New milestone for Sibu with opening of first Petros Multifuel Station
SIBU (June 20): Sibu's first Petros Multifuel Station was launched at Brooke Drive today.
Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang officiated at the station run by Emparia Sdn Bhd.
'As many of you know, we are on a journey to make Sarawak a developed state by year 2030. That's not just a slogan, it's a real vision. And to make that happen, we need strong support from small and medium enterprises (SMEs),' he said.
'SMEs are the heart of our economy. You create jobs, keep the local economy moving, and help bring development to every corner of Sarawak including places like Sibu, Kapit, and Mukah, not just big cities like Kuching and Miri.'
Delving on Petros, the Pelawan assemblyman said the new station is part of a bigger story about how Sarawak is starting to stand tall, taking charge of the state's own oil and gas resources.
'Petros, as many of you know, was set up not just to do business, but to protect our Sarawak rights. Sarawak has always had special powers under the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
'And we are using those powers wisely for the interests and benefit of all Anak Sarawak. Thanks to the leadership of our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sarawak government, Sarawak now has stronger control over our oil and gas industry. That means we can decide what's best for us, make sure more value stays in the state, and more importantly – give more opportunities to our own people,' added Tiang.
He said this autonomy is what allows Sarawak to build better schools and offer free tertiary education to Sarawakians next year as well as improve healthcare and infrastructure.

Emparia Sdn Bhd chief executive officer David Tiang said Petros is not just a growing international brand but a Sarawak brand created to serve Sarawakians.
'As we officially launch the Petros Multifuel Station today, we hope that when you see the Petros sign, you feel a sense of pride – knowing that this is our Sarawak brand – and you will support our business and grow this brand together,' he said. SUPP man hits back at Chong, defends new Sarawak airport as long-term investment
Kua says expanding Kuching International Airport is unsustainable due to its landlocked location. KUCHING (Aug 20): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Engkilili chairman (SUPP) Kua Jack Seng has hit back at Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, saying his opposition to the proposed new airport project is politically motivated and ignores Sarawak's long-term development needs. The Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier said expanding Kuching International Airport (KIA) is unsustainable due to its landlocked location. 'Even with an investment of RM100 million, it would only serve as a stop-gap measure for about 10 years. After that, Sarawak would still need a new airport. 'Should Sarawak keep 'patching up' indefinitely, or should we plan boldly for the next 30 to 50 years?' he said in a statement today. Kua argued that the project is not just about capacity but about positioning Sarawak as a regional aviation hub and international gateway. 'How can Sarawak attract more global flights, develop as a Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) hub, or draw multinational investments if we continue operating from a constrained airport?' he said. Chong in a statement earlier had said that the RM10 billion airport is a misplaced priority that does not align with the actual needs of the people. He said said the massive expenditure would be better used to uplift the 'world-class living standard' of Sarawakians, rather than investing in a 'world-class' building that showcases state wealth. Chong questioned the necessity of building a new airport, pointing out that the current KIA is significantly underutilised. With that, Kua defended the state's fiscal capacity to fund the project, dismissing Chong's comparisons to federal overspending in the Mahathir era. 'Equating our prudent financial management to federal overspending decades ago is an insult to Sarawak's sound fiscal discipline,' he said. Kua further said Sarawak should not accept 'crumbs' in federal funding while other states receive billions in infrastructure investment. 'The new airport is not just about size; it is the runway for Sarawak's aviation independence and international connectivity,' he said. Kua said Chong's position reflects a 'federal-centric mindset' that discourages Sarawak from dreaming big, adding that the new airport is not wasteful spending, but an investment in Sarawak's future. 'It is a foundation for the next 30 to 50 years, positioning Sarawak as an international gateway and a key aviation hub in the region. 'SUPP firmly believes Sarawakians deserve more than just a token expansion. They deserve infrastructure that matches their resources, potential, and rightful place in Malaysia,' he said. Chong slams Sarawak govt's new RM10 bln airport plan as wasteful
Chong says the massive expenditure would be better used to uplift the 'world-class living standard' of Sarawakians, rather than investing in a 'world-class' building that showcases state wealth. KUCHING (Aug 20): The Sarawak government's proposal to construct a new airport – estimated to cost over RM10 billion – is a misplaced priority that does not align with the actual needs of the people, said Democratic Action Party Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen. The Stampin MP and Padungan assemblyman said the massive expenditure would be better used to uplift the 'world-class living standard' of Sarawakians, rather than investing in a 'world-class' building that showcases state wealth. 'When many of our fellow Sarawakians are still living from hand to mouth, and businesses are struggling to survive, it is a misplaced priority on the part of the state government,' said Chong in a statement today. Chong questioned the necessity of building a new airport, pointing out that the current Kuching International Airport (KIA) is significantly underutilised. He highlighted that the KIA runway, measuring 3,780 metres, nearly as long as Kuala Lumpur International Airport's 4,000-metre runway, is already capable of handling large aircraft such as Boeing 747/777 and Airbus A380-800. He added that it has been nearly 20 years since the new KIA runway was completed in 2006, and yet the state government still could not attract enough passenger traffic to warrant regular long-haul international flights. Chong proposed that expanding the existing terminal would be sufficient to accommodate future passenger growth. Instead of grand infrastructure, he urged the state government to prioritise 'real issues' including, repairing broken drains and upgrading infrastructure, installing street lights in housing and commercial areas, providing digitalisation grants to small and microbusinesses, offering bursaries for tertiary students, and supporting healthcare expenses for the underprivileged. 'My advice to the state government – use our wealth for the people, not to flaunt with mega projects,' Chong added. Chong Chieng Jen Kuching International Airport misplaced priority

Agriculture sector contributes over 20pc of Kelantan's GDP, says MB
BACHOK: The agriculture sector remains the second largest contributor to Kelantan's economy as it accounts for over 20 per cent of the state's gross domestic product (GDP), with the services sector leading the way by contributing over 69 per cent. Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud said the agrofood GDP and agricultural output in the state have consistently increased as a result of the constant efforts of various departments and agencies, as well as the contributions of farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen. "Climate change and global temperature shifts, uncertainties and geopolitical crises, as well as wars and import-export restrictions, particularly food-related, have significantly impacted everyone, particularly in terms of the economy and people's survival. "As such, many parties have begun emphasising the importance of sufficient food supplies and resources. In Kelantan, we have long aspired to become the country's food granary and remain proactive by driving various initiatives, programmes and projects focused on food sources, supply and security both for the state and the country,' he said when officiating the launch of the state-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 here on Wednesday (Aug 20). He said the state government continued to focus on the transformation of the agriculture and agrofood sector. He added that although the transformation process takes time to be fully realised, the implementation of high-impact programmes and projects continues in line with changing times. "Through the Kelantan Sejahtera 2033 agenda under the strategic 'Penghayatan Membangun Bersama Islam' plan, the state government is on the right track to managing food security. Collaboration with various stakeholders is also part of the state's approach to achieving this goal, while simultaneously upholding the people's rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,' he said.- Bernama
