Jaipur dialysis patient's 'luxe cars' drive hospital staff to Rs 10 crore extortion bid
DCP (south) Digant Anand said the trader was threatened with dire consequences if the money was not paid, and that three of the four arrested men had links to a private hospital.
The trader's mother regularly visited the private hospital for dialysis. "The accused noticed that the complainant's mother used to come for treatment in different luxury cars, which drew their attention," Anand said.
The DCP identified the accused as Jaiprakash Kumawat (24), a former dialysis technician at the private hospital; Lokendra Singh alias (27), a current employee at the hospital; Mahesh Kumawat (25), cousin of Jaiprakash; and Lakhan Kasana alias Harry (21), a resident of Mansarovar.
DCP Anand said the conspiracy was orchestrated by Jaiprakash, a former dialysis department staffer who had developed a gambling addiction and was under pressure to repay large debts. Jaiprakash conspired with Lokendra, Lakhan, and his cousin Mahesh, all of whom had knowledge of the trader's schedule and assets. Lokendra befriended the family's driver, Sunil, and used the friendship to gather details about the trader's business, movements, and family members.
Posing as gang members, the accused made threatening calls on May 27 and 28, demanding the money and warning of harm if it was not paid.
Investigations revealed the phone number used for the threat belonged to a labourer from Alwar, whose Aadhaar details were fraudulently used to procure the SIM. Police seized the mobile handset, a motorcycle, and a Thar vehicle used in the crime.
Police said Jaiprakash borrowed Rs 5 lakh from Lokendra and also owed money to other creditors. Lokendra, who lost his eyesight due to an untreated infection, gave Jaiprakash funds meant for his own eye treatment. Under mounting pressure, the group decided to extort money by exploiting the family's hospital visits and perceived wealth.
The arrests were made after tracing the suspects through technical surveillance and local intelligence.
"The accused were assured that the businessman would eventually give in and pay the money," said an officer.

Goa police nab mastermind of ₹1 crore digital arrest scam at Delhi airport
The Goa Cyber Crime Police have arrested the alleged mastermind behind a Rs 1 crore "digital arrest" scam, upon his arrival at Delhi airport from Singapore, an officer said on Sunday. He was taken into custody on August 15 and remanded to five days of police custody, according to Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta. The accused Anil Tripathi, a resident of Marina Bay Financial Centre in Singapore, is the seventh person arrested in connection with the case registered in December 2024 at Marna, Siolim (North Goa), said Gupta. The scam involved a fraudster impersonating a Delhi Crime Branch officer on WhatsApp and coercing a woman into believing she was involved in a police case. The accused allegedly sent forged Supreme Court documents and forced the victim to transfer Rs 1 crore through multiple transactions into three different bank accounts, police said. "Tripathi was tracked through technical and financial analysis, as well as the interrogation of previously arrested suspects. A Look Out Circular had been issued, leading to his detention at Delhi airport and subsequent transit to Goa," said Gupta. Investigators claimed that Tripathi is a repeat offender. He was previously arrested in Singapore for a fake tech support scam amounting to USD 64,000, in which he funnelled about USD 15,000 into his Indian bank accounts from a senior Singaporean citizen. The current case is registered under Sections 318, 319(2), and 336(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 66-D of the Information Technology Act. Apple leases 2.7 lakh sq ft office in Embassy Zenith, Bengaluru for 10 yrs
Apple India Private Limited has inked a lease agreement for a 2.7 lakh sq ft office space in Embassy Zenith, located on Sankey Road in the upscale Vasanth Nagar area of Bengaluru. The 10-year lease has a total rental outlay of Rs 1,010 crore. This will be Apple's second office in India's tech hub and could be its largest, housing more than 1,200 people, according to industry watchers. It may also become one of the largest single-tenant office leases in Bengaluru's commercial real estate market. According to lease documents from Propstack, the terms of the lease specify that Apple India will occupy the 5th to 13th floors of Embassy Zenith, covering a substantial carpet area of 196,179 sq ft, or 268,737 sq ft including chargeable area. The monthly rent is Rs 6.315 crore, translating to an effective rate of Rs 235 per square foot. The lease includes an annual escalation clause of 4.5 per cent, which allows for steady upward revision in rent throughout the lease term. To secure the lease, Apple has deposited Rs 31.57 crore as a security amount, as per the agreement. In addition to base rent, the lease agreement includes payments for maintenance of common areas and car parking facilities, which contribute to the total cost burden borne by the company. Detailed financial disclosures indicate that Apple India will pay approximately Rs 1,010 crore over 10 years, covering rent, car park charges, and common area maintenance (CAM) fees. Apple has also expressed interest in potential future expansion within the same building, with plans to lease the ground to fourth floors as well. This additional area measures around 121,203 sq ft, which would nearly double their office footprint, bringing it to nearly 4 lakh sq ft. The building is owned by Mac Charles (India) Limited, affiliated with Embassy Group, a major player in Bengaluru's commercial property development sector. Queries to Apple and Embassy Group did not elicit a response as of Sunday night. In 2021, Apple leased 1.16 lakh sq ft at a monthly rental of Rs 2.43 crore in Prestige Minsk Square, a commercial building located on Cubbon Road in central Bengaluru, where it began operations in 2023. This office space expansion is part of Apple's large-scale plans to increase production in India and open four more retail stores in Bengaluru and Pune, in addition to stores in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai, as well as its two marquee stores in Mumbai and Delhi opened in 2023.
