Dining like the stars in Beverly Hills, from Hollywood actors to Real Housewives

Times20-05-2025
Sauntering down Rodeo Drive during my trip to Beverly Hills, sunglasses in hand, I remind myself to act cool. It's far from these perfectly palm-lined streets that I was reared, and in my pre-visit anxiety I added to my wardrobe in the hopes of fitting in a little more with my surroundings. Certainly, it is the place to be rich and famous.
It is known the world over for serious celebrity spotting, seriously high-fashion boutiques and even more seriously beautiful people. On a previous visit I'd never truly delved below the surface. In fact, I spent only about an hour marching up and down Rodeo Drive, repeatedly quoting Pretty Woman, before hopping into an Uber and heading to Venice Beach.
As it turns out, there is far more to this stunning, albeit tiny, incorporated city nestled within Los Angeles County and it's more accessible to the typical traveller than you might think — meaning that I didn't really need to invest in new shoes. While a little on the pricey side, there's an experience for everyone within the area, particularly when it comes to eating and drinking.
There's so much to do in the affluent and historic LA suburb that a mere stop-off simply will not do it justice. Some of its hotels you may be familiar with, such as the magnificent Beverly Wilshire, where Julia Roberts's character stayed in that film, and the Beverly Hilton, which hosts the Golden Globes every year.
Of course, the Beverly Hills Hotel, with its signature pink and green colour scheme, is legendary. Whether you decide to stay there or simply visit to take it all in, it's not to be missed. Upon crossing its red-carpeted entrance, I feel transported back to the Golden Age of Hollywood. A favourite of the likes of Marilyn Monroe, the Rat Pack, Marlene Dietrich and Charlie Chaplin, it's just retro enough to still be cool with classic touches that keep it iconic. While the poolside Cabana Café and old-school diner-style Fountain Coffee Room are great for a quick bite, the Polo Lounge is really where you want to be.
• 15 of the best hotels in Los Angeles for 2025
It's somehow both discreet and lavish at the same time, with its striped ceilings, dark wood furnishings and sumptuous booths. Open all day, it's best to book in advance as you might find yourself competing for a table with the likes of the Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and the producer extraordinaire Judd Apatow, both of whom I spy during my visit. Be warned, though, while you might do some celebrity spotting here, it's not a place for paparazzi-style photos or autograph-hunting; all you can do is surreptitiously bask in their presence.
My meal of choice, breakfast, highlights options aplenty — I recommend the lemon, blueberry-ricotta pancakes — but don't skip a frothy cappuccino, which comes emblazoned with the hotel's logo on the foam. If you're on the hunt for a nightcap, it's just as wonderful in the evening, complete with a lively pianist, buzzy atmosphere and drinks to remember, including Star on Sunset spicy mango margarita that's worth a second round.
I'm staying at L'Ermitage, almost hidden on Burton Way, which offers a sense of peace as soon as I enter the hotel and I'm glad to rest my head in this oasis throughout my stay. It's fitted in neutral stone shades, with the enormous suites as standard (prices start from €506 per night), providing guests with more than enough room and a feather-soft bed. Costa Covo Osteria, the property's Mediterranean-influenced restaurant, is another contender for best spicy margarita in Beverly Hills. Its breakfast menu, too, is well curated. Visiting twice during my stay, I find the breakfast burrito the ultimate winner, but the juice selection is also tasty; try the Little West Clover Juice (€10.65) for that healthy LA vibe.
Of course, Rodeo Drive, the famous shopping street, is lined with the world's top designers, including Prada and Valentino, but there are many ways to eat your way up and down the road. It's a curious mix of high and low — the Gucci boutique has its own Michelin-starred restaurant, but you'll find the quintessential American chain restaurant the Cheesecake Factory across the road, and bang in the middle of it all is the Hideaway, a Mexican steak house.
Lunch there includes the Baja Tablita platter with carnitas and lots of tasty accompaniments, oozy queso fundido dip, guac with housemade tortillas, and cocktails galore — the signature One Night in Tulum is unmissable, served in a ceramic donkey and made with smoky mezcal, passion fruit and citrus. Each booth has a 'push for tequila' button, if you're so inclined. A vibrant, pink-hued cantina-style restaurant, it's quite the hotspot, as is the recently opened Bacari.
• The best US trips to take in 2022
Focused on small plates and cocktails with Mexican and Mediterranean influences, its location was previously occupied by Villa Blanca, the restaurant owned by Lisa Vanderpump, of Bravo TV's Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules fame. It's had a bit of a refurb and is now the ideal place to bring a gang to try as much of the menu as you can squeeze in — it's the exact sort of restaurant that I would love to have near me, with its fun atmosphere and great service. Pan-seared sea bass with charred shishito peppers and corn, pork belly with umami glaze, and pizza with Asian pear, brie and rocket prove to be particular favourites among my companions, so much so that one decides to return the next day to try the 'best cake', which is made with medjool dates and crispy bacon. The best of the bunch, though? The signature Bacarita cocktails (€15), which are made with tequila, watermelon, jalapeño, basil and lime.
You might notice that I'm on a bit of a margarita hunt throughout my trip and, thankfully, Beverly Hills does not disappoint — the memory of those bubblegum pink-hued Bacaritas, with their spicy tajin-coated glasses, will live with me long after I return home. If, like me, you have a particular goal in mind when you visit or have limited time to spend but want to try as much as possible, then a food tour of Rodeo Drive with Brian Rodda, of LA Food Tours, is the way to go. Taking place over three and a half hours and priced at €158 per person, you'll visit notable landmarks along the whole street as well as tasting five dishes and two alcoholic beverages. Best of all, though, are Rodda's wonderful stories and insights — you laugh just as much as you eat, and you'll leave with a serious amount of Beverly Hills insider gossip.
If luxury is something you seek, then this pocket-sized city is somewhere to add to your list — you could easily drop thousands of dollars if you're so inclined — but I've also found that it's a city for those who love food and it can be enjoyed at all price points. If I've learnt one thing, it's that the band Weezer was right because 'Beverly Hills, that's where I want to be'.
Erewhon, Beverly DrivePossibly the bougiest grocery store you will ever encounter, Erewhon is another celeb favourite thanks to its range of health-adjacent foods, such as sea moss gel, giant ranch kale chips, 225g blocks of Kerrygold butter for $7 (€6.20), and an exceptional hot bar. However, it's the smoothie bar that really draws in a crowd. While concoctions like a Kefir Matcha Cloud or a neon blue Coconut Cloud blend feature, it's the TikTok-famous Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie that you might know it for. Priced at $20 for a 20z cup (about €17.50 and 566g on this side of the Atlantic), its dusty pink hue has been Instagrammed the world over and includes ingredients such as organic coconut cream, vanilla collagen and the aforementioned moss. Sounds like a bit of a crock, right? Having tasted it, I can tell you that Bieber truly knows how to make a smoothie and I'd happily pay for it again — it really is that good. While you might have to work your way around a crowd in the store, it's well worth a stop, even if you're just marvelling at the array of items.
The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica BoulevardFounded in 1967, this famous store is one for the dairy lovers among us. With more than 600 cheeses available to buy, even just the scent on entry is enticing. You'll also find great wine, sauces, snacks and more lining its shelves, as well as a great range of handmade pasta — it's owned by Domenico's Foods, which makes those golden-hued pastas, as well as importing products and selling its goods to chefs and restaurants across the west coast. The café menu is popular with locals and visitors alike, and you'll find the store flooded with pick-up orders around lunchtime. The sandwiches are particularly beloved, especially the La Zucca, which includes crispy courgette, pesto, lemon ricotta and artichoke tapenade. If you've some time to spare, pop in and ask Eric to let you try some of his favourites — a cheesemonger with incredible knowledge, he won't steer you wrong.

