Group stage of women's Euro 2025 breaks attendance record

During the group stage of the 16-team event, 461,582 fans attended matches and 22 of 24 matches were sold out, European football ruling body UEFA said on Monday.
The first phase of the Euros also saw the record for the highest attendance at a group stage match not involving the host nation being broken twice, with 29,520 spectators watching Spain thump Portugal 5-0 in Bern, followed by 34,165 people turning up to watch Germany defeat Denmark 2-1 in Basel.
The match between Germany and Denmark also set the record for the most fans at a women's football match in Switzerland and the record for the most away fans at a women's Euro match with 17,000.
The group stage also saw the most fans at a Switzerland women's national team match, with the hosts playing Norway in Basel drawing 34,063 spectators. The record could again be broken as Switzerland advanced into the knock-out stages of a women's European championship for the first time.

The average attendance in the group stage was 19,233 spectators per match.
UEFA said that the Euros have also so far been a "resounding success" across digital platforms, with 8.4 million engagements across the tournament's social media platforms during the group stage – a 55% increase on the 5.4 million recorded during the same period in 2022.
Views were also up from 113.7 million to 189.4 million, while website and app views reached 30 million, a 92% increase compared to the previous edition of the championship.
On the pitch, the tournament delivered the most goals ever scored in the group stage of a women's European championship with 89, breaking 2022's record of 78 and just six shy of that year's record of 95 across the whole tournament.

"If it was not clear before, it is undeniable now – women's football is unstoppable and here to stay," said UEFA's women's football director Nadine Kessler.
"This is more than a tournament; it's a movement, and the response from across Europe and beyond proves that women's football is not only here to stay – it is setting the new standard."
The tournament continues until July 27.

PSG star offers himself to Liverpool
A Paris Saint Germain player looks like he's keen on moving to Liverpool. Over the course of last season, Arne Slot spoke about his admiration for the French Champions League winners several times. LFC x Nike Air Max Buy Now LFC Retro Shirts Buy Now LFC Kits Buy Now LFC Nike Training Buy Now In fact, it was only really PSG who offered any sort of resistance to Liverpool during the season. In a tense two-legged affair, Liverpool were ultimately knocked out on penalties against the eventual champions in the round of 16 in the Champions League. That game proved to be a bitterly disappointing one for the Reds. Although ultimately, Paris Saint Germain definitely deserved their victory. They have an impressive squad and now Luis Enrique's side are expected to make some changes. Among those there might be a player available for Liverpool, who could be the ideal fit for Slot's style of play. We know that with the departure of Jarell Quansah Liverpool are looking at the centre-back market. It's a difficult market at the moment with some of the biggest names having already made their decisions. Dean Huijsen opted in favour of Real Madrid, meanwhile Ilia Zabarnyi has chosen Paris Saint Germain as his destination. Liverpool have looked at a deal for Marc Guehi, although at this stage that move is very much up in the air with Crystal Palace having a firm and steep asking price despite the England international entering the final year of his contract. The Reds will be happy to wait for Guehi, especially because they also risk losing Ibrahima Konate on a free contract next year so the Palace defender could be the perfect replacement for the Frenchman. However, in the meantime, for this season, the Reds still need to make another addition. They don't want to enter the season with just three senior centre-back options available, even if the academy pairing of Amara Nallo and Wellity Lucky are highly rated. And there might be a possible deal on the table for one of the most perfect options for Slot's style of football. According to TBR Paris Saint Germain defender Lucas Beraldo has offered himself to the Reds. The report claims that the player's representatives have made a number of approaches to potential clubs and offered Beraldo to them. Among those teams were Liverpool who had an interest in the Brazilian before he moved to the French giants. Only 21-years-old, Beraldo joined PSG in January 2024, and has made 65 appearances for the club since then. Last season he started 22 league games for the club but made just one start in the Champions League, with Marquinhos and Willian Pacho ahead of him in the pecking order. Not playing above those two is no shame though. Beraldo is still young and he possess the perfect qualities to thrive in Slot's system. He wins a high volume of duels on the ground and in the air and on top of that he is a very composed passer of the ball. In fact as per Wyscout out of centre-backs in Europe's top five leagues last season who averaged over 65% success rate in defensive duels and aerial duels, Beraldo made the most forward passes (30.93 per 90) and had the most accurate pass completion rate (95.13%). Those numbers make him the perfect candidate for Slot's side, and that's why Liverpool might just be tempted by his representative's offer to play for them. Everything hinges on PSG's demands though and how much they are willing to sell him for.

