Patrick Mahomes focuses on taking care of his body as he closes in on age 30
Mahomes says that as he looks to continue playing at a high level going forward, he knows he needs to take good care of his body, and that only gets more important the older he gets.
'More than anything I have a better understanding of my body,'' Mahomes told Adam Teicher of ESPN. 'I know the extra amount of recovery stuff I need to do, how to feel my best on a day-to-day basis. Obviously I probably bounced back a little bit quicker when I was younger but at the same time, I have a better plan and a better standard that I hold myself to on a day-to-day basis so I can be ready for every single practice.'
With two regular-season MVP awards and three Super Bowl MVP awards, Mahomes may have accomplished more in his career before age 30 than any quarterback in NFL history. But if he wants to be remembered as the greatest of all time, he'll need to play at a high level well into his 30s. He's doing what he needs to do to get there.

Detroit Lions DL Levi Onwuzurike out for season with ACL surgery, coach says; Decker, Paschal injured
Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike will miss the 2025 season after having knee surgery, a setback for a franchise that was counting on him to fill in for Alim McNeill. Lions head coach Dan Campbell made the announcement on Sunday morning, just before his team had the NFL's first training camp practice of the year. "Levi's surgery ... it was significant, but it needed to be done." Campbell said. "Out of his control, and it needed to be done." The 27-year-old Onwuzurike started in a career-high 11 games last season, including Detroit's loss to Washington in the divisional round. His playing time increased when McNeill had a season-ending knee injury in December. McNeill, who signed a $97 million, four-year contract extension last October, is out indefinitely. Onwuzurike's injury gives rookie defensive tackle Tyleik Williams a chance to play a significant role when the two-time defending NFC North champions kick off the season Sept. 7 at Green Bay. Detroit drafted the former Ohio State standout with the 28th pick overall in the 2025 NFL draft. Williams accumulated 136 tackles, 27 tackles for losses totaling 97 yards, 11.5 quarterback sacks, 10 pass break-ups and four quarterback hurries during his tenure with the Buckeyes. The Lions will also lean on 31-year-old defensive tackle DJ Reader and newly acquired veteran Roy Lopez, who started 16 games last season for Arizona and has 50 career starts with the Cardinals and Houston Texans. Lions offensive tackle Taylor Decker underwent surgery during the offseason, according to Campbell. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list on Thursday. Campbell said "there's a good chance" he will be back after the Hall of Fame game. "He's good," Campbell said. "He cleaned out the shoulder a little bit, and we're going to work him back in when he's ready to go, get the strength back, but he's in a good place." He added that defensive lineman Josh Paschal underwent knee surgery in the offseason, and will "probably be back" with the team in early September. However, he thinks that the NFL should take a look at how last season played out and consider changes to their current playoff format. "With the season that we had last year, to go and play away, it definitely was a little different. It definitely needs to go into consideration and something that we need to figure out because having 14 wins... normally doesn't go to play away in the playoffs," Jefferson said. "We definitely had the opportunity to play home field with the last game in Detroit, but even losing that, we still felt like we should've had home-field advantage. But even not having home-field advantage is never an excuse. It's something we had to deal with and we wish we would've had home field but it is what it is." Jefferson makes some good points. Entering the playoffs last season, the Vikings had a 14-3 record while the Los Angeles Rams were 10-7. Minnesota should have had home field advantage. There are a lot of questions about whether or not the second-year quarterback can keep the Vikings as a top contender in the NFC. Thankfully, Jefferson is still locked in with Minnesota and he will be a huge part of deciding what kind of season the Vikings end up having.
