Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward futuristic transportation by successfully completing the first test flight of a flying taxi at Al Bateen Executive Airport. The flight was conducted by US-based Archer Aviation in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (Adio), marking a milestone ahead of the planned commercial launch of air taxi services in early 2026.
According to Omran Malek, Head of Autonomous Mobility and Robotics at Adio, the test flight is the first in a series of structured evaluations aimed at launching not just a flying taxi service, but a full-fledged aviation ecosystem.
Speaking to local news outlet Khaleej Times, Omran Malek said, 'We don't just test to test, but test to commercialise. We're not just launching an air taxi service, we're building an ecosystem around us , from pilot training to MROs, to talent development, to manufacturing with Archer Aviation, with the facility in Al Ain.'
The project also involves collaborations with universities to develop specialised curricula and short diplomas to prepare a skilled workforce for the sector.
Testing Under UAE Conditions
The testing phase will continue through the summer months to evaluate how the aircraft performs under Abu Dhabi's hot and dusty climate.
'Then we'll bring this aircraft to fly over the city and move into the commercial phase in early 2026,' Malek said.
Dr Talib Alhinai, UAE Manager at Archer Aviation, said that the aircraft used in this phase was not piloted, as the goal is to test environmental readiness.

'It was a vertical takeoff and landing flight. Our initial flight test operations in the UAE are focused specifically on evaluating the aircraft's performance in high temperature, humidity, and dust,' he noted.
Roadmap to Commercial Launch and Manufacturing
Once testing is complete, Archer plans to launch a small fleet of air taxis in Abu Dhabi. Key priorities for the launch include:
Safe commercial operations
Fully developed vertiports
Airspace integration
'All that is the priority for us to launch in Abu Dhabi,' said Malek. Looking further ahead, the manufacturing of the aircraft is scheduled to begin in Al Ain in 2027, with future exports planned to other interested countries across the region.
A New Mode of Daily Travel
Contrary to the belief that
flying taxis
will be exclusive to luxury travellers, Malek said pricing in Abu Dhabi will be designed to be feasible for the general public.
'As we introduce more vertiports and aircraft, that price will scale down so that it can be used on a daily basis,' he said. The announcement comes shortly after a similar successful test flight by Joby Aviation in Dubai, showing strong momentum in the UAE's push to lead urban air mobility in the region.
Dubai's First Flying Taxi Test Flight
Just this week, Dubai marked a key milestone in urban mobility with the first test flight of a flying taxi developed by Joby Aviation. The test took place at Joby's test facility at the Dubai Jetman Helipad in Margham, located along the Dubai–Al Ain Road. Dubai is now preparing for a commercial rollout by the first half of 2026, aiming to provide residents and visitors a premium air mobility service.
The UAE is leading the way in futuristic transportation, with both Abu Dhabi and Dubai successfully conducting test flights for flying taxis. These milestones reflect the country's commitment to redefining urban mobility, with significant investment in advanced technologies. By embracing innovative transport solutions, the UAE is working to become one of the most livable cities in the world, focusing on convenience, sustainability, and efficiency for residents and visitors alike.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to meet PM Modi during 2-day India visit

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to India beginning Monday (August 18, 2025), according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting, to be held on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), assumes significance as it is taking place days before Mr. Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Before calling on the Prime Minister, Mr. Wang will hold separate talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval that could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues including border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese Foreign Minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. The two sides are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Mr. Wang's visit, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday (August 17, 2025). Mr. Wang's trip is also seen as important as it comes amid increasing tensions in India-US relations following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50% that included an additional penalty of 25% for purchasing Russian crude oil. According to details released by the MEA, the Chinese Foreign Minister will land in New Delhi at around 4:15 p.m. on Monday (August 18, 2025). He will meet Jaishankar for bilateral talks at around 6 p.m. Mr. Wang and NSA Doval are scheduled to hold a new edition of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary question at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). According to the MEA, Mr. Wang will call on PM Modi at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). The Chinese Foreign Minister will be in India primarily to hold the 24th round of SR dialogue with NSA Doval. Mr. Wang and Mr. Doval are the designated special representatives for the boundary talks. Both sides are expected to deliberate on new confidence-building measures besides reviewing the overall situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the people cited above said. Though the two sides disengaged troops from the friction points, they are yet to de-escalate the situation by pulling back the frontline forces from the border. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the LAC in the eastern Ladakh region. The Chinese Foreign Minister will also meet External Affairs Minister Jaishankar. It is learnt that the two sides will also use the opportunity to lay the ground for Prime Minister Modi's visit to China to attend the annual summit of the SCO to be held on August 31 and September 1. As per the plan, the Prime Minister will embark on a visit to Japan around August 29 and after concluding the trip, he will travel to the northern Chinese city of Tianjin for the SCO summit. PM Modi's visit to China is being planned amid efforts by the two sides to repair their bilateral ties which came under severe strain following the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020. NSA Doval travelled to China in December last and held the SR talks with Mr. Wang, weeks after Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to revive various dialogue mechanisms between the two sides at a meeting in the Russian city of Kazan. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in bilateral ties. The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. The decision to revive various dialogue mechanisms was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok. The two sides also initiated a number of initiatives to rebuild the ties that included resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and New Delhi restarting issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals. Both sides are also discussing modalities to resume direct flight services between the two countries. The flight services between the two sides were suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was not restored in view of the border row. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar visited China in the last two months to attend SCO meetings. China is the current chair of the SCO.

