Rahul Gandhi should unite secular forces instead of creating divisions: John Brittas
Mr. Brittas was reacting to the Congress leader's remarks in Kerala, where he equated the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The CPI(M) Rajya Sabha leader however added that it would not impact the Opposition's unity in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Mr. Gandhi, speaking in Kerala's Kottayam on Friday (July 18, 2025), said that he fights the RSS and the CPI(M) ideologically, but his biggest complaint about them was their lack of feelings for the people.
Asked his view on Mr. Gandhi's remark, Mr. Brittas said, "It's ridiculous, preposterous." "Whenever he goes to Kerala, there is a penchant for him to speak such rubbish things. And I think the Kerala Congress Party is responsible for that. He chose Kerala as the battleground to take on RSS. Whereas, it was actually a fight between the Left and the Congress there," Mr. Brittas told PTI.
"I would earnestly wish that leaders like Rahul Gandhi, who is Opposition leader, his sole purpose should be to unite the secular forces, instead of creating confusion, division amongst the rank and file of the secular parties. He doesn't need to give lessons to CPI(M) on how to take on RSS," he said.

He pointed out that the Left parties supported the Congress-led UPA in 2004 only to keep the BJP out of power. He also questioned the role of the Congress during the demolition of Babri Masjid and the Ram Janmbhoomi movement.
"We had supported the Congress Party in 2004, just to keep BJP away from power. And we know the vacillations of the Congress Party, and how it cost the country very, very dearly," said Mr. Brittas.
"The way in which they dealt with the Ram Janmbhoomi Movement, how the locks of Babri Masjid were opened … how Congress presided over the demolition. We all know that. So, let us not bring in topics which create division amongst the secular forces," he said.
"And as the Opposition leader, he has the bounden responsibility to make sure that the focus is on BJP," he added.
Asked if Mr. Gandhi's remark may impact the Opposition unity in the upcoming Monsoon Session, Mr. Brittas said, "We are confident that we will overcome all these issues... I am very optimistic about the days to come." He added, "But I would rather expect leaders like Rahul Gandhi to be much more mature and responsible … And we are for an united opposition in the parliament." Mr. Brittas also took to X to attack the LOP over his remarks.
"The Congress party in Kerala seems determined to keep Rahul Gandhi politically naïve. He and his sister chose Kerala as their staging ground for their so-called full-frontal attack on the RSS – launched from the safe zone of Wayanad, a bastion of their coalition partner Indian Union Muslim League. No risks, all gain," he said.
Mr. Brittas said what Rahul Gandhi knows about the RSS may "well have come from our late leader, Sitaram Yechury."

Former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha, who had quit the JD(U) two years ago, on Sunday said Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar should give up the reins of the party, which has new hope in the supreme leader's son Nishant. Kushwaha, who has now floated his outfit Rashtriya Lok Morcha, came up with a post on his X handle, extending birthday greetings to his former mentor's son. Learnt from social media that it is the birthday of Nishant, the son of big brother (bade bhai), respectable Nitish Kumar. On this occasion, heartiest greetings to Nishant, the new hope of JD(U). May God always keep him happy and healthy, said the Rajya Sabha MP. I take this opportunity to make a humble request to Shri Nitish Kumar ji that it is no longer feasible for him to run both the government as well as the party, said Kushwaha, who has been in and out of the JD(U) at least thrice. A year later, Kumar did yet another political volte-face, snapping ties with the RJD and returning to the BJP-led coalition. Reacting to Kushwaha's statement, JD(U) chief spokesman and MLC Neeraj Kumar said, Each and every worker of the party is standing with Nitish Kumar, having full faith in his leadership. As regards Nishant, only he and his father can take a decision in the matter. Kushwaha had been in the JD(U) since its inception in 2003, when Kumar backed him for the post of leader of the opposition in the state assembly. A few years later, after Kumar became the chief minister, Kushwaha parted ways and formed the Rashtriya Samata Party. In 2009, he merged Rashtriya Samata Party with the JD(U) and Kumar rewarded him with a Rajya Sabha berth. However, Kushwaha again fought with his mentor and quit the JD(U) in 2013 to form Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP). In 2014, contesting as an NDA ally and riding the Modi wave, Kushwaha made his Lok Sabha debut and was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers. However, he gave up the ministerial berth in 2018 and quit the NDA to join the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan. Two years later, he left the coalition and contested the 2020 assembly polls as Chief Ministerial candidate of an alliance that included Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM and Mayawati's BSP. The RLSP drew a blank in the assembly polls, and a few months later, Kushwaha merged the party with the JD(U), and was again rewarded by Kumar with the post of parliamentary board chairman and a berth in the state legislative council. In last year's Lok Sabha polls, Kushwaha finished third in Karkat, after CPI(ML) winner Raja Ram Kushwaha and runner-up Pawan Singh, Bhojpuri superstar who contested as an Independent candidate after refusing a BJP ticket from West Bengal. In the more than 20-year-long journey of JD(U), Kumar has retained full control over the organisation, even though the post of national president, which he currently himself occupies, has been held by his trusted aides at different points in time.

