Vengsarkar surprised at ‘match-winner' Kohli's decision to retire

Hindustan Times12-05-2025

Mumbai: Former India captain and chief selector, Dilip Vengsarkar, expressed surprise at Virat Kohli's decision to retire ahead of the England Test series.
'Actually, I am surprised by the timing of the retirement, I thought both Virat and Rohit would play the England series, and then they would take a call, but before the England series is a bit surprising for me,' said Vengsarkar.
India will miss the experience of Kohli in batting, especially after Rohit Sharma also called it a day. It leaves a very inexperienced middle-order for the England tour.
For Vengsarkar, the most important quality of Kohli was how he took the onus on himself to go all the way and finish the game. It is a quality which he had first spotted in him as a youngster which convinced him of his potential.
Even though the former India captain had been following the progress of Kohli from his under-16 days, the Delhi batter's innings against New Zealand Emerging Players at Brisbane in the 2008 Emerging Players Tournament convinced him he was ready for international cricket.
In that game played on July 18, Kohli, a middle-order batter, was asked to open the innings. He went out and cracked an unbeaten 120 to help India chase NZE's total of 248 for six for the loss of just three wickets.
'After the 2008 U-19 World Cup victory, we picked him for the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia where we selected future prospects, not those who are discarded for the Test team. There I watched him score a hundred against a New Zealand side, which had around seven Test cricketers in their team, coached by Glenn Turner,' said Vengsarkar.
'Kohli was asked to open the innings and we were chasing a stiff target, and he scored 120 not out. What I admired about him was that even after scoring a hundred, he made sure that his team won the game. I always gave preference to batsmen who won matches and not just scored hundreds and look for statistics. Playing for the team, winning matches was very important for me. I knew, he should be groomed for the highest level.
'And, that is what Virat has done for the Indian team throughout his career, won matches for the team. He never chucked his wicket away after getting a hundred, he went on grinding the opposition,' said Vengsarkar.

Virat Kohli's 'cockiness' on debut series revealed by his senior teammate: 'He owned the dressing room'

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan walked down memory lane to recall his first impression of Virat Kohli when he entered the dressing room for his maiden series. Kohli entered the Indian team carrying high expectations on his shoulders, having led the Under-19 squad to a World Cup triumph in 2008. He began his international journey with an ODI debut on the tour of Sri Lanka and, over time, established himself as one of the greatest white-ball batters the game has ever seen. Pathan, a key member of the squad during Kohli's debut series, reminisced about the young Delhi batter's entry into the dressing room, noting how he exuded confidence right from the start. "He won the Under-19 World Cup as a captain in 2008. He came into the dressing room with confidence and cockiness. I saw him very closely in Sri Lanka. He owned the dressing room, and it did not feel like he was a youngster," Pathan said in a video on his YouTube channel. However, when it comes to IPL, he didn't have the best of starts to his journey in the cash-rich league. In his first three IPL seasons, he couldn't cross the 400-run mark, but the 2012 edition marked a turning point as he surpassed 500 runs for the first time. From there, he never looked back, eventually becoming the highest run-scorer in the tournament's history. Pathan also reflected on the RCB superstar's IPL journey and how the peak of his career began in the 2012 edition. "But when his IPL journey began in 2008, he got around 150 runs. It was not that special, but by the time the whole cycle of his youth ends in 2012, before that came in the 2011 season where he scored more than 500 runs for RCB for the first time in his IPL career. The peak of his career started from there," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. Kohli had announced his retirement from the longest format last month after featuring in 123 Tests for India, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