Landslides strand 200 tourists in Rudraprayag, disrupt highways in Uttarkashi

1 2 Dehradun/Uttarkashi: Heavy rain triggered multiple landslides in Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi on Sunday, stranding pilgrims and blocking key routes to Himalayan shrines. In Rudraprayag, approximately 200 tourists were stranded on the trek to the Madmaheshwar temple after a landslide occurred around 1 pm. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams reached the spot and began evacuating people. "By evening, about 150 tourists had been rescued and shifted to a safe location. The remaining will be evacuated soon," said SDRF officer Vinit Vaibhav. "The team is closely monitoring the situation at the spot to respond to any emergency." Meanwhile, traffic remained paralysed on the Gangotri National Highway, where fresh landslides near Nalupani kept the road blocked throughout the day. Traffic was also halted at Netala and Ratudisera around 6 am, but was restored within four to five hours. The stretch beyond Dabrani has already been shut for 13 days due to heavy rain and landslides. BRO machines are at work, but clearance at Nalupani is proving difficult as debris continues to slide," said district disaster management officer Shardul Gusain. Officials added that a 100-metre stretch near the Salang bridge ahead of Bhatwadi has developed large cracks, further restricting movement. Communication networks in Uttarkashi, including in Rudraprayag, were also down for nearly seven hours on Sunday. In a separate incident in Uttarkashi, a 33-year-old man, Shyam Lal, died after his two-wheeler plunged into a gorge, likely due to slippery roads. "A joint SDRF–DDRF team recovered the body and sent it for autopsy before handing it over to his family," Vaibhav said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Kunnukara panchayat gets govt nod to set up food processing park

Kochi: A food processing park is set to come up at Kunnukara grama panchayat in Kalamassery constituency, with state govt granting administrative sanction for the project. Industries minister P Rajeeve said the 37.5-acre park will open new avenues for farmers by ensuring better value addition and market access for their produce. The minister made the announcement while inaugurating Farmers' Day celebrations, organized by Alangad Krishi Bhavan, at Kottappuram KEMH School on Sunday. He said in private sector, LuLu Group will establish a food processing facility on HMT campus in Kalamassery with an investment of around Rs 500 crore. "Once operational, the project will help increase agricultural income by connecting farm produce with modern processing and value-addition facilities. It will significantly strengthen agricultural economy of the state," Rajeeve said. According to Rajeeve, agricultural revival efforts in Kalamassery have proved successful, with paddy cultivation reintroduced across more than 1,000 acres. Alongside paddy, farmers in Alangad have diversified into production of jaggery, arrowroot powder and sweet potato powder, which are now reaching local market. Highlighting govt's push to strengthen farm-to-market linkages, Rajeeve announced that Farm to Home scheme which delivers freshly harvested vegetables and other produce directly to households will begin operations this month with the launch of its first vehicle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? According to officials from Kunnukara panchayat, food processing park is expected to attract private investment and create large-scale employment opportunities. The facility is also expected to enhance storage, processing and distribution capabilities for a variety of crops, giving farmers greater stability against market fluctuations. The minister said combined impact of the upcoming park and existing agricultural projects would help rebuild confidence in farming and make it a sustainable livelihood in the region. Inauguration ceremony was attended by local elected representatives, govt officials and farmers. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