OnlyFans' Sami Sheen poses on a bed in red lingerie after sharing how she was ‘nearly sex trafficked'

Content creator Sami Sheen posts a seductive photo on Instagram of her in a sexy red bra and knickers with her belly-button piercing on show in her on-the-bed pose at home in LA. The 21-year-old daughter of Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen 's update on Wednesday was part of a larger story to bring her followers up to speed with what she's been up to. This came after Sami claimed she 'almost got sex trafficked' around midnight on Monday while she and a friend were taking photos in a parking lot, which she recounted in a TikTok. That's a lot: Sami Sheen sat on her bed for a revealing Instagram post on Wednesday Sami revealed more: 'The second I saw this man I had the worst feeling in my stomach, like get the f*** away from me right now.' She said the man approached them to ask for money: 'We were at this restaurant pretty late. We didn't leave until midnight and we were outside taking photos in the parking lot, we were there for five minutes. 'Out of nowhere, this man came up to us asking for money. I said, "Sorry, I don't have any cash on me."' Sami said he became 'persistent' despite her response. 'I'm like, "Sorry, no," and he goes, "OK, have a good night."' She then revealed that a second man immediately approached them once the first guy walked away. Sami added: 'He starts to reach into his back pocket and I reach into my purse and pull out my pepper spray. I open that b**** and when he saw that he started to pull a card out.' Sami said she and her friend ran to their car and locked themselves inside. When she later reviewed photos they'd taken, she noticed the man had been watching them 'the whole time'. She said: 'Even if it was harmless, it's better to be safe than sorry even though I don't think he had good intentions at all.' Sami urged her followers to 'trust your gut' and said: 'I'm usually very aware of my surroundings and I didn't notice this man.'