Golden Boot winner to substitute - England's Mead on role 'shift'
England forward Beth Mead's role at Euro 2025 is very different to the one she enjoyed three years ago. Named player of the tournament and winner of the Golden Boot, Mead played a starring role in England's success at Euro 2022. Her stunning performances were capped off with six goals and five assists - the most in the tournament. It led to countless honours including being named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, as well as coming runner-up in the Ballon d'Or and Uefa Player of the Year Awards. But so far in Switzerland, 30-year-old Mead has started just one of England's four games, scoring once in the 6-1 Group D win over Wales. She has adapted to a new role as one of Sarina Wiegman's 'finishers' - a term the squad use to express the importance of the substitutes. "You've got to be ready to go into the moment," Arsenal forward Mead told BBC Sport. "You've got to be ready to go into a position that you might not want to play or don't normally play in and that was what was different for me [against Sweden]. "I ended up playing in midfield as a number six and then I was a number 10 - I changed position a few times in the game and I loved it. "I love being on the pitch, I love being able to do what I can do for the team but they're the things that you have to be able to do as a player. "You have to expect the unexpected and be willing to do what you need to do for the team and the greater good." England's substitutes have played a key role in Switzerland, scoring three goals en route to the semi-finals. Since Euro 2022, England substitutes have scored four result-altering goals - all in knockout games - which is more than any other nation. It is up to Mead, among others, to continue to provide Wiegman with squad depth. "It's not easy when you know you're not starting and you're playing well or whatever but I think that's what has set us apart as a team," she added. "The togetherness, the willingness to try to make each other better, to try to make each other feel like we can figure it out. "That's something that I've also seen as a shift of my role. I really know how important that is - from being a starter to being competitive in training - to make us better. So far I think we're doing a good job of that." Now We Will See The Real Marcus Rashford At Barcelona
BRIGHTON, ENGLAND - APRIL 02: Marcus Rashford of Aston Villa celebrates scoring his team's first ... More goal during the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Aston Villa FC at Amex Stadium on April 02, 2025 in Brighton, England. (Photo by Aston Villa/Aston Villa FC via Getty Images) Marcus Rashford first debuted in Manchester United's number 10 during a 2018 preseason friendly against Bayern Munich. Although it does not have the same status as the number 7 shirt at the club, worn by George Best, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo, the jersey still holds significance. A diehard fan, Rashford knew this well, writing on social media after the game: "Wearing the shirt worn by United legends, honoured." One of the previous owners of the number, Wayne Rooney, who'd had the jersey for over a decade, could be found in the comments. "It suits you mate," the Liverpudlian added. His manager at the time, Jose Mourinho, explained that Rashford had decided to take the number 10 shirt. "He wanted it," Mourinho told MUTV. "He always wanted it. Of course, he respected the big Rooney and then Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] "It's something fantastic for the kid, let's give the shirt to him." In the seven seasons that followed, there were moments when Rashford looked capable of living up to expectations. The problem is that they remained just that, moments; he has never consistently delivered. MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - NOVEMBER 28: Ruben Amorim, Head Coach of Manchester United, speaks to Marcus ... More Rashford of Manchester United as he prepares to enter the pitch as a substitute during the UEFA Europa League 2024/25 League Phase MD5 match between Manchester United and FK Bodo/Glimt at Old Trafford on November 28, 2024 in Manchester, England. (Photo by) Last season was the final straw for the one-club man. Coach Ruben Amorim publicly humiliated him before a loan move to Aston Villa for the final half of the campaign. Upon returning to Manchester, it was no secret he was one of five players pushed into a so-called 'bomb squad' of exiles ostracised from the squad to push them closer to the exit door. So it was not exactly surprising to see new signing Matheus Cunha handed Rashford's number 10 shirt ahead of the new campaign. More of a shock is the Mancunian's next destination. Having impressed at Aston Villa last year, he has caught the eyes of one of Europe's biggest sides, Barcelona, and is on his way to Catalunya to play with Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski. Former Manchester United players have not greeted the news of the move well, as they were unhappy with his behavior before leaving the club. "If you assess where Marcus Rashford is at as a professional footballer, you strive as a youngster to get to the very top and play for clubs like Manchester United, and when you're there, you appreciate it," ex-United player, Teddy Sheringham, told Sky Bet. "You don't throw it away and say you want to leave. "I find the whole episode very soul-destroying, compared to the way I was back in the day and how I strove to get the privilege to play for such a huge football club. "To hear someone talking the way he is talking, saying he wants out - I didn't like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doing that at Arsenal, I thought it was soul-destroying, and I hope Rashford doesn't get the move that he's hankering for. 'From my perspective, if you go from Manchester United to Barcelona, that's a step up that he hasn't deserved.' Rashford has been handed a move to one of Europe's elite because the Catalans have some hefty financial challenges. Despite a significant uptick in form last season, Barcelona remains a club struggling to balance the books. The decision to prioritise contract renewals for young players ahead of flashy summer signings is sensible. However, it does mean the club has to be more innovative in recruiting to fill the gaps in the squad. Hiring a player like Rashford on a loan de-risks what would have been an expensive bet on a talent that might not deliver. No one thinks the Mancunian will arrive in Spain as anything other than a backup option for a squad already well-stocked in the forward roles. His six-month spell at Aston Villa last season was impressive, but it's hard to see him landing another big move if this one goes wrong. Rashford's problem is that, despite turning 28 in October, the withering assessment made by his former coach Jose Mourinho about him having 'potential' but not established ability still rings true. "He is potentially a very good player," the Portuguese manager said. "He's a very good player in some models of play, he's a very good player in some positions. As a target man, as a number nine, I don't think he has the sort of goals that the top striker has. 'For me, he can't get better as a number nine. He can get better playing from the left side, playing with another one as a target man but for him to be the target man in matches where United are dominant and playing against defensive teams and low blocks, I think it's difficult for him.' At Barcelona, Rashford might find more opportunities playing through the middle, and it will be fascinating to watch whether he can establish himself. One thing is sure: It's now or never.
