Trinamool leader takes veiled jab at PM with Sindoor remark, BJP calls it treason

India Today4 days ago

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Udayan Guha on Wednesday stoked a major political row by taking a veiled jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making an apparent reference to Operation Sindoor, a day ahead of his visit to North Bengal.Guha said that someone who sold tea earlier is coming to Bengal to sell vermillion, seemingly implying that the PM is going to seek votes in the name of Operation Sindoor success.advertisement"Earlier someone might have been in the tea business, today some might be in the vermilion business. Someone used to sell hot tea earlier. Now hot vermilion is flowing through the blood, and they are rushing so far in North Bengal to sell that vermilion," Guha said at an event on Wednesday.
"My point is, don't try to put poison among people like this. Don't try to create division among people by injecting religious poison into them," he added. In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, Indian forces carried out precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, and caused considerable damage to the Pakistani terror infrastructure on May 7. The strikes were seen as a major military victory for the Indian armed forces and a strategic one for the Modi government.advertisementTaking a strong exception to Guha's statement, the BJP slammed the TMC leader, saying his remarks amounted to "treason"."Udayan Guha, a key member of Mamata Banerjee's cabinet and the Minister for North Bengal Development, has made a comment that is not only utterly condemnable but amounts to treason!" Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar wrote on X. He also called Guha's remarks an insult to the Armed forces and the martyrs.Meanwhile, the Mamata Banerjee-led party has distanced itself from Guha's remarks, saying it still stands with the Centre as far as the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions are concerned."The party doesn't approve that statement. Our stand is very clear. Our party is standing by the Centre in this particular matter. During the fight against terrorism, we are playing the role of a responsible Opposition party," TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said.Meanwhile, the TMC, earlier in the day, took a "migratory bird" jibe at PM Modi without naming him."Since the migratory birds are making their seasonal visit to Bengal, why not answer one simple question: Why is the Centre still withholding Bengal's rightful dues amounting to Rs 1.7 lakh crore?" the party posted on X.PM Modi will visit West Bengal on Thursday and is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a Rs 1,010-crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts, apart from addressing a rally in Alipurduar.advertisementPM Modi will reach Alipurduar at around 1 pm on Thursday after first attending an event in neighbouring Sikkim.

Monks meet Amit Shah, raise issue of ‘violence against Hindus' in Bengal, cross-border infiltration

During home minister Amit Shah's visit to West Bengal, monks from several organisations met him raised their concerns regarding alleged 'violence against Hindus' in the state after an uptick in cross-border infiltration. As per reports, the monks cited the violence in Bengal's Murshidabad and Malda districts. During a meeting at Swami Vivekananda's ancestral home, the monks added that they raised their concerns while underlining the spiritual and cultural legacy of India. "We have raised the atrocities on Hindus in Bengal's Malda and Murshidabad districts and infiltration from Bangladesh but Shah did not respond to specific queries or any incident cited by monks," a monk, who was part of the meeting, told news agency PTI. "A central theme of the discussion was what is needed for collective effort. Participants reached a consensus emphasising the importance of working together as a single unit. Working together was the shared sentiment. This unified approach is aimed at benefiting the general public, specifically by exploring how spirituality can be applied in daily life for the welfare of people," International Vedanta Society joint general secretary Tejamayi Maa told PTI. During his visit to the eastern state, the Union Home Minister accused the TMC government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of "opposing" Operation Sindoor. "Under Operation Sindoor, we conducted a deep strike 100 kilometers into Pakistan, targeting their headquarters. Numerous terrorists were killed, but this seems to trouble Mamata Ji" Shah said while addressing party leaders and workers. The BJP leader also accused the Bengal CM for "favouring" Pakistani terrorists. (With PTI inputs)

Kharge slams Modi for using military ops in poll rhetoric

Bengaluru, Jun 1 (UNI) In remarks that could escalate political tensions, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of repeatedly politicising military operations and using national security for self-promotion during election campaigns, a charge that is expected to draw a sharp response from the BJP. Addressing reporters here, Kharge took direct aim at the Prime Minister's recent speeches invoking cross-border military action, warning that such rhetoric risks reducing the Army's work to a tool for electoral mobilisation. "I say this without any political bias – everyone must come together and focus on those who are threatening or intimidating our soldiers. But instead, we keep hearing: 'I did this, I achieved that, I alone can do this.' Issuing such self-congratulatory statements, especially about the armed forces, is not appropriate," Kharge said. He underscored that the nation owes its security to the sacrifices and professionalism of the Indian Army, not to any individual leader. "The entire country stands today because of our military. Whatever the Army does, it does for the nation, and we all support them," he noted. Referring to the Prime Minister's own past statements, Kharge said, "Modi himself had earlier declared that he would not interfere and had given full authority to the armed forces and their chiefs. If that is the case, then why does he keep referring to military action in his speeches? Why bring this up repeatedly in the middle of an election campaign?" Kharge warned that matters of national security should not be used for political mileage. "Using Army operations in election rhetoric for self-image or votes is simply not right. This is a matter of national dignity and security, not personal publicity," he added. While the Congress leader insisted he was speaking beyond party lines, political observers expect the BJP to strongly rebut the remarks. The party has in the past accused the Congress of undermining the morale of the armed forces whenever such comments surface. The BJP has often positioned PM Modi as a decisive leader on matters of defence and national security, particularly following the 2016 surgical strikes, the 2019 Balakot air strikes and Operation Sindoor after Pahalgam terror attack. Kharge's comments challenge that narrative head-on, questioning both the intent and tone of the Prime Minister's speeches. Political reactions from the BJP are awaited. UNI BDN SS
