Rio Ferdinand dramatically changes tune on Sesko as Man United snap him up
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has made a U-turn on RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, who is closing in on completing a switch to Old Trafford. United agree deal with Leipzig After wrapping up a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, United turned their attention to signing a striker, promptly identifying Sesko as their top transfer target for the position. United settled on Sesko from a two-man shortlist that also included Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins. Unlike with Watkins, where United seemingly had a clear path, the Red Devils encountered strong competition from Newcastle in the pursuit of Sesko. The Magpies lodged two bids for Sesko, the latest one valuing him at €90m. Ruben Amorim's side sent in a slightly lower offer and even presented Sesko with lower wages than Newcastle were willing to give him. Earlier on Thursday, news broke that United had found a breakthrough as they struck an agreement with Leipzig for the Slovenian. Sesko instantly boarded a jet to England and pictures have since surfaced of him in Manchester as he looks to finalise his move. A week ago, Ferdinand weighed in on the Sesko vs. Watkins debate and didn't mince his words as he made it clear that United would be better off if they pursued Watkins. Ferdinand argued that Sesko would be a big risk signing, unlike Watkins, who is already familiar with the dynamics of the Premier League and would hit the ground running from the first day. However, the six-time Premier League has now changed tune, emphasising that Sesko has what it takes to thrive at United. Ferdinand's latest stance on Sesko Speaking on his Rio Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand explained, 'Wow. Huge money, £70m being spent.' 'Listen, he's a young guy, been at Leipzig, playing, scoring goals. Last season, he played 45 games and scored 21 goals, six assists, so the guy knows where the back of the net is. That's almost one goal every two games.' 'Yes, it's a different league, it's the Bundesliga, but he does play international football as well, he scores in international football and he knows where the net is.' The former defender continued, 'A lot of people are going to go and suggest, 'Oh, has he got the experience?', and I was one of those guys in that camp going, 'Do you know what? Where is the player that can show the young, inexperienced strikers that we have at the club how to do things? In times of need, who do they look to?'' 'He's going to have to step up and be that guy. Can he do it? Yes, he can do it, he's got huge potential. But one of the things, as we've seen in recent years, our strikers, when they come in the door here, you're not afforded a lot of time, there ain't a great amount of patience and you've got to hit the ground running.' Ferdinand gives his verdict on United's new-look attack Sesko is likely to be a mainstay in a new-look United attacking line also consisting of fellow arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Cunha and Mbeumo have already tasted minutes with United during the pre-season tour and have certainly looked the part. Ferdinand said about the trio, 'What I would say is Manchester United scored 44 goals last season. They've now invested in three strikers at the top of the pitch that have between them 48 goals last season, so that's four more than the whole Manchester United squad got last year so that's a huge improvement in that sense.' 'Two of those guys have played in the Premier League and scored goals here. Sesko, now, has to go and transform his form, his goals, his menacing play, at times, into the Premier League and that's the big question.' 'What I would say is not only are the goals a step up, but I would say the mobility in the front areas now is something, as a defender, I'm looking at now and I'm thinking differently about Manchester United's frontline.' 'I'm going to have a physical presence up there and I'm going to have a physical test from all three positions and I've got people that can run and move up there, they're mobile. They're the things I was asking for over the last couple of years up there so more of that.' Ferdinand noted that United's recruitment team deserve a lot of praise for transforming Ruben Amorim's attacking department after a goal-shy 2024/25 campaign. Rasmus Hojlund to AC Milan deal agreed: Di Marzio
Following the agreement with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United have decided to focus on outgoings for the time being. One player directly impacted by the Slovenian's arrival is Rasmus Hojlund. The Dane, who managed a meagre four Premier League goals all season last time out, could find himself on his way out of the club. The 22-year-old has made it clear that he would like to stay and fight for his place, but Ruben Amorim is likely not too convinced and a move away beckons. AC Milan are reportedly in pole position with the Denmark international reluctantly open to a return to the Serie A. AC Milan in pole The Rossoneri would prefer a loan deal with an option to buy, just like the deal INEOS agreed with Barcelona for Marcus Rashford. But the Red Devils were eyeing a permanent solution. But as per the reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, the 20-time English league champions have finally relented, and have agreed to the loan with an option formula. Milan are currently waiting for the United No.9's green light before proceeding. 'Manchester United have opened the door for Rasmus Højlund on loan with an option to buy . Loan with an option 'As we told you in recent days, AC Milan are looking for a striker to bring to the Rossoneri, and have identified the former Atalanta player from Denmark as one of the potential additions to the squad. 'Important news has arrived from England today: United have agreed to a loan deal with an option for Højlund, and Milan — given the deal's terms — are currently in pole position to bring him into the team. However, the player's approval for his departure is still pending.' It will be interesting to see how Rasmus Hojlund will react to being pushed out and the price United eventually ask from the Italian giants. Serie A football will suit the ex-Atalanta ace, and hopefully, he can regain his form and help United earn a decent fee from his eventual sale. Wimborne aim to build on record-breaking season after summer of change
WIMBORNE Town have undergone a summer of change at the Wyatt Homes Stadium, but The Magpies will be aiming to build upon a record-breaking season last time out. Wimborne finished the 2024/25 season strongly, securing their highest ever finish in the Non-League pyramid when they finished tenth in their first season back in the Southern League Premier South. After winning the Southern League Division One South on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign, The Magpies adjustment to life back in step three wasn't without its challenges, with frequent swings in form. However, The Magpies finished the season as the leagues in-form team which included a club-record 10-match unbeaten run, where they beat rivals Poole Town, second-placed AFC Totton, and drew with eventual-champions Merthyr Town. (Image: Steve_Harris) Despite this, there have been several departures this summer. Members of the step four title-winning squad have returned to the division with Jez Bedford and Matty Neale joining Winchester City, Jack Lovell and Harry Baker joining Shaftesbury, and Harry Morgan joining Wessex Premier side New Milton. Club legend Toby Holmes, who re-signed for Wimborne in December, also left for Shaftesbury, while Matty Burrows and Harvey Wright, who both joined the club last summer, left for Weymouth and Dorchester respectively. Veteran goalkeeper Ross Flitney announced his retirement, utility player Adam Biss left, and in a management re-shuffle Assistant Manager Chris Senior departed, replaced by First Team Coach Luke Hardy. Former Northern Ireland player Josh McQuoid joined Wimborne. (Image: Wimborne Town FC) Despite the departures, The Magpies moved swiftly to retain the vast core of the players who did so well in that memorable unbeaten run, including club captain Sam Jackson, top scorer Will Fletcher, Manager's player of the year Josh Carmichael, President's player of the year Sam Roberts, former AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Cam Plain, right back Drew Eccott-Young, the popular pair of Bill and Ben the Wimborne men (Walker and Scorey) and the versatile duo of Cam Munn and Owen Roundell. Wimborne opted to recruit young up-and-coming players, securing the much sought-after services of Joe Smith, who last season scored 23 goals in 28 games for Bemerton Heath Harlequins, and Lewis Williams who had 46 goal contributions in 46 games for Andover New Street. (Image: STEVE HARRIS) Other young forwards have joined in Max Bustamante and Joe Ryan, South Korean midfielder Seung-Woo Yang, defender Alex Borges, and the vastly experienced former Northern Ireland international Josh McQuoid. During pre-season The Magpies have seemingly gelled well, with pace, power and energy going forward, and versatility throughout the squad. There have also been some eye-catching displays including a 2-1 victory over National South side Salisbury, and a 4-1 hammering of Bognor Regis Town. With the new season around the corner, fans are quietly confident that this young, reinvigorated side can surprise a few and build upon last season's success.
