Blue Note Jazz evokes 2000s nostalgia with Black Radio Experience lineup

The 4th annual Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa is throwing it back to the early 2000s with its Black Radio Experience.
R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan, hip-hop group the Roots and drummer and producer Questlove, all of whom broke into the mainstream around the start of the century, are on the bill for the Labor Day weekend event this year.
Others set to perform at this year's event, set for Aug. 29-31 at the Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, include co-founder and artist in residence Robert Glasper, jazz group Hiatus Kaiyote, pop-rock singer Willow and rappers Lupe Fiasco and Terrace Martin. A full lineup of announced artists can be found online, with more to be revealed.
Ticket presales start at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, and general onsale begins at 9 a.m. Friday, May 9.
'Black Radio Experience and Robtober are the platforms I use to bring all my favorite artists and collaborators together as one big family reunion,' Glasper said in a statement, referencing his annual October residency at New York City's Blue Note Jazz Club. 'I'm honored to be part of such an amazing community.'
The night before performances kick off, on Aug. 28, Glasper plans to host an exclusive opening dinner and concert to kick things off. In addition to the festival throughout the weekend, afterparties are set for Aug. 29-30, featuring special guests such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Talib Kewli and D-Nice.
Blue Note Jazz Festival Napa launched in 2022 as a hub for all things hip-hop and R&B. The multi-stage festival has seen headliners such as John Legend, Chance the Rapper, and Mary J Blige over the years. Last year, it launched the Black Radio Experience as a more intimate spin-off.

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Lin-Manuel Miranda performed a Hamilton medley with classroom instruments and discussed the Broadway musical's 10-year anniversary on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday. The actor, 45, was joined by Jimmy Fallon and The Roots for his songs "Alexander Hamilton" and "My Shot," which the group performed while playing a xylophone, kazoos and other classroom instruments. Miranda also recalled what it was like to perform Hamilton for the first time. "I just was so relieved it was out of my head and on a stage. You know it took me like seven years to write this thing," he told Fallon, adding, "I'm just incredibly proud, incredibly proud." He also announced that the Hamilton film will play in theaters beginning Sept. 5. "So tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of Hamilton and we've been celebrating all year, but we have one more way to celebrate which is that, you know, when we -- we filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted," he said. Tickets are now on sale. Miranda, the show's original star and creator, was also memorialized as a Madame Tussauds New York was figure on Tuesday. "Honestly, this is very strange," he said, per Playbill. He has previously honored the show's anniversary with original cast members at the Tony Awards. Lin-Manuel Miranda & Jimmy Fallon Perform ‘Hamilton' Medley With Toy Instruments

Lin-Manuel Miranda brought Hamilton back to the stage—well, the classroom—during Tuesday night's (Aug. 5) episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, teaming up with Fallon and The Roots for a joyful medley of the musical's most iconic numbers using toy instruments. In celebration of Hamilton's 10th anniversary, the Broadway creator and star donned a colonial-style costume and joined the Tonight Show host and house band to reimagine 'Alexander Hamilton' and 'My Shot' using classroom staples like tambourines, triangles, melodicas and kazoos. In addition to the musical tribute, Miranda sat down with Fallon to reflect on Hamilton's legacy and revealed a new milestone: a theatrical release of the filmed stage production is officially set for Sept. 5. 'We filmed most of the original cast performing Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit,' he said. 'We decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home… But Sept. 5, you'll be able to see Hamilton in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico.' Miranda also shared a now-viral anecdote about missing the night Prince attended Hamilton, revealing he was DJing a friend's wedding while the rest of the cast partied with the icon. 'The entire cast was up all night partying with Prince… It's the FOMO of my life.' The Hamilton filmed version originally premiered on Disney+ in July 2020 and featured a 'live capture' of the stage show with the original Broadway cast. The Tonight Show episode also included a musical segment with Chance the Rapper and a guest appearance by The Daily Show's Jordan Klepper.
