People: 'It happens on every film, where you have to shoot more than you can use. There were two or three storylines that ultimately didn't make into the final cut, 'But Simone, she's an incredible talent, incredible actress, incredible singer, and I would love to work with her again.' F1, set to be released on June 27, has been in the works for years with Brad Pitt, 60, as the lead star. His character pitted against rookie and rival Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) as they battle it out at various Grand Prix's around the world. While the reviews for F1: The Movie aren't quite all in yet, social media reactions from several critics began flooding in on X this week. Many praised Brad and Damson's onscreen chemistry, as well the movie's overall look thanks to director Joseph Kosinski, who last worked on Top Gun: Maverick. With some even branding F1 the 'Top Gun for racing fans' - three years after the Tom Cruise aviator movie made an eye-popping $1.496 billion worldwide. Tom, 61, turned out for the European premiere in London as he joined Brad on the red carpet as the movie hunks looked happy to see each other, greeting one another with a hug. Mission Impossible star Tom donned a sleek, modern two-piece suit in a charcoal gray color. The suit featured a tailored fit with a single-breasted jacket. Showing off his buzzcut, Brad was also joined by his girlfriend Ines de Ramon as the couple walked the carpet together. Wearing sunglasses, Brad opened the first buttons of his crisp white shirt to reveal a satin scarf around his neck. Ines stunned in a gorgeous floor-length, halter-neck dress that featured silver sequins and sparkling details throughout, creating a shimmering effect. Commenting on F1: The Movie, iOne Digital's Bernard Smalls said: 'Buckle up #F1TheMovie is an high octane thrill ride. It's one of those films that you go to the movies for. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris are both dynamic. This is top gun for F1 racing fans. Truly a racing movie for a new generation'. While Rotten Tomatoes' Erik David wrote: 'Joseph Kosinski's #F1TheMovie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch'.

EastEnders' Michelle Collins suffers blunder as Alex Jones steps in

EastEnders legend Michelle Collins appeared on the BBC programme to discuss her new career move away from the BBC soap The One Show's Alex Jones was forced to step in after a guest made an embarrassing mistake just moments into their conversation. During Monday's (June 23) episode, Alex was joined by co-host Roman Kemp on the iconic sofa, where they interviewed various guests, including EastEnders legend Michelle Collins, who discussed her latest project ahead of her temporary departure from the BBC soap. ‌ Michelle, 63, will make her Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut with a one-woman dark comedy called Motorhome Marilyn, written by Ben Weatherill and inspired by her own encounter with Motorhome Marilyn. The play follows Denise, a struggling actress fixated on Marilyn Monroe, as she pursues her Hollywood dreams in the 1980s. ‌ When Denise's aspirations are unfulfilled, she confronts the harsh realities. As Alex and Roman inquired about Michelle's new role, the conversation quickly took an awkward turn when the actress made an unexpected blunder. The conversation kicked off with Roman asking: "Obviously doing a one woman show and doing the whole thing playing the character, is your home becoming a bit of a shrine to Marilyn Monroe?" Michelle opened up about her intense Marilyn Monroe obsession, confessing: "Oh yes. My husband is like 'Michelle this is getting really silly now, it's getting unhealthy.' Everything down to my coffee cup is Marilyn. I mean everything. It's amazing how much stuff you can get and the collections out there are unreal." Delving deeper into her life, Michelle expressed: "It's tough and I do kind of think 'why did I do this' because I'm filming at the same time and I'm rehearsing at the weekend.", reports Wales Online. ‌ The conversation took a humorous turn when American actor Sean Hayes inquired: "So when does it start?" Michelle hesitated before saying: "Umm 29th of July?". There was a light-hearted moment when Alex had to correct Michelle's mistake regarding dates as she comically interjected with a smile to the camera: "No. It's the 30th". Laughter ensued as Michelle thanked her with a chuckle: "The 30th, thank you Alex. Don't come on the 29th." ‌ Famed for her role as Cindy Beale in the beloved BBC soap EastEnders, Michelle made headlines after her dramatic return to the show in 2023, a notable 25 years since her departure when her character supposedly died in childbirth in 1998. The plot twist that Cindy had been secretly living in Spain under witness protection shocked fans, and since her comeback to Walford, she's been stirring up a storm – most notably with her affair with Junior Knight coming out in the open during the Christmas period. Since then, she's been assaulted by Kathy Beale, shot her husband Ian, and inadvertently started the fire at the Queen Vic, resulting in Martin Fowler's death. The actress is now preparing to exit the show once more as she embarks on a new stage role.
