Adoor Gopalakrishnan justifies remarks on film funding for women, marginalised
He said he wanted women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST sections to continue in the film industry, and that's why he wanted them to undergo expert training in movie making and on how to utilise government funding.
Speaking to reporters here, the veteran said he was not responsible for the interpretations made by the media about his statements during the government-organised film conclave on Sunday.
He stressed that the films, being made with government finance, should have social relevance, aesthetic beauty, and technical excellence.
Stating the need for those directing films to have knowledge about movie making, Gopalakrishnan said he wanted the filmmakers from the marginalised sections to be updated periodically and get proper orientation under experts.
'The women filmmakers and those belonging to the SC/ST category should be continued in the industry…I said for their good… My intention was their upliftment. I never tried to picture them in a poor light and viewed them as derogatory," he said.
The 'Swayamvaram' director sought to know from the media what was objectionable in his remarks at the conclave.
'I saw films by some of such filmmakers. I felt that there were issues due to the lack of orientation in their films. I specifically mentioned these two categories of directors, as they are financed by the government," he further said.
Besides empowering them and giving them proper guidance, such filmmakers should also be given orientation on how to utilise public funds, he added.
He also criticised singer Pushpavati for interrupting his speech during the conclave and said she had no connection with the cinema.
When reporters asked about a police complaint lodged against him, Gopalakrishnan said, 'Let them complain. They have all the rights to the same." Earlier in the day, Dalit activist Dinu Veyil lodged a complaint with the Museum police and SC/ST Commission against Gopalakrishnan, accusing him of insulting the entire backward community through his statements in the conclave.
While Port Minister V N Vasavan extended support to Gopalakrishnan, saying that his words were misinterpreted, Higher Education Minister R Bindhu rejected the veteran's remarks and said the government has the responsibility to ensure justice to those who have been denied all these years.
Gopalakrishnan has not criticised the government's stand, Vasavan said, adding that he just suggested exercising caution while disbursing funds in connection with the funding for filmmakers.
Bindhu, however, said there is nothing wrong with the government providing funds for women and those belonging to the SC/ST community for expressing their creativity.
Stating that filmmaking is an expensive process and there is nothing wrong with providing funds for the same by the government, the minister also said that it is one of the best projects of the cultural affairs department.
Gopalakrishnan on Sunday said the current practice of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) providing Rs 1.5 crore to prospective filmmakers from marginalised sections has not been producing the desired results.
He said the aspiring filmmakers belonging to these sessions should first undergo proper training by experts before such funds are disbursed. PTI LGK KH

T'puram: Women's organizations, including Women's Collective in Cinema, Disha and Anweshi have filed a complaint with state women's commission against filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan for his controversial remarks at the film conclave. In the complaint, the organizations have demanded that Gopalakrishnan be summoned for an explanation. Javed Akhtar says he wanted to assist legendary Guru Dutt and become a director
Mumbai, Aug 6 (PTI) Veteran poet-lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar has revealed the late actor-filmmaker Guru Dutt had a profound influence on him so much so that he harboured a dream of becoming a director and even assisting him. At a special session organised to pay tribute to the Hindi cinema legend as part of his centenary celebrations in Mumbai on Wednesday night, Akhtar (80) shared that his dream to work with Dutt remained unfulfilled. 'After my graduation I'll go to the film industry and join Mr Guru Dutt for a couple of years and then I'll become a director. When you're 18-year-old things are simpler and easier, so that is what I had decided. It is so unfortunate that I came to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1964, on October 4 and he passed away on October 10, so I could never ever see him," Akhtar said. 'I had really thought that I when I go (to Mumbai) somehow I'll manage (to work with Guru Dutt) because (poet-lyricist) Sahir (Ludhianvi) sahab was a good friend of Guru Dutt and he had written songs for 'Pyaasa', I thought this connection will work. I had thought I'll assist him for a while but it didn't work," he stated. Akhtar, known for penning iconic films like 'Sholay", 'Deewar", 'Zanjeer", and 'Don" alongwith Salim Khan, said he was impressed at how Dutt would communicate complex narratives through visuals. 'I was highly impressed by Guru Dutt in my college days, that when I was 17 or 18-year-old I used to refused to see films of certain superstars because I believed they're bad actors, it means I had some choice. Guru Dutt had a deep impression on me as a teenager. 'We had great directors like Mehboob (Khan), Bimal Roy, but Guru Dutt was the first person who spoke through visuals. There were other directors who could give good performances, shoot at right locations, create right ambience in the film, and well-written films but talking through visuals is something that was taught to us by Guru Dutt," Akhtar noted. The session was attended by filmmakers like Sudhir Mishra, Hansal Mehta, and R Balki, and film critic-author Bhawanaa Sommaya, each echoing Akhtar's sentiments of reverence for Dutt. The event concluded with a special screening of 'Pyaasa", which was attended by Dutt's family including, his granddaughters Gouri and Karuna Dutt, late actor Johnny Walker's son Nasir, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, actor Akshay Oberoi, and others. Mishra reminisced about watching Dutt's film, 'Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam" at least six times as a teenager, with his grandmother. 