Angels slugger Mike Trout is closing in on 400 homers, 1,000 RBIs with aim on the postseason

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mike Trout arrived in Philadelphia in time to catch the unveiling of a new target in the deepest part of the ballpark — the 2026 All-Star game logo, complete with the Liberty Bell in the center of the design.
The Angels slugger has something to aim for in Philly.
As a home run target? No, the oversized symbol that celebrates next year's All-Star game is raised well beyond the centerfield wall and out of reach to even
Schwarbombs
in Ashburn Alley, closer to the retired numbers on the bricks at Citizens Bank Park.
As a potential destination for next season? Making the All-Star game is more on the nose for Trout, an 11-time selection who hasn't been picked to play for the American League since 2023.
Yet each time Trout plays in Philadelphia, just over
40 miles from the slugger's New Jersey hometown
, talk tends to drift from All-Star games, his injuries, his upcoming career milestones — he's closing in on 400 homers and 1,000 RBIs — or a rare Angels' push at the postseason, and lands right on the possibility he'll one day suit up for the Phillies.
'I hear it all the time,' Trout said with a laugh outside the Angels' clubhouse on Friday. 'Right now, I'm enjoying myself with this team in here. These guys come to the ballpark every day and play hard. It's hard not for me to see it, because I see it and hear it all the time.'
He'll settle at least a crack at the 2026 All-Star Game.
'It would definitely mean a lot,' Trout said.
Trout entered the start of a three-game series against the Phillies having the kind of season that has defined most of his last five seasons in California. When he's healthy, he's on. He has a .283 batting average, .433 on-base percentage and .478 slugging percentage with eight home runs and 23 RBIs in 41 games since he came off the injured list on May 30. Otherwise, it's more stints on the IL. This season, he was
hampered by a bone bruise
on his left knee that cost him time.
Trout was the designated hitter on Friday night against the NL East champion Phillies, who could certainly use a right-handed bat with pop in the outfield as they make their own playoff run. He did some light pregame work in the outfield ('get my feet under me') and hoped he'd return to right field in the near future. Trout said his knee did feel 'a lot better' after four days off and off his feet over the All-Star break.
'I'm just happy to be in the lineup, contributing,' he said. 'Years past, it's just come to the ballpark, not be able to at least hit. That's been frustrating, that's been tough.'
He again expected a full house of fans from his hometown of Millville, New Jersey, on hand to root him on as the three-time AL MVP started the game with 395 career home runs and 995 career RBIs.
'To think about it, it's just how fast it's going,' Trout said. 'Just trying to enjoy every minute of it. The milestones are awesome. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting them.'
Trout would have
blown by those numbers
years ago had it not been for
his injuries
that have allowed him play more than 82 games only once since 2019.
'Things happen,' he said.
There are no guarantees he'll chip away at those numbers over the weekend — Trout has never gone deep at Citizens Bank Park.
The New Jersey native has kept his ties to the area as he blossomed into one of baseball's great sluggers; his family still lives in the area, he collaborated with Tiger Woods on a new golf course, and yes, the Eagles season-ticket holder still bleeds Kelly green.
The Angels were 47-49 headed into Friday, but only four games out of a wild-card spot. Trout played in three career playoff games in 2014. Los Angeles' 47 wins are the most for the franchise at the All-Star break since it had 49 in 2018.
'The team in there right now, we've got a great mindset,' he said. 'We've got a great group in there. We pass the baton at the plate. We're tough outs.'
None tougher at his best than Trout. He's trying to become the 20th player in baseball history to hit his first 400 home runs with one franchise.
'This guy is a superstar,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. 'I saw him when he first came up and he hit the ball as far as you could think. He runs down the first base line, it sounds like a horse, just big and strong and fast.'

Sabrina Ionescu still has eyes on Liberty season amid All-Star festivities

We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW INDIANAPOLIS — Liberty stars Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart met near center court Saturday night. They may be wearing different color threads for this year's WNBA All-Star game but they still made sure to stick to their preseason routine. It started by locking pinkies, then they continued with the rest of the special handshake they do before every game and then Stewart went in for a tight hug with a toothy smile. Saturday's game — a 151-131 win by Team Collier over Team Clark — was the punctuation on a fun three days of festivities during the league's midseason break. Ionescu went in with the right mindset. 'Absolutely no desire or care if we win or not,' Ionescu told The Post with a laugh. 'No, I mean, I hope I don't even play that many minutes to be honest, we play in two days.' 3 Sabrina Ionescu #20 of the New York Liberty defends against Breanna Stewart #30 of the New York Liberty during the first quarter of the 2025 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Getty Images She's got a point. The Liberty are scheduled to host the Fever on Tuesday. The team's break — if you can call it that for those who participated in All-Star festivities — was short-lived. 'Obviously, it's fun,' Ionescu said. 'I think it probably would have been a little bit more competitive if teams didn't play in such a short amount of days, and I think that's something as we're talking into our [collective bargaining agreement] and understanding, like All-Stars don't really have a break. We finish, we get on a flight the next day, we're here, jam-packed weekend, wanting to pour into the fans, show up to events, do 3-point contests, skills contest, and then playing a game and fly right back to practice and play in three days. And so I think that's something obviously as players we want to be able to come out here during this time, put on a great show for the fans, but also take care of our bodies because we don't have time.' 3 Sabrina Ionescu #20 of the New York Liberty shoots from a 4-point circle against Breanna Stewart #30 of the New York Liberty during the 2025 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on July 19, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Getty Images Caitlin Clark had been anxiously awaiting this weekend since it was announced last summer that Indianapolis would host the 2025 WNBA All-Star weekend. Despite earning her second consecutive All-Star nod, Clark watched the Friday and Saturday night festivities from the sidelines as she continues to deal with a groin injury. Clark said it's 'certainly unfortunate' she couldn't participate in the 3-point contest nor the All-Star Game like she planned. 3 Caitlin Clark watches following a WNBA All-Star basketball game against Team Collier, Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Indianapolis. AP But she said she did her best to balance enjoying the weekend and receiving treatment for her injury. The Liberty are scheduled to host the Fever on Tuesday for their first game after the midseason break. Clark's status for that game is uncertain. Sonia Citron didn't think Ionescu was serious about giving the Mystics rookie half of her $62,575 prize money for winning the 3-point contest. But Ionescu swears she's a woman of her word. 'I didn't think she was being for real at all,' Citron said when Ionescu offered before the event. 'But I guess she was.' Consider this a tip of the crown from the champion to the first-year player who had courage to compete against the seasoned veterans.