PSG imprint on Portugal's Nations League triumph

Kolkata: It was in the media room of Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in December 2022 that Roberto Martinez said his time with Belgium was over. One month later, he was named Portugal coach which meant moving from one team whose performance had not matched potential to another. After Sunday's Nations League title that may be changing. Portugal did not have outspoken players such as Kevin de Bruyne but they did have a Cristiano Ronaldo-sized problem when Martinez took charge. Martinez's predecessor Fernando Santos, in whose eight-year reign Portugal had won the 2016 European Championship and the 2018-19 Nations League, did not start Ronaldo in the knockout rounds of the Qatar World Cup. It led to Goncalo Ramos scoring a hattrick against Switzerland. But Morocco beat them and Ronaldo exited in tears. In Munich on Sunday, Ronaldo was in tears again, this time in joy after Portugal beat Spain 5-3 on penalties after open play had ended at 2-2. At 40 years and four months, he had scored to make it 2-2 in the 61st minute. It was his 138th goal in 221st international and he had lasted nearly all of the regulation 90 minutes before Ramos replaced him. The roles have been reversed. Martinez had ensured that by announcing on joining that Ronaldo would be part of his plans. It is unlikely to change anytime soon. 'A captain with the kind of experience he has is essential to create the values and to show personality,' Martinez said after his first trophy since the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013. Ronaldo had no shot on target till he scored and looked a step slower than the rest on the pitch. But twice he stole from Lamine Yamal, once tracking back to dispossess the Spaniard who was born when Ronaldo was 46 internationals old. Ronaldo had scored against Germany in the semi-final and has eight goals in the last nine Nations League matches. Spain, the reigning European champions, were fluent with the ball and capable of going direct. They did in the 15th through a long ball from central defender Dean Huijsen which split Portugal and found Nico Williams who released to Pedri whose shot didn't bend enough. Their first goal in the 21st minute though came from a collective effort that involved Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal, the move starting and finishing through Martin Zubimendi. With half-time looming, Spain scored again by surging forward through Pedri, Oyarzabal timing his run to perfection to finish the move. Spain have been thrilling going forward but France and now Portugal have shown their defence can leak goals. 'We struggled more in the second half, we were tired,' said Oyarzabal. 'Our fighting spirit and togetherness were decisive today,' Bruno Fernandes told the media group RTL. 'When we stay together like this, we're very difficult to beat.' Nuno Mendes was at the front and centre of both Portugal goals, scoring the first in the 25th minute with a screamer and setting up Ronaldo, albeit off a deflection from Robin le Normand, after leaving Yamal trailing in his wake for the second. Mendes is a left-back who, at times, was Portugal's most advanced player. He had the most number of successful dribbles for Portugal (4), most entries in the opposition box and played 16 passes in the final third. He also neutralised Yamal and ghosted past him in ways few dare to against the 18-year-old prodigy. Mendes won five tackles and seven duels. From shielding Pedri, making a crucial block to deny him in the 63rd minute, linking with Vitinha, running at Spain's defence with Rafael Leao, adding numbers in the midfield, finding Bernardo Silva with a raking pass and converting his penalty, Mendes had the perfect end to a season where he had won four titles with Paris St-Germain (PSG), including the Champions League one week ago also in Munich. The PSG imprint on Portugal's triumph was evident in the ease with which Vitinha would drop into defence when Mendes bombed up and in the way Joao Neves would jump into midfield. As it did when Mendes and his fellow full-back Nestor Semedo nearly combined to score in the 92nd minute. Defensively, playing Neves, a midfielder, as right-back did not work but Portugal managed to keep Williams in check. The World Cup is one summer away but Portugal have shown steel and skill to be one of the favourites. Mendes is 22, Neves is 20, Vitinha is 25, Ramos 23 and the PSG quartet is not the only young ones on the roster. Add the experience of Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, a bench where Joao Felix and Diogo Dalot cannot get minutes, Leao is introduced in the 74th minute, Diogo Jota even later and it is not difficult to see why things could get hot for Portugal's opponents in the USA.

Arjun Erigaisi overtakes D Gukesh in FIDE chess rankings, becomes new India No. 1

Arjun Erigaisi is the new India No. 1 and overtaking D Gukesh in the updated FIDE rankings. In the June FIDE rankings, Erigaisi occupies third position, ahead of Gukesh, who is now fifth with 2776 Elo rating points. Meanwhile, Erigaisi has bagged 2782 Elo rating points. But after the conclusion of Norway Chess 2025, Erigaisi (2778.6) fell to fourth position in the live chess rankings. Meanwhile, Gukesh also fell to fifth position, with 2776.6 Elo rating points. Norway Chess 2025 saw Magnus Carlsen win the title for a record-seventh time, finishing on top with 16 points. Meanwhile, American GM Fabiano Caruana (15.5) came second, followed by D Gukesh (14.5) in third position. Meanwhile, American GM Hikaru Nakamura is fourth with 14 points and Erigaisi came fifth with 13. Wei Yi finished bottom of the standings with 9.5 points. Speaking to Chess24 at the sidelines of the tournament, Carlsen also had a warning for Gukesh, stating, 'I think if Hikaru (Nakamura) or Fabi (Caruana), or probably Nepo (Ian Nepomniachtchi) for that matter, win the Candidates they would be, at the moment, they would be a favorite in a match against Gukesh. Hikaru's come close twice. He's still extremely good so there's no reason why he couldn't.' 'Gukesh showed in this tournament he's on track, he's doing fantastic, but he's not ahead of track,' he added. Speaking on his defeat to Gukesh in Round 6, Carlsen said, 'Honestly, it could have meant a lot to me if I had finished off the game against Gukesh and then played a really good tournament. Now, regardless of what happens, it would kind of be like a bit of stumbling into a win.' Carlsen beat Gukesh in their Round 1 meeting, but the Indian GM bagged his first classical win against the World No. 1 in Round 6, taking advantage of a huge time scramble blunder.