'Guru Dutt is an experience, he could see him again and again, at the age of 22 he would mean something else, and today he would mean something else. I keep revisiting him. There's nothing in my life that I've done that is not influenced by him, and I haven't measured upto to him, but I'm trying to. 'Every film that I've done, every shot that I've taken, every scene I've written, and song that I've tried to picturise, I can't imagine it without Guru Dutt. He has taught us how to make films, how to see a scene, how to take a blueprint, which is a script, and he rewrite it in a film," the filmmaker said. Mehta revealed that during his FTII days in Pune in the early 1990s, he created a music video that he referred to as a 'plagiarised" song sequence from Dutt's iconic film, 'Kaagaz Ke Phool." He candidly described his work as a 'vulgar replication", and added that he hopes to pay tribute to the late filmmaker someday by making a movie that talks about 'heartbreak and love". 'I grew up knowing about him through my closest friend, who was his nephew. I used to hear stories about his uncle. I discovered his (Dutt) films much later, 'Pyaasa' is the first film I saw and it left a lasting impression on me. More than the number of films I've made, I've had more heartbreaks, and love. 'Guru Dutt has taught me that pitying oneself can be beautiful, I began to think of self-sympathy as a virtue and that I should celebrate it, and that heartbreak is cinematic. I wish I can make a film that talks about heartbreak and love to pay tribute to the person who influenced me," Mehta noted. Balki said Dutt was the reference point for his 2022 movie, 'Chup: Revenge of the Artist", which depicted the pain of an artist who suffers from 'wrong criticism". 'We live in an era where resilience is celebrated more than sensitivity, and sensitivity with a little bit of luck can become luck and if not supported by luck, goes down. As the most sensitive artist, we love to celebrate a person who has fallen and come up. Guru Dutt to me is an epitome of sensitivity. 'He inspires me to remember sensitivity, it is important to feel vulnerable and not be understood by many people, you just go on. Today, the pressure is more on artists. The more I watch his films, I look at the vulnerability of the filmmaker, I never look at the craft," Balki stated. As part of the centenary celebrations of Dutt, some of his most iconic films such as 'Pyaasa" (1957), 'Aar Paar" (1954), 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand" (1960), 'Mr & Mrs 55", (1955), 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" (1962) and 'Baaz" (1953) will be screened across India from August 8 to 14 as part of the retrospective. The restoration of these titles has been undertaken by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), along with Ultra Media and Entertainment Group, who holds the rights to these movies. Theatre stampede: NHRC issues show cause notice to Telangana Chief Secy
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Hyderabad, Aug 6 (PTI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued show cause notice to the Telangana government Chief Secretary as to why it should not recommend a compensation of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of the woman, who died in a stampede during the screening of actor Allu Arjun's film Pushpa-2 last year. The action came while dealing with a complaint lodged by advocate Rama Rao Immaneni, who alleged that lathi charge by the police and lack of necessary arrangements when Allu Arjun entered the theatre, resulted in death of the woman Revathi and injuries to her children. Following the Commission's direction, the city police submitted an action taken report on March 3, 2025. During the course of enquiry, it was revealed that permission for the event was rejected and Allu Arjun did not have permission for a road show and that the allegations of lathi charge were false, the report said. The report said arrangements were made for crowd control as professionally done for new movie releases despite the rejection of permission. The inadequate infrastructure at the theatre, including limited parking, entry and exit points, led to the crowd gathering and subsequent tragedy. The officers who were at bandobust duty on the occasion exhibited exceptional proactive response in managing and controlling the unexpected crowd and also saved the life of the woman's son and shifted him to a hospital, it said. However, the Commission observed that it fails to understand why the police allowed the crowd, the accused actor, theatre management to gather at the place for the event which did not have the permission. The police should have taken legal action against accused actor, management at the very first occurrence, prior to incident itself, for breaking the law and attending the unlawful events, the Commission said. Observing that the police might have foreseen the present accident, which compelled them to deny permission, the Commission sought an additional report from the police. The police reported to the Commission on July 14, 2025 that permission was granted on December 4, 2024 for the pre-release screening of Pushpa-2 at four theatres at RTC X Roads in the city. The report said police denied permission for the actor's visit to the cinema theatre citing public safety and crowd control concerns. The theatre management was informed in writing and advised to notify the actor and production team accordingly, the police report said. Due to the anticipated large crowd in a densely populated area, it was not possible to control or restrict the public movement prior to the crowd gathering, it said. The report pointed out that despite prior security arrangements by police, an unexpected crowd surge occurred. Officers managed the situation promptly, though legal action at the time was not feasible, it said. Subsequently, on December 5, 2024, a case was registered against the theatre management, actor Allu Arjun, and his security staff. Ten people, including the actor, were arrested. Arjun secured bail in the case. The Commission has considered the report and noted that 'there was negligence and lapse in maintaining public order on the part of police authorities in providing adequate assistance and ensure the safety when it was clear that there will be a huge crowd gathering". The Commission issued a show cause notice to the Chief Secretary as to why it should not recommend compensation to the kin of the deceased. It also issued a direction to the city police to ensure fair investigation in the matter.
