This humanoid robot's ‘daily routine' is kinda bonkers

Digital Trends13 hours ago
There doesn't seem to be a week that goes by without a new humanoid robot being announced in China.
The latest contraption to step into the limelight is LimX Dynamics' Oli, a humanoid robot that, according to a video featuring the bipedal bot, can do just about anything.
The three-minute video shows a typical day in the life of Oli, which in some moments seems to be more human than robot.
The footage starts with Oli doing weights in a gym, which is a bit odd considering it's a machine without any actual muscles to speak of. But LimX sees it as a good setting for showing off some of the robot's versatility.
Oli the humanoid robot then shows up for a kung fu session in a nearby park. Sparring with a human, Oli is kind enough not to deck the senior citizen, and the two participants depart amicably.
At 9 a.m. the robot strolls into the LimX factory that's already filled with humans working diligently — though for how much longer we can't be sure. In another demonstration of its abilities, Oli is shown lifting some boxes and placing them into a wheel-based autonomous assistant. After that, LimX's new creation performs a sorting task using a gripper for hands. It's pretty good, though a bit slow, which is why the video hits double speed for this part.
Next, Oli turns up in the office. One of its human colleagues decides to kick him in the back, apparently because she's annoyed that Oli's leaving early. Demonstrating remarkable stability and balance, the robot stays upright and continues calmly on its way, seemingly content to let the earlier physical assault slide.
Nine o'clock in the evening is, apparently, 'dancing time,' and Oli is shown pulling some moves that are only marginally more impressive than what Elon Musk managed when he opened a Tesla plant in Shanghai a few years back.
Notably, Oli features a modular design where parts can be easily swapped out to suit particular tasks. For example, the gripper can be changed for a hand featuring five robot fingers, which would give it more control over intricate sorting tasks. Its modular design also means it can be fitted with third-party cameras, microphones, cameras, sensors, and other peripherals.
The robot is also described as a general-purpose humanoid platform with advanced autonomy features intended for embodied AI research, developer integration, and complex, real-world robot applications.
Overall, Oli's performance is very impressive, with the 165-cm, 55-kg autonomous robot clearly already at an advanced stage of development.
LimX's new humanoid robot is available in China for about $22,000, with an international version expected soon.
Alongside China, the U.S. is also investing heavily in humanoid robot designs. Just last week, we got a glimpse of how Figure's robot is coming along, while Amazon, Tesla, Boston Dynamics, and Apptronik are also known to be developing similar robots.

TSMC Shares Soar 4.9% To Record After Trump Announces Tariff Exemption

Shares in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of the world's largest chipmakers and supplier to U.S. firms including Nvidia and Apple, hit a record high in Taipei on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump said the company would be exempt from a newly announced 100% tariff on chip imports. The exemption would also apply to other foreign chipmakers such as Samsung that have announced investment plans in the U.S., at a time when Washington has been moving to reduce dependence on imported chips and cut into large U.S. trade and federal government deficits. 'The 100% tariff rate is eye-catching, but the meat of it is the focus on U.S. investment and manufacturing,' said Daniel Nystedt, vice president of Taipei-headquartered TriOrient Investments, a private investment fund. 'TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix and others that have invested in or plan to invest will pay no tariff, according to the president's comments. That's big,' said Nystedt. 'For now, it means most cutting-edge chips will enter the U.S. tariff-free, including key AI accelerator chips and HBM (high bandwidth memory) chips needed in AI servers.' TSMC closed up by 4.9% at the Taiwan Stock Exchange to 1,180 New Taiwan dollars on Thursday. Its locally traded shares have soared 28% in the past 12 months on demand for AI-related chips. TSMC's U.S.-listed ADRs have climbed by nearly half during the same period at the New York Stock Exchange; they rose by 4.9% to $242.62 on Thursday following the Trump announcement. TSMC's market capitalization of more than $1 trillion is more than 11 times that of one-time U.S. chip icon Intel; it boasts at least two billionaires: founder Morris Chang, worth $5 billion on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List today, along with its vice chairman F.C. Tseng, worth an estimated $1.5 billion. Chairman C.C. Wei was at the White House alongside Trump in March to announce plans to increase the company's U.S. investment by $100 billion in the next five years, bringing its total American investment to $165 billion. TSMC already operates a plant in Arizona. In stock trading in South Korea today, shares in Samsung Electronics rose by 2.5% today after Trump's announcement; SK Hynix gained 1.5%. Back in Taiwan, shares in GlobalWafers, a supplier of silicon wafers that also operations in Texas and Missouri, soared by nearly 10% to NT$375, their best close since March. Trump's new semiconductor tariff policy is less friendly to smaller overseas chipmakers that don't produce chips stateside. 'The clear downside is for smaller chip makers unable to make US investments. But even there, it's important to remember President Trump has proven flexible on tariff implementation. If US automakers or other industries feel their chip supplies are at risk, they can seek help - and may get it,' Nystedt said.

Xpeng stock pops after P7 launch, sees as 'another game changer'

-- Xpeng shares rose 0.7% in premarket trading Thursday after the electric vehicle maker unveiled its next-generation P7 sedan, which Jefferies called 'another game changer.' Jefferies analysts, who attended the launch event, described the new model as 'a high-performance sports sedan with exceptional handling, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7s,' with 'a more avant-garde and aggressive design language.' The vehicle is longer and wider than the current P7, but lower, giving it 'a wide-body, low-slung stance that accentuates its coupe-like dynamism.' Jefferies noted that more than 10,000 refundable pre-orders were placed within 6 minutes and 37 seconds of the presale opening, despite pricing yet to be announced. The firm estimates a price of about RMB250,000. The car comes standard with an 800V SiC platform, a 5C ultra-fast charging battery offering a range of up to 820 km, and an 87-inch AD-HUD. It also includes a 1.84m² triple-layer silver-coated glass roof for heat and UV protection. Jefferies highlighted the model's use of three self-developed Turing AI chips delivering 2,250 TOPS in computing power. 'The accelerated deployment of Turing chips will help improve XPeng's vehicle margin, in our view,' stated Jefferies. The firm expects monthly sales of the Next P7 to reach 6,000 units, above consensus forecasts of 4,000, and total company deliveries to hit 40,000 by September. Jefferies reiterated Xpeng (NYSE:XPEV) as its 'top pick OEM,' noting the company is on track to turn its first quarterly profit in the fourth quarter of 2025.
