State capture-implicated Bain & Company shuts down SA operations
Bain & Co, which scored a R187 million contract to restructure the South African Revenue Service (SARS) following the appointment of Tom Moyane as commissioner in 2014, was part of the companies implicated in the Zondo Commission in 2022.
According to the Financial Times, Bain confirmed it was winding down its consulting operations in South Africa, saying its Johannesburg office would become a services hub supporting its global operations, while retaining the vast majority of its local employees.
The company has reportedly struggled to re-establish itself as a management consultancy group of integrity. In September 2022, the company was also banned by the National Treasury from doing business with the government for 10 years.
Bain & Company's partner in South Africa, Athol Williams, blew the whistle on the corruption. During his testimony at the Zondo Commission, he suggested that the company, with the help of Moyane, had been embroiled in questionable activity at SARS and even accused Bain & Co of attempting to silence him.
In 2021, Williams had to flee South Africa over fears for his safety after he blew the whistle on companies and individuals involved in state capture and testified before the Zondo Commission.

African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has weighed in on the R60,000 bribery scandal involving the Independent Development Trust (IDT). The IDT's suspended CEO, Tebogo Malaka, and spokesperson Phasha Makgolane allegedly attempted to bribe a Daily Maverick journalist to halt an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption. An exposé, accompanied by images from the encounter, was published this morning, 6 August. The publication obtained video footage and audio clips from the meeting. It doesn't matter who they are,' said Mbalula. IDT LINKED TO DODGY DEALINGS According to its website, the IDT is a Schedule 2 state-owned entity. It is responsible for managing and implementing infrastructure programmes on behalf of the government. Malaka was suspended by the IDT's board of trustees following irregularities in an R800 million oxygen plant tender. Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson has recommended disciplinary action against Malaka and other implicated officials. According to the Daily Maverick, the publication has also been probing Malaka's property dealings and her alleged ties to an IDT contractor. Oscar Hlatshwayo murderers jailed for life
Four people have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of engineer Oscar Hlatshwayo in a drive-by shooting in Ladysmith in 2019, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said on Wednesday. The SAPS Political Killings Task Team secured the convictions in the Madadeni High Court. At the time of his murder, Hlatshwayo was an Executive Director in the Engineering and Infrastructure Services Department of the Alfred Duma Local Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal. The following accused were each sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles into the murder of the late engineer are as follows: • Nomaswazi Shabalala who was a senior engineer at the Alfred Duma Local municipality is believed to have ordered the hit. • The second accused, Mondli Mabaso is a businessman linked to tenders at the municipality • The third accused, Mduduzi Njuza's role was to coordinate and organise the firearms used in the commission of the crime and the fourth accused, Brown Ngcobo was the shooter in the matter. The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola welcomed the life imprisonment sentence for each accused and said he hopes the convictions will provide the necessary closure to the family of the murdered Civil Engineer. Orlando Pirates part ways with one beer sponsor for another!
Orlando Pirates have officially parted ways with their long-time beer sponsor Carling Black Label. The Buccaneers and Carling Black Label had been partners for 14 years between 2011 and 2025. However, the partnership has amicably come to an end although reasons behind that are still unclear at this stage. Now, Heineken-owned beer, Amstel Lager, has taken over from Carling Black Label as Pirates' newest beer sponsor. The launch took place at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday, 6 August.