How Lindsay Lohan hit rock bottom, and survived

Just like Britney Spears, Monica Lewinsky, Princess Diana and Amy Winehouse, Lindsay Lohan is a woman who was, for a long time, turned inside out for sport – by the media, by her fans, by her own mother. World-famous by 18 after starring in The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls – a Disney princess under a curse – Lohan suffered all the projected humiliation and fury the public, through their paparazzi avatars, could heap on her. The tabloids called her La Vida Lohan (a play on la vida loca – 'the crazy life'). And yet, she has, if not thrived, survived. She is not the serious dramatic actress she should be – I would like to see her Medea, her Lady Macbeth – and she is not rich. But she is alive at 39, she has a child and she is working, which means she is sober. (I say no more. Everyone has a right to privacy, even beautiful women.) She is three films into a Netflix deal, and now she headlines Freakier Friday, the sequel to Freaky Friday (2003), with Jamie Lee Curtis. These films meddle with time: the old become young, and the young old. They are charming and flimsy, and they suit Lohan perfectly. The road from child stardom is littered with corpses: few survive the journey because, when forced to be an adult so young, the child cannot grow up. Lohan is the child star that lived and, at 39, she is both young and old. That is her gift, too: to project a lifetime in a glance. New Yorker film critic Richard Brody thinks Lohan one of the best screen actors around: in 2021 he named her performance in Mean Girls the 11th best performance of the century. 'The sheer force of Lohan's personality, the enormous character that bursts even in repose from each glance and each word, is the star quality that classic Hollywood actors had and that seemed to have dwindled over time, as technique became valued over presence'. She was, like many actors, who revel in trying on other people's lives, born into trauma. Her father, Michael, a sometime violent criminal, left her mother when Lohan was three: the year her career began as a child model. (Though they later reunited.) She wrote a song about him in 2005, Confessions of a Broken Heart, which included the heartbreaking line: 'Daughter to father, daughter to father / Tell me the truth, did you ever love me?' She directed the music video, set in a replica of her childhood home in Merrick, Long Island, placed in the windows of a department store so everyone could see. Her father who, we learn from the TV in the video, is released from treatment for addiction, has crashed his car into a telephone pole, and threatens her mother, Dina; her younger sister Aliana (playing herself) weeps in a ballet costume. Lohan sits in couture on the bathroom floor and weeps too, and the window glass shatters. Neither parent could shield her from her fame and its pitfalls: Dina was her manager, and employee. (Freaky Friday, young and old, again.) She also, perhaps unconsciously, exploited her famous daughter: at one point she tried to set up a reality TV show to follow Lohan into rehab. What followed was inevitable. In 2006, Lohan arguably hit rock bottom, professionally at least. She was at the height of her partying, and filming what would be known as a total turkey, Georgia Rule, with Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman. She was constantly turning up late, or not at all, to set, costing the production a reported $375,000. Eventually, the chief executive of the production company had had enough, and set a furious personal letter to her suite at the Chateau Marmont. 'To date, your actions on Georgia Rule have been discourteous, irresponsible and unprofessional,' he wrote. 'You have acted like a spoilt child and in so doing have alienated many of your co-workers and endangered the quality of this picture.' The letter was then leaked by gossip site The Smoking Gun, and gave her already-flimsy reputation a fatal blow – Lohan became virtually uninsurable in her industry, which might explain why, for decades, her career remained in tatters. In January 2007, Lohan spent the first of six court-ordered stints in rehab; she would spend more than 250 days in rehabilitation by 2014. Between 2007 and 2014, she spent 14 days in prison for drinking under the influence – she crashed her car into a shrubbery and leapt into a stranger's car to chase the mother of her former personal assistant. (In court she had 'f--- u' inscribed on her fingernail.) Cocaine was found in her car and her body. She exhibited signs of anorexia. A judge made her wear a Scram bracelet (a device to monitor alcohol consumption) – in 2013's Inappropriate Comedy she dressed up like Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch while wearing the Scram bracelet and murdered paparazzi with a gun. The scene included a shot of her crotch from below: the definitive comment on Lohan's relationship with the tabloids. They wanted to see everything, and she let them. Lohan was clearly unwell, but the mocking was relentless: she was only a doll, after all. Saturday Night Live made her play Hermione Granger in a low-cut top. (Considering the treatment of celebrities at the time, presumably the joke was supposed to be on her, but when I watched it this week, it wasn't. She was Cady of Mean Girls again: the luminous straight woman. Even so, it was written by her mentor, Tina Fey, who should have been kinder to her troubled friend.) Lohan's first love, the actor Wilmer Valderrama, told The Howard Stern Show '[her breasts] were real' and 'she's a big fan of waxing'. Appearing on Late Show with David Letterman in 2013 to promote Scary Movie 5, Letterman asks her: 'Aren't you supposed to be in rehab now?' 'May 2nd,' she replies. 'How long will you be in rehab?' 'Three months.' 'How many times have you been in rehab?' 'Several.' 'How will this time be different? What are they rehabbing? What is on their list?' 'We didn't discuss this in the pre-interview…' 'I wish you had come out with the tags [Scram bracelet] on your dress though,' he ponders. 'I know,' says Lohan, 'it would be so funny.' Addiction is dependent on shame. Letterman piled it on her, and the audience laughed. In rehab, fellow addicts chanted the nickname that a friend of Paris Hilton's had coined for Lohan: 'fire crotch'. Her stint as artistic advisor for Ungaro was called 'an embarrassment' and a 'train wreck' by Women's Wear Daily. For I Know Who Killed Me (2007), a horror film about a stripper with a dual personality, she won two Golden Raspberry awards for worst performance – one for each personality. All of this was considered newsworthy but, when Lohan appeared to be assaulted by her then boyfriend, the Russian businessman Egor Tarabasov, on a beach in Mykonos in 2016, there was almost nothing. By contrast, in 2006 a photograph of Lohan with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton appeared on the front of the New York Post under the headline 'Bimbo summit'. It was vicious: an apogee of the popular misogyny of the time. Spears and Lohan had worked in popular entertainment since childhood. They were, despite everything, professionals. Slowly, she got better. She did some wan documentaries and then Netflix called with a deal: they called it the Lindsay Lohanaissance. The material – Falling for Christmas; Irish Wish; Our Little Secret – is hardly radical, but Lohan has it down perfectly. The acting is easy; the living is hard. Even when sick, Lohan was self-mocking and self-aware. She played Elizabeth Taylor in Liz & Dick (2012) and recreated Marilyn Monroe's final photoshoot for New York Magazine in 2008. Lohan was, at 22, playing Monroe at 36 – meddling with time again. It was her doomed period, and I wonder if the idea of closeness to Monroe comforted her – few women know what Lohan went through, but Monroe would. Lohan has a tattoo of a Monroe quote on her arm, which says, 'I restore myself when I'm alone' and she even named her (equally doomed) leggings line after Monroe's birthday: 6126. But of all the doomed screen goddesses, Lohan reminds me most of Judy Garland. She has the same canny sweetness (Taylor was never sweet); the air of eternal, yet weary, youth, like a female Peter Pan; the instinctive professionalism (Monroe, though glorious, never had that); the joy. Garland, a child of vaudevillians, was born in a trunk. Lohan was doing commercials from three. I watched some of them. Even then she had a joy to her, a willingness. The material was bad – it was a jelly advert – but she elevated it. In the end, Lindsay Lohan's story told us more about us than her. Perhaps now, in homage to Freakier Friday, this should be reversed. I can't wait for her Medea.