Pacquiao's comeback falls short as Barrios retains WBC welterweight title in majority draw

Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) — Manny Paquiao pushed back against his doubters, the odds and even Father Time on Saturday night, but in the end fell just short on judges' scorecards as Mario Barrios escaped with a majority draw to retain the WBC welterweight championship. Two judges scored the bout a draw, and Barrios was given a 115-113 victory on the third card. Pacquiao, enshrined into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month, was trying to break his own record for oldest welterweight champion. He was 40 when he emerged in 2019 split decision over Keith Thurman. This also was his first appearance in the ring in nearly four years for the 46-year-old Filipino, a loss by unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugas. Barrios, a 30-year-old from San Antonio, was a -275 favorite at BetMGM Sportsbook. He hoped to bounce back from a split-decision draw on Nov. 15 against Abel Ramos, but didn't exactly come away with an emphatic victory in improving to 29-2-2. The heavily pro-Pacquiao crowd loudly booed the decision. Pacquiao's resume includes 12 world championships in eight divisions. He now is 62-9-2 and said right after the fight this likely wasn't his last. Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KOs) retained his WBC super welterweight title when Tim Tszyu (25-3) didn't come out for the eighth round in the co-main event. Fundora floored Tszyu with a left hand in the first round and dominated the action with 118 power punches, according to Compubox, by repeatedly backing down the Australian. 'I'm the bigger guy," said Fundora, who led 69-63 on all three judges' cards. "Everyone says I'm a bully in the ring, so I thought I should start really bullying these guys. I just kept working on aggression my whole career and we've just been adding.' It was a big week for Fundora, who was accepted into Harvard and then won the rematch with Tszyu. The first fight on March 30, 2024 was much closer, with Fundora emerging with a split-decision victory. The Coachella, California, resident also had been the WBO champion, but that organization stripped him of his belt for not fighting mandatory challenger Xander Zayas. ___ AP boxing:

Brewers hold off Dodgers again for 9th straight win

Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddy Peralta won his seventh straight start, Isaac Collins and Joey Ortiz homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 on Saturday night to extend their win streak to a season-best nine. Shohei Ohtani hit his National League-leading 33rd homer and drove in three runs for the Dodgers. Tommy Edman and Miguel Rojas both went deep in the eighth to pull the NL West leaders to 8-7. But then Ohtani's flyball died on the warning track to end the eighth, and Trevor Megill threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 23rd save as Los Angeles lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Milwaukee improved to 5-0 against the defending World Series champions this year, including a three-game sweep at home last week. Peralta (12-4) wasn't particularly sharp, giving up four runs and five hits in five innings as his ERA rose from 2.66 to 2.85. But the Brewers tacked on three insurance runs to maintain the lead after the All-Star right-hander exited. After the teams traded four-run rallies in the third, the Brewers took a 5-4 lead on Collins' 363-foot homer over the short right-field wall in the fourth. They made it 6-4 on Caleb Durbin's RBI double in the sixth. The Dodgers pulled to 6-5 in the sixth when Edman snapped an 0-for-29 skid with a single and Ohtani sliced an RBI single to left. Milwaukee pushed it to 7-5 in the seventh when Andrew Vaughn hit a two-out RBI single, and 8-5 in the eighth on Ortiz's homer. Los Angeles starter Emmet Sheehan (1-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in three-plus innings. Key moment Peralta prevented an even bigger rally in the third when, with four runs in, a runner on third and no outs, he struck out Andy Pages, got Michael Conforto to ground out to shortstop with the infield in and retired Edman on a fly to left. Key stat The Dodgers were hitting .157 with four runs in four-plus games against the Brewers this season before scoring four times in the third. Up next Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (4-1, 3.88 ERA) faces Brewers lefty Jose Quintana (6-3, 3.28) in Sunday's series finale. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 1