BJP high command is yet to ask me to resign: Raja Singh
Hyderabad Goshamhal MLA T. Raja Singh, who is yet to resign despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 'suspending' him from the party, said that the party high command has not given him any indication to quit. 'If they ask me to resign, I will do it immediately and contest as an Independent,' Mr. Raja Singh said on Sunday, while speaking to reporters in Hyderabad after performing puja for Bonalu. 'If Union Home Minister Amit Shah asks me to resign, I will do so immediately.' Mr. Singh also made it clear that he would not join the Congress that has a 'political association with the AIMIM'. I will work with any organisation that works for Sanatana Dharma, he said. However, he said that he would extend help to anyone in establishing a model Goshala. He claimed that a senior Congress Minister spoke to him and asked for his cooperation for the Goshala. 'I don't mind which party he is from as long as the goal is the same,' he said, claiming that the previous governments politicised the reshaping of the historic Simhawahini Mahakali temple. 'I want the Congress government to build it in a grand manner,' he said. Replying to a query that Madhavi Latha, who contested as the BJP candidate against Asaduddin Owaisi in the LS elections, wanted to be considered for the Goshamahal bypoll, he said that he was ready to contest against anyone. 'The people of Goshamahal will decide who has worked for them and kept the Hindutva flag high', he said.

Mysuru event was held to floor DKS, says BJP
The Opposition BJP has described the episode of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not acknowledging the earlier presence of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar at the Sadhana Samavesha in Mysuru as a clear indication of internal rift in the Congress coming out in open. They have also termed the Mysuru programme as an event organised to sideline and floor Mr. Shivakumar rather than project the government's achievements. Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashok said the public meeting had exposed the internal rift within Congress. 'The meeting was held to teach Mr. Shivakumar a lesson. Mr. Shivakumar has now been reduced to being a second-class citizen in in his own party. It was not a government programme; it was a ritual to politically finish off Mr. Shivakumar,' he said. 'This is a feud between Mr. Shivakumar and Mr. Siddaramaiah. The BJP does not need to topple this government; it will collapse due to internal conflicts. AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala came to the State and heard the grievances of MLAs. But their disputes are now out in the open,' he remarked. Taking serious exception to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as 'barker', Mr. Ashok said such comments reflected the mindset of Congress leaders. 'The language used by Mr. Kharge is shameful and beneath the dignity of public life. Knowing that they will not come to power, they are resorting to such low-level remarks,' he alleged. From 'Maut ka Saudagar' to 'Zehreela Saap' to now this, personal abuse has become the only political currency of the Congress, he alleged. 'India is roaring under Mr. Modi, and that is the real problem of the Congress. They cannot digest the fact that a self-made leader is taking India to new heights, without their (Congress) dynasty,' he remarked.
