Stephen King to narrate ‘Hansel and Gretel' retelling

Express Tribune10-07-2025
Stephen King is bringing his voice and signature storytelling to a haunting new retelling of Hansel and Gretel. The acclaimed horror author will narrate the audiobook version of the classic tale, reimagined with eerie artwork by the late Maurice Sendak, best known for Where the Wild Things Are. The audiobook and print editions will be released on September 2.
King, 77, says he was inspired by Sendak's illustrations, which were originally designed for a stage adaptation of the Hansel and Gretel opera in the 1990s. 'Two of his pictures in particular spoke to me,' King shared. 'One was of the wicked witch on her broom with a bag of kidnapped children riding behind her; the other was of the infamous candy house becoming a terrible face.'
In this version, King leans into the darker, more psychological aspects of the Brothers Grimm tale, staying true to its roots while adding his signature twist. 'To me, it was the essence of this story and, really, all fairy tales: a sunny exterior, a dark and terrible centre, brave and resourceful children,' he explained. 'In a way, I have been writing about kids like Hansel and Gretel for much of my life.'
Sendak's illustrations, paired with King's narration, promise to breathe new life into the centuries-old story, giving it fresh relevance and a deeply sinister tone. The Maurice Sendak Foundation's executive director Lynn Caponera praised the audiobook, calling King's reading 'captivating and thrilling.'
Known for more than 60 novels, King received the Audio Publishers Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. His latest book, Never Flinch, was published in May.
The illustrated edition of Hansel and Gretel is available now for preorder.

King Felipe joins British royals to support Carlos Alcaraz at 2025 Wimbledon final

Spain's King Felipe made a royal appearance at Wimbledon 2025 to cheer on tennis star Carlos Alcaraz in the gentlemen's singles final. Seated in the prestigious Royal Box on Centre Court, the Spanish monarch joined the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte, to watch the match between Alcaraz and Italy's Jannik Sinner on July 13. This marks King Felipe's return to the tournament after last attending in 2023, where he also witnessed Alcaraz defeat Novak Djokovic in a historic final. While the King missed Alcaraz's 2024 Wimbledon win, Spain's royal house still congratulated the tennis star with a heartfelt message celebrating his "perfect blend of courage and talent." 🇬🇧🇪🇸🎾 The Wales Family with HM King Felipe VI of Spain today at Wimbledon — Imperial Material ♚ (@implmaterial) July 13, 2025 King Felipe meets the Waleses at Wimbledon 2025 — Jerseydeanne (@jerseydeanne) July 13, 2025 During a post-match interview in 2023, Alcaraz had expressed his appreciation for the royal support, saying: 'Felipe, I'm really proud that you are here supporting me… I hope you are coming more,' drawing laughter from the King and the crowd. The 2025 final was attended by notable British royals as well. Catherine, Princess of Wales—patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club—was present for both the ladies' and gentlemen's finals this year. She previously shared that Princess Charlotte had been cheering for Alcaraz during his 2024 victory. Catherine, Prince William, Charlotte, and George were seen enjoying the thrilling match, underscoring the close connection between the royal family and the iconic tennis event. With Alcaraz continuing to dominate the court and royalty showing support from both Spain and the UK, the 2025 Wimbledon final was as much a regal affair as it was a sporting spectacle.

Edgar Wright's 'The Running Man' trailer puts Glen Powell on the run

Edgar Wright is back with a vengeance in the first official trailer for The Running Man, his bold reimagining of the Stephen King dystopian novel. Scheduled to hit theatres on November 7, 2025, the film stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a man thrust into a deadly TV game show to secure funding for his sick daughter. Unlike the 1987 version, this adaptation hews closely to King's original story. Set in a grim near-future, the plot centres on contestants hunted for 30 days by paid assassins as millions watch. Desperate, Richards steps into the arena, becoming an unexpected symbol of resistance. Powell brings intensity to the role, reportedly pushing himself in physically demanding stunts, including explosions and jet-engine roar scenes, a process he described as the hardest of his career. His performance earned high praise, especially with Wright and his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World collaborator Michael Bacall handling the script. Joining Powell is a powerhouse ensemble: Josh Brolin plays ruthless producer Dan Killian, Colman Domingo hosts the deadly show, and other competitors include Katy O'Brian and Daniel Ezra. The cast is rounded out by Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Jayme Lawson, William H. Macy, and Sean Hayes. Wright's signature style is on full display in the trailer, seamlessly blending dark humour, kinetic action, and social satire echoing his work in Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver. Cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung, fresh off Last Night in Soho, captures the high-adrenaline sequences with sharp precision. Powell even secured Arnold Schwarzenegger's blessing for the role, reaching out through Schwarzenegger's son Patrick, earning praise from the original 1987 'Runner' himself. With its high stakes, physical thrills, and biting commentary on televised violence, The Running Man promises to be one of 2025's most provocative action hits. Fans eager for a fresh yet faithful take on King's classic have plenty to look forward to this fall.
