IIIT-B student gets record ₹1.45 crore package as institute celebrates silver jubilee convocation
This was announced during the Silver Jubilee Convocation Ceremony held on the IIIT-B campus, where 372 students graduated across various programmes.
The convocation saw 142 students graduate from the iMTech programme, 192 from the MTech programme, 12 from MSc in Digital Society, 10 from MSc by Research, and 16 PhD scholars. Top academic performers were recognised with medals.
According to a release, this year's placement season has been especially noteworthy. 14 students received annual packages exceeding ₹60 lakh, 67 students received offers above ₹40 lakh, and more than 180 students secured packages above ₹20 lakh per annum.
Parallel to the convocation celebrations, the institute highlighted its growing global role in shaping Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
At a press conference, the institute's Director, Prof. Debabrata Das unveiled key initiatives led by the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure (CDPI), a non-profit team working across 60 countries. Among IIIT-B's flagship contributions is MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform), which has issued over 136 million digital IDs in 27 countries and is expected to reach nearly one billion people within three years.
'MOSIP is a homegrown product from India to the world. It reflects IIIT-B's mission to foster ethical, scalable, and inclusive digital tools,' Prof. Das said. The platform has earned international accolades, including the Future of Government award and a 'Champion' recognition at the 2024 World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva.
He further stated that building on MOSIP's success, the institute has launched INJI, a next-generation, privacy-centric data exchange platform, now adopted by four countries. Backed by partners like the Gates Foundation and NORAD, IIIT-B's DPI ecosystem also includes projects like OpenG2P and COSS, aimed at driving policy innovation and societal transformation.
Beyond DPI, IIIT-B's other initiatives include the E-Health Research Centre's collaboration with NIMHANS on the Tele-MANAS mental health programme, the AI for Inclusion (A4I) initiative with Microsoft Philanthropies, and advanced telecom R&D through the COMET Foundation.
In recognition of its sustainability efforts, IIIT-B was awarded the International Green University Award for the third consecutive year. The governing body has also approved ₹817 crore for the construction of a new East Campus over the next seven years, the release said.

CM says Karnataka will take up issue of GST notices to small traders with Centre
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said the State government will take up with the Centre the issue of small traders getting GST notices from the Commercial Taxes Department for transactions through UPI. He also made it clear that the issue would be discussed with the State Commercial Taxes Department before making a decision in this regard. 'The Goods and Sales Tax (GST) Council comes under the purview of the Centre. However, the State government will take up the matter with the Union government and discuss it with the State's Commercial Taxes Department, and take a decision,' Mr. Siddaramaiah told presspersons in Mysuru. It may be noted that a section of the small and micro traders in the State have taken exception to getting notices with respect to taxes based on their transactions via UPI. Meanwhile, asking the small traders not to worry about the GST-related notices, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar accused the Union government of creating trouble for small traders and street vendors by introducing GST. 'Notices are being issued to those who are conducting business of over ₹40 lakh,' he said in Hoskote, near here, where an event was organised to distribute government benefits. He said: 'This is the achievement of the Union government. The traders do not have to worry. We will take necessary actions to protect their interests.' The Deputy Chief Minister said though the State had appealed to the Centre several times seeking funds over the last two years, the BJP MPs are not speaking. 'They are not concerned about the poor in the State.' Accusing the BJP of not doing enough, he said that the Congress government was committed to getting Yettinahole waters to Bengaluru North district before 2027 and the government had decided to prepare a DPR to bring metro to Hoskote. 'We will ensure it is approved during our term.' Mr. Shivakumar also pointed out that the government had taken steps to regularise B-khata properties in Bengaluru, and that over a crore patta khatas are being given to Scheduled Tribes.

IIIT-A develops smart dairy monitoring system
Prayagraj: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad, has developed an advanced video-based smart dairy monitoring system to ensure the health and wellbeing of cattle using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (MI). The system, designed under the leadership of Prof Vrijendra Singh, aims to revolutionise dairy farming by enabling real-time health surveillance of cattle. This cutting-edge system, which includes setting up video cameras at cow shelters, can detect early symptoms of serious cattle diseases like mastitis, lumpy skin disease and ketosis. By closely monitoring the animals' behaviour and physical movements, the system alerts dairy farmers through mobile notifications if it notices any abnormalities or signs of illness. Testing of the system is scheduled to begin shortly at selected cow shelters in the region. A remarkable feature of this system is its video analysis technology that constantly monitors the body language and behavioural patterns of the cattle. It can detect even minor changes in routine, such as lethargy, isolation from the herd, or reduced appetite — often the first signs of illness. It analyses various factors, including cows' walking patterns, feeding behaviour, posture and social interactions. Any deviations from normal are flagged as potential health risks. The innovation was developed by a dedicated team, including three students from Banasthali Vidyapith — Nivedita Sonkar, Paridhi Chauhan and Anushka Srivastava. Sonkar said the team is now working on a smart collar technology, which will integrate sensors powered by the Internet of Things (IoT). These collars will provide comprehensive health data through GPS tracking, accelerometers (for movement analysis), temperature sensors (to detect fever), heart rate monitors and rumination sensors (to monitor digestion). This AI-driven system holds the potential to transform dairy farming by ensuring early disease detection, reducing mortality, and improving overall animal welfare.
