Food safety inspections conducted at 15 railway stations across Kerala

T'puram: In a crackdown to ensure food safety and hygiene on trains, Railway Police conducted surprise inspections across 15 major railway stations in the state on Thursday. This was part of an operation titled 'Operation Pothichoru' where particular focus was given on food parcel centres, refreshment stalls and base kitchens, including those supplying meals to premium trains like Vande Bharat.
The operation was launched in response to a spate of complaints lodged by passengers through the 'Rail Madad' and 'Rail Alert' apps regarding the poor quality of food served on board, especially on high-end services. Complaints ranged from unacceptable foreign materials found in food to reports of passengers falling ill after consuming meals.
The stations covered in the operation included Thiruvananthapuram Central, Parassala, Kollam, Punalur, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam North, Ernakulam South, Thrissur, Shoranur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur and Kasaragod.
SP (Railways) Arul R B Krishna said the inspections were part of a joint initiative with railway authorities aimed at restoring public trust in food purchased from trains. "This is about ensuring passenger well-being and health. The operation was intended to instil public confidence in train catering services, and we plan to carry out more such surprise inspections going forward," he said. Krishna also appealed to the public to continue reporting such concerns.

Special focus was placed on IRCTC-operated kitchens and catering units functioning near key railway establishments in the state. In many locations, the inspections were carried out jointly with health department officials of the respective local bodies. In places where health officials were unavailable, Railway Police carried out the checks independently for visible violations, hygiene lapses, or illegalities that could endanger public health.
Inspecting officers checked for cleanliness in cooking areas, hygienic food handling practices, and the safe packaging of food items. Where necessary, directions were issued on improving sanitary conditions and adhering to food safety protocols.

The Israeli military published new evacuation warnings for areas of central Gaza on Sunday, in one of the few areas where the military has rarely operated with ground troops. The announcement comes as Israel and Hamas have been holding ceasefire talks in Qatar, but international mediators say there have been no breakthroughs. However, that death toll is likely to increase, said Abu Selmiyah. In southern Gaza, Nasser hospital said 17 Palestinians were killed and 69 wounded around aid distribution sites in the southern city of Rafah. Cutting off access The area of Gaza under the evacuation order is where many international organizations attempting to distribute aid are located. The United Nations has been in contact with the Israeli authorities to clarify whether U.N. facilities in southwestern Deir al-Balah are included in Sunday's evacuation order, according to a U.N. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The official said in previous instances U.N. facilities were spared from evacuation orders. The evacuation announcement reaches from a previously evacuated area all the way to the coast and will severely hamper movement for aid groups and civilians in Gaza. Military spokesman Avichay Adraee warned that the military will attack "with intensity" against militants. Humanitarian disaster grows On Sunday morning, ambulances in front of three major hospitals in Gaza sounded their alarms simultaneously in an urgent appeal to shed light on the hunger crisis in the territory. The health ministry posted pictures on social media of doctors holding paper signs about malnourished children and lack of medication. Zaher al-Wahidi, one of the spokespeople at the health ministry, said that at least nine children under 5 years old have died of malnutrition as of Sunday since the Israel's imposed aid entry blockade in March. He explained that tracking the number of people dying of starvation is hard because some could be suffering from other medical conditions that could be worsened when compounded with severe hunger. In northern Gaza, Shifa Hospital director Abu Selmiyah said that the hospital recorded 79 people who died of malnutrition in the past month. Erythritol is an organic compound, the naturally occurring achiral meso four-carbon sugar alcohol. It is the reduced form of either D- or L-erythrose and one of the two reduced forms of erythrulose. It is used as a food additive and sugar substitute. It is synthesized from corn using enzymes and fermentation. Created during the corn fermentation process, erythritol, an organic compound used for so-called "stevia" products sold by the brands Wholesome, Truvia, and Splenda, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration back in 2001. Since then, erythritol has been considered one of the best sweeteners on the market because of its near-sugar-level sweetness that barely affects insulin or blood sugar in diabetics. What are the alternatives? As erythritol is proving to be a 'sweet poison', it's better to opt for natural sweeteners as alternatives. Raw honey: Raw, unprocessed honey is packed with antioxidants, enzymes, and trace vitamins (B6, C), along with minerals such as zinc, iron, and potassium—much more nutritious than regular sugar. Mix into yogurt, herbal tea, homemade granola, or drizzle over pancakes. Use about ¾ cup of honey for every cup of sugar, but reduce the surrounding liquids and include a pinch of baking soda to balance the acidity. Pure maple syrup: Rich in antioxidants and essential minerals like manganese, zinc, and calcium, providing recipes with an appealing earthy sweetness. Replace ¾ cup of sugar with syrup, reducing about 3–4 tablespoons of liquid. Pour over oatmeal, toast, smoothies, or incorporate into marinades and dressings. Date syrup or date sugar: Made from whole dates, this sweetener is high in potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants, plus fiber that slows the absorption of sugar.
