This Jaguars defender will benefit greatly from hiring Anthony Campanile

USA Today31-01-2025
Of course, the hope and expectation is that the entire Jacksonville Jaguars defense will benefit from the addition of Anthony Campanile as the new defensive coordinator.
However, given Campanile's coaching background and track record, one player in particular may really benefit from this hire: linebacker Devin Lloyd.
Lloyd is coming off a season where was a very sound tackler, making 106 of his 111 attempts, according to PFF, which resulted in him being a reliable run defender as well. Among eligible linebackers, Lloyd ranked ninth in run defense grade.
In coverage, that sound tackling ability helped Lloyd limit yards after the catch and he also recorded one pass breakup and an interception.
Campanile joins the Jaguars having been a linebackers coach in the NFL since the 2020 season. Those first four seasons came in Miami, and the most recent one in Green Bay.
Under Campanile's guidance, we saw steady progression from the entire Packers' linebacker room this past year.
Rookie Edgerrin Cooper was one of PFF's highest-graded linebackers overall and was a two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Week, Decembers NFC Rookie of the Month, and was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
Fourth-year linebacker Quay Walker had arguably his best season and prior to a Week 15 ankle injury, was on a four game stretch where he ranked among the best at the linebacker position in pressures, yards per catch allowed, and run stops, according to PFF's metrics.
With Campanile having such a diverse coaching background having operated in a variety of schemes, we don't exactly know what his system in Jacksonville will look like.
But the on-field results from Campanile's former players speak for itself and his ability to put the linebackers in a position to be successful each week.
In addition to that, having coached in different defensive schemes that include blitz heavy operations, the usage of simulated pressures, and an emphasis on disguising coverages, Lloyd can be a real chess piece and weapon in the middle of Campanile's defense.

Broderick Jones is Settling in at Left Tackle: ‘He's a Natural Left'

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Broderick Jones revealed that he is far more comfortable with his footwork and hand usage right now than he was at OTAs and minicamp. The transition to left tackle has gone smoothly. 'I do. Just getting back into it and throwing hands in general,' Jones said. 'Just the football aspect of it. Coach [Tomlin] always tells us, it's football-like, not football. All of it helps us when it comes down to it.' Jones also thinks he's improved in his pass sets. 'I would just say the tempo in my pass sets. Tempo in my pass sets helps a lot because I see so many different rushers. I'd say that's the biggest thing I've taken out of it so far,' Jones said when asked what he's done really well in the preseason. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has seen a noticeable difference in Jones at left tackle. 'Broderick's background was different than the three guys we drafted last year,' Smith said. 'Those guys had played a lot of college starts. I know Broderick is a terrific athlete for a tackle, and he was forced to play right, and then the three-man competition we had with Dan [Moore Jr.] playing left only, and then obviously Troy [Fautanu] being a rookie. 'Then Troy got hurt, so it ended up Broderick playing right tackle. He feels like he's a natural left. We've been able to kind of settle that down. Both those guys have done a nice job.' Jones is coming off standout performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars ans Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first two preseason games. Jones did not allow a single pressure in 12 snaps against Jacksonville according to Pro Football Focus. He was going up against Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen, too. Jones knows that the regular games are where things matter the most. Training camp and the preseason are just a stepping stone. 'Training camp is great, but you never know the true test until Week 1 rolls around, and you actually get to put it on tape,' he said. Jones will be protecting 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers' blindside this season. For Jones, he's just focused on his job and not the outside noise, however. 'I think football is football. They can put Coach [Tomlin] back there. My job is still to block for him,' Jones said. Mike Tomlin has been impressed with what he's seen from Jones and starting right tackle Troy Fautanu thus far. 'I think they've gotten better every day,' Tomlin said after the final training practice at St. Vincent College. 'Broderick got slowed by a little day-to-day injury there for a spell, but he's really been on the uptick since his return. Same with Troy. I like the trajectory of the group. Even though we're leaving here, we still are very much in development. We have a lot of time in front of us between now and the opener.' For Jones, it's all about confidence. So far it seems like he has his swagger back at left tackle. 'I feel like once you have confidence at the O-line position, you'd be OK. … Confidence is like 80 percent of the battle when it comes to playing offensive line,' Jones said. Trades in the sports world can happen at any time, though the MLB takes the proverbial cake regarding players in a game being told they have been traded and having to leave immediately. That is not the case for the NFL, though players do find out at random times that they are moving to a new team. We had just got done with the game against y'all. I got home and I was playing some Fortnite, and I got a call from Coach Moore. I told the guys in the party, 'Hold on real quick.' I muted the mic and took the call and he was like 'Just wanted to be the first one to tell you, you know the business of the game and stuff like that. You've been traded.'" When Saunders questioned head coach Kellen Moore about where he was traded, he was told the Jaguars. Saunders stated that he was upset at hearing the news, and was shocked at the team that Moore stated. Saunders added, "The team we just played?!" A player finding out they have been traded has to be jarring, but to be traded to the team that they just competed against must be even stranger. Saunders was sent to the Jaguars for offensive lineman Luke Fortner in a rare player-for-player trade swap. Saunders spent the first four seasons of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs and was then signed to a three-year deal with the Saints in 2023. Now, he gets a fresh start with the Jaguars. Through six seasons, Saunders has secured 181 total tackles and 6.5 sacks. For more on the Jaguars and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
