June 9 - Gold prices rose on Monday, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar ahead of U.S.-China trade talks aimed at resolving tensions, while platinum extended gains for a sixth straight session to scale a four-year peak.
Spot gold rose 0.3% to $3,318.76 an ounce, as of 1007 GMT, after dropping earlier in the session to $3,293.29, its lowest level since June 2.
U.S. gold futures fell 0.2% to $3,339.70.
The dollar fell 0.3% against a basket of peers, making bullion cheaper for holders of other currencies.
Investors recognise that drivers of gold, including trade and geopolitical tensions, debt concerns and weak economic growth, remain in place and should continue to support the metal in the months ahead, said Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS.
U.S. and Chinese officials will sit down in London on Monday for talks aimed at defusing the trade dispute between the two superpowers.
Stronger-than-expected U.S. non-farm payrolls data have led investors to scale back expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts this year from two to one in October.
Market attention will turn to U.S. CPI data, due on Wednesday, for further clues on the Fed's monetary policy path.
Gold, considered a safe-haven asset during political and economic uncertainty, tends to thrive in a low-rate environment.
Meanwhile, China's central bank added gold to its reserves in May for the seventh straight month, official data showed.
Spot platinum rose 3.1% to $1,201.75, its highest level since May 2021.
"It is supported by a combination of tight supply expectations, improving industrial sentiment, and technical follow-through from the broader precious metals rally," said Alexander Zumpfe, a precious metals trader at Heraeus Metals Germany.
Spot silver was up 1% to $36.30 per ounce, while palladium rose 2.7% to $1,074.76.

Silver price today: Precious metal hits new all-time high of ₹1.07 lakh per kilo; gold trades flat on MCX
New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) Silver prices soared ₹ 1,000 to hit a fresh peak of ₹ 1,08,100 per kilogram in the national capital on Monday, in line with firm global cues, according to the All India Sarafa Association. On Saturday, the metal traded flat at ₹ 1,07,100 per kg (inclusive of all taxes). Prior to that, the white metal on Friday had soared ₹ 3,000 to hit another record high of ₹ 1,07,100 per kilogram. Traders said silver prices surged due to strong investor demand, a weak dollar against major currencies, heightened geopolitical tensions, and firm industrial demand from the EV and solar sectors. Gold of 99.9 per cent purity fell ₹ 280 to ₹ 97,780 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes) on Monday. The precious metal had declined by ₹ 1,630 to ₹ 98,060 per 10 grams on Saturday. The yellow metal of 99.5 per cent purity dipped ₹ 250 to ₹ 97,350 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had depreciated by ₹ 1,500 to ₹ 97,600 per 10 grams in the previous market close. Globally, spot gold rose marginally to USD 3,312.84 per ounce. "Gold consolidated in the lower end of its range on Monday amid mixed signals. "Improving sentiment from softer European inflation and trade optimism helped silver breach the USD 36 per ounce level, breaking out of a long-standing consolidation range," Kalantri added.

Indian Army to get Rs 30,000 crore QRSAM air defence missile system boost
ANI 09 Jun 2025, 20:47 GMT+10 By Ajit Dubey New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): At a time when Indian air defence systems successfully thwarted the Pakistani aircraft, missile and drones attacks under Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army is all set to get Rs 30,000 crore boost with a new surface-to-air missile system expected to be cleared for acquisition by the Defence Ministry soon. The Defence Ministry is scheduled to take up the proposal for buying three regiments of the indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile system (WRSAM) for the Army Air Defence for deployment along both western and northern borders, defence officials told ANI here The missile systems, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, are highly mobile as they have the capability to search and track targets on the move and fire at short halts, they said. With a range of around 30 km, the system would be complementing the existing systems in the forces like the MRSAM and Akash in short to medium ranges. The missile system performance has been extensively evaluated under both day and night operational scenarios during the trials. The meeting of Defence Acquisition Council is planned to be held around the fourth week of June. During the four-day conflict with Pakistan, which used Chinese weaponry, the Indian Army's Air Defence units destroyed majority of the drones using L-70 and Zu-23 air defence guns while the Akash and MRSAM played a crucial role along with the Indian Air Force's Spydwr and Sudarshan S-400 air defence systems. The Army Air Defence is also getting a number of new radars, very short range air defence systems along with jammers and laser-based systems to deal with drones of Turkish and Chinese origin. (ANI)
