Consumption has contributed around 60 percent on average annually to China's economic growth over the past four years and its role as the economy's main engine has continued to strengthen, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao said on Friday.
Retail sales of consumer goods grew 5.5 percent on average annually over the past four years, with sales expected to top 50 trillion yuan in 2025, he said.
China, Wang added, has imported consumer goods worth 7.4 trillion yuan between 2021 and 2024, the first four years of the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).
Furthermore, sales revenue under trade-in programs in China has surpassed 2.9 trillion yuan as of the end of June, boosting consumption.
Foreign direct investment into the mainland, in actual use, has exceeded the target of US$700 billion since the start of the 14th Five-Year Plan period while China's outbound investment maintained an average annual growth rate of over 5 percent during the past four years, making it among the world's top three investors, Wang said.
China's economy, he added, is still facing a "very severe and complex situation", suggesting the government would take action to counter challenges ahead.
Growth came in at 5.2 percent in the second quarter, official data showed on Tuesday, but analysts have warned that more work was needed to avoid a slump in the second half of the year.
"We are still facing a very severe and complex situation. Global changes are unstable and uncertain. Some of our policies will provide some new responses according to the times and circumstances," Wang said.
"Our toolbox is plentiful, and we will be fully prepared."
Asked specifically about China's reliance on exports, Wang suggested the government was preparing policies to "further stimulate the momentum of our consumption development".
"China's economy is improving, and the long-term fundamentals have not changed, the consumption market's characteristics of great potential, strong resilience and vitality have not changed," he said.
"We are also promoting new forms of consumption... for example Pop Mart, these kinds of new trends, new fashions and styles... the Labubu phenomenon has swept the world."

US-bound rare earth magnets on the rise

US-bound rare earth magnets on the rise Rare earth exports from China to the United States have rebounded after US tariffs fuelled trade tensions earlier. File photo: AFP China's exports of rare earth magnets to the United States in June soared to more than seven times their May level, marking a sharp recovery in the flow of critical minerals used in electric vehicles and wind turbines after a Sino-US trade deal. Outbound shipments to the United States from the world's largest producer of rare earth magnets surged to 353 metric tons in June, up 660 percent from May, data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Sunday. That came after pacts reached in June to resolve issues around shipments of rare earth minerals and magnets to the United States. Chipmaker Nvidia plans to resume sales of its H20 AI chips to China as part of the agreement. China, which provides more than 90 percent of the global supply of rare earth magnets, decided in early April to add several rare earth items to its export restriction list in retaliation for US tariffs. The subsequent sharp fall in shipments in April and May, due to the lengthy time required to secure export licences, had upset the global supply chain, forcing some automakers outside China to halt partial production due to a rare earths shortage. In total, China exported 3,188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets globally last month, up 157.5 percent from 1,238 tons in May, although the June volume was still 38.1 percent lower than the corresponding month in 2024. Shipments of magnets are likely to recover further in July as more exporters obtained licences in June, analysts said. During the first half of 2025, exports of rare earth magnets fell 18.9 percent on the year to 22,319 tons. (Reuters)

Trump's ‘week of wins' dented by Epstein storm, health concerns

For US President Donald Trump, whose political career has benefited from voter anxiety over Washington elites, the health of his predecessor and the riches of Wall Street, the past week offered a reversal of fortune. Trump's efforts to escape the uproar over Jeffrey Epstein failed spectacularly, after The Wall Street Journal published a story alleging he once sent a suggestive birthday letter to the disgraced financier – a claim the president denied. The White House was forced to make a rare disclosure that Trump was not in perfect health. And Trump whipsawed on the fate of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, signalling to lawmakers that he would attempt to fire him before relenting after concerns about a market backlash. Now, as Trump gears up for a high-profile trip to the UK next week to finalise a trade deal with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he finds himself looking slightly vulnerable. There was much Trump hoped to harness in what he called a 'week of wins' – passage of his flagship tax-cut package earlier this month, approval of spending cuts this week, a run of favourable economic data, the signing of a stablecoin bill, and implementation of his aggressive tariff agenda. Instead, there were suddenly a few punctures in the armour of a president who at times in his second term has seemed irrepressible as he bent rival institutions and political opponents to his will.

South Africa pushes to increase trade exports to China amid US' 30 per cent tariff hike

Facing a US tariff of 30 per cent from August 1, South Africa is intensifying efforts to significantly grow its exports to China and address a persistent trade imbalance. Advertisement A high-level delegation, led by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, has been on a week-long visit to Beijing, seeking investments and pitching strategic opportunities to diversify the nation's export basket beyond basic commodities towards higher-value products such as pharmaceuticals, automotive goods and green energy technologies In a speech at the South Africa China Investment Forum, held on the sidelines of the third China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) in Beijing earlier this week, Mashatile said South Africa's trade deficit with China had risen from less than US$1 billion (7.2 billion yuan) annually between 1988 and 2000 to US$9.71 billion (69.7 billion yuan) by 2023. 'We need to address challenges such as access to the Chinese market due to factors like tariff and non-tariff barriers, distance and competition from other countries,' he said. South Africa is seeing a growing trade deficit that heavily favours China, and Mashatile explained that tackling these challenges required expanding South Africa's export portfolio, encouraging value-added exports and establishing a more balanced trade relationship.
