Last week, dozens of Malaysians and Indonesians left their homes with nothing but conviction in their hearts. From different walks of life activists, students, mothers, artists, professionals they came together to join the Global March to Gaza, a multinational civil society campaign calling for an end to the inhumane blockade on Gaza.
They were not politicians or diplomats. They were ordinary people taking an extraordinary stand representing a region that has, time and again, voiced deep solidarity with Palestine.
The march brought over 4,000 participants from more than 80 countries to Cairo. Their goal was peaceful: to approach the Rafah crossing and call for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, where over two million people remain trapped under siege.
Among them was the Southeast Asian delegation known as 'Qafla Al-Samoud,' made up of volunteers from Malaysia and Indonesia who believed it was time to act.But on June 14, the mission was halted.
Participants were blocked in Ismailia. Some were detained, others deported. A protester holds a placard depicting French-Palestinian lawyer and member of European Parliament for La France Insoumise (LFI) party Rima Hassan during a pro-Palestinian demonstration called by several French unions in Paris on June 14, 2025. French Democratic Confederation of Labour trade union (CFDT), French trade union General Confederation of Labour (CGT), French National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions (Unsa) Unsa, French group of trade unions Union syndicale Solidaires (SUD) and French trade union "Federation Syndicale Unitaire" (FSU) are calling for people to join "the mobilisation for Palestine" on June 14, 2025 and denounce "the Israeli authorities mortifying headlong rush and the atrocities" in Gaza, according to a joint statement. Threats of violence, confiscation of passports, and prolonged holding at checkpoints made clear that although no official ban was declared the march would not be allowed to proceed.
This was not due to Israeli interference, as many first assumed. Instead, it was Egyptian authorities who imposed the restrictions. For a peaceful campaign that operated within Egyptian law and coordinated with embassies, the message was deeply troubling: solidarity is seen as a threat.
Yet, what they tried to stop on the ground only grew stronger across the globe.
From Mexico to Cyprus, more than 50 parallel actions were carried out. The Freedom Flotilla's 'Madeleine' ship set sail from Italy, carrying aid and international hope before being intercepted by Israeli forces.
Despite physical setbacks, these efforts have reignited a wave of public support for Palestine not just in the Middle East, but globally. The Southeast Asian presence in the march is 'historic.' Because these weren't just protests, they were proof that the people of Southeast Asia refuse to be complicit in genocide.
They marched for every child under rubble, every parent grieving, every classroom destroyed. They marched because silence is no longer an option.
Now that the campaign has concluded, the next phase must begin: sustained pressure, legal action, media awareness, and regional mobilisation. We must continue to raise our voices, support humanitarian efforts and hold power to account.
The Global March to Gaza is not over. It is only just beginning.

Malaysia condemns Israel's 'Greater Israel' agenda, settlement expansion

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia unequivocally condemns, in the strongest terms, the latest statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, propagating the unlawful and illegal expansionist vision of a "Greater Israel". In statement on Friday, the Foreign Minister said these planned actions constitute a blatant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and are to entrench the illegal occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). The E1 project which covers area between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim, contravenes international law and relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions. "Its main purpose is to fracture the West Bank, erase Palestinian sovereignty and destroy the two State solution," the statement read. The ministry said Malaysia is equally outraged by the deliberate killings of journalists and media personnel in the Gaza Strip which constitute an egregious violation of international law and a flagrant breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2222 on the protection of journalists in conflict zones. "These targeted attacks form part of Israeli Zionist regime's systematic campaign to silence independent reporting, including to obstruct the flow of information such as settler violence, and conceal its ongoing genocide and war crimes committed in the OPT," it said. It reiterated Malaysia steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause and will continue our efforts towards the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. "The United Nations and the international community must act now to immediately halt these illegal attempts by the Israeli Zionist regime and to safeguard the inalienable rights, security, and freedom of the Palestinian people," it said. According to media reports, Netanyahu is propagating the unlawful and illegal expansionist vision of a "Greater Israel", along with the approval for building thousands of settlement units in the E1 area between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim in the OPT. – Bernama

Residents find new troop deployment 'ridiculous'

OUTSIDE the busiest train station in Washington, newly deployed National Guard troops wearing camouflage lean on a huge military Humvee. Wary residents and curious tourists stop to take photos, while inside the elegant Union Station a string trio plays What a Wonderful World. Christian Calhoun, a 26-year-old consultant who was born and raised in the United States capital, said seeing the troops made him "more than disappointed — I'm furious." "It's a lot of standing around," he added. Declaring that Washington is overrun by crime and plagued by homeless people, President Donald Trump has deployed 800 National Guard troops, as well as ordering a federal takeover of the city's police department. Over more than an hour on Thursday afternoon, the most that the handful of troops at Union Station interacted with the public was to let a French tourist take a selfie with them. Larry Janezich, an 81-year-old resident, said he had not seen the troops taking part in "any kind of meaningful action that is dedicated to the prevention of crime". Patricia Darby, a 65-year-old retiree, said the troops "don't want to be here", pointing to how some had their faces covered. Calhoun said he does "feel bad" for them as they wore heavy combat gear as temperatures soared above 33°C. On his Truth Social platform, Trump this week described Washington as "under siege from thugs and killers", with higher crime rates than "many of the most violent Third World Countries". Residents rejected the apocalyptic image. "It's ridiculous, and it really just shows how (Trump) sees the people that live here," said Calhoun. "It's totally false, and obviously promulgated on his media to justify an unwarranted exercise of federal power," said Janezich. Gerry Cosgrove, a 62-year-old tourist from the Scottish city of Edinburgh only in Washington for two days, had a simple response when asked about Trump's portrayal of the city: "To quote a phrase: fake news." Trump has also ordered homeless people to "move out" of Washington. "Where are they going to go?" Darby asked, after fetching a bottle of water for a homeless person in the heat. Randy Kindle, who volunteers with a protest group in a tent outside Union Station, said he was afraid that homeless people could now end up in confinement or jail "when all they need is help". Guadalupe, a homeless man in his late 70s originally from Mexico, said the troops had asked him to move on Wednesday night. "They have no manners," he said in Spanish. "I almost felt sick" during the interaction, he added. Calhoun said he had mostly seen the troops outside train stations, adding that he noticed they had "a lot of focus on cannabis use". Washington legalised cannabis use on private property in 2015, however it is still prohibited under federal law. Several residents also raised the cost of deploying the troops in their city. "It's a waste of money — I think DC was safe," Darby said.