Expedia shares soar on upbeat forecast, US travel rebound

Aug 8 (Reuters) - Shares of Expedia (EXPE.O), opens new tab surged more than 17% in premarket trading on Friday, after the online travel agent raised its full-year gross bookings forecast and struck an optimistic tone on the recovery in U.S. travel demand. Expedia is the latest travel company to hint at a rebound in demand, following weakness earlier this year when consumers fretted over the economic impact of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. "Since the beginning of July, we've seen an uptick in overall travel demand, particularly in the U.S.," CEO Ariane Gorin said on the earnings call on Thursday. The company expects 2025 gross bookings to grow between 3% to 5%, up 1 percentage point from its earlier forecast. Morningstar analyst Dan Wasiolek expects bookings growth to accelerate further to 7% in 2026 as demand improves alongside policy visibility. Tariffs had disrupted travel spending, "but it appears prospective U.S. travelers are prepared to book again," said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. Expedia has also been focusing on simplifying its organizational structure by eliminating roles, streamlining operations and deploying generative AI technology. Its second-quarter margin grew by 190 basis points, surpassing the company's May guidance of a 75- to 100-basis-point increase. The biggest fundamental takeaway is that Expedia's continued strategic focus and tighter expense controls are driving more consistent results, said Baird analyst Michael Bellisario. Expedia also joined industry peers Marriott (MAR.O), opens new tab and Airbnb (ABNB.O), opens new tab in noting strong bookings from higher-income consumers while lower-income consumers were more cautious with discretionary spending. Expedia's shares trade at about 12.01 times their forward profit estimates, below the industry median of 14.19.
