MP: Congress leaders hold press conference, demand action against minister Vijay Shah

India Gazette25-05-2025

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 25 (ANI): In a press conference held in Bhopal, Congress leaders Arun Yadav, former Union Minister, and Arif Masood, Congress MLA, demanded action against Minister Vijay Shah for his comment on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, citing the BJP's inaction on the matter.
The Congress leaders demanded a fair and independent investigation into the matter under the supervision of the Supreme Court. 'We reiterate our demand for Vijay Shah's dismissal and a probe under the Supreme Court's supervision,' Arun Yadav said.
'I'm deeply disturbed by the recent statement made by Minister Vijay Shah, a seven-time lawmaker from Khandwa, targeting our brave Army officer Sofia Qureshi. The entire nation is ashamed of his actions, and it's shocking that it's been almost a month since the scandal broke out, yet no action has been taken against him. This raises serious questions about the governments of Madhya Pradesh and India, led by Narendra Modi. My colleague, Arif Masood, will provide more details on this matter,' he added.
This comes after Kunwar Vijay Shah stirred a row with his objectionable remark on Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who briefed the media about Operation Sindoor.
Speaking at an event, Shah had said, 'Those who widowed our daughters [in Pahalgam], we sent their sister to teach them a lesson.' The state minister later apologised, expressing regret over his remark, 'I am not a God; I'm too human, and I apologise ten times.'
The minister further said, 'I am a patriotic man, and people of every community worked for the nation. If something slipped out in anger and someone felt bad, I would like to say that I am not a god but a human being apologise ten times for it.'
Earlier, SP Dalit leader Awadhesh Prasad demanded the dismissal of Madhya Pradesh BJP Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah from the government over his remarks on Colonel Sofia, calling it an insult to the armed forces and the country's military history.
President Ajay Rai too slammed Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah over his objectionable remark on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi.
Calling Kunwar Vijay Shah's remark an insult to women, the army and the people of the country, Ajay Rai requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against the MP Cabinet Minister.
'The nation is saddened by Colonel Sofiya Qureshi's insult, who increased the nation's respect. Insult to her is an insult to the women, the army and the people of the country. I request PM Modi to take action against such a leader and suspend him immediately,' Ajay Rai said. (ANI)

After MP's ‘demand', Pune's Sarasbaug Garden closed by civic body

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Sunday kept the famous Sarasbaug garden in the heart of the city closed for the day, allegedly on the demand of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni, who cited that Bakri Eid celebrations in the garden would disturb the sanctity of a historical temple in the centre of garden. The PMC administration had closed the gate of Sarasbaug garden with a board on display saying the garden was closed for the day and eating food was not allowed here. The civic administration did not respond to calls seeking reasons for the garden's closure. In a communication to PMC on June 6, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kulkarni said, 'There is a Peshwa-era Ganesh temple in Sarasbaug and is a place of worship for lakhs of Hindu people. The garden is situated around the temple. It has been observed that people of Muslim community turn up in large numbers in Sarasbaug Garden and consume meat by violating garden rules. This hurts sentiments of Hindu community.' Various Hindu organisations have become aggressive towards the consumption of meat in the garden, she said, adding that they too had decided to hold a social event at Sarasbaug on June 8. 'There is a possibility of communal tension between the two communities if they come face to face. There seem to be truth in complaint by Hindu organisations as many people of the Muslim community come together and consume meat, which is spoiling the sanctity of temple. This can't be tolerated,' said Kulkarni. The BJP MP said, 'The PMC should keep the garden closed on Sunday and only allow temple visitors through the gate. This should be done to avoid any untoward incident that would disturb the peace. However, the temple should be kept open for the Hindu community.' Activist Anwar Sheikh has sought an explanation from the PMC on the exact reason why Sarasbaug Garden was closed. 'The decision to close Sarasbaug on the demand of an MP has violated the rights of the Muslim community. The PMC's decision to close the garden on the occasion of Bakri Eid is against the fundamental right of people of the Muslim community. If the people of the muslim community are paying tax to the PMC, then they have the right to use public spaces like gardens and parks. Keeping them out due to the demand of an MP goes against the values of democracy,' he said. He said that Muslims take their families to the garden the day after Eid to celebrate, but this year, Sarasbaug Garden was kept closed without giving any reason. Sheikh has urged the PMC to not take such decisions in future to avoid hurting feelings of any religious community, protect the rights of Muslims and not to fall prey to the pressure of elected representatives. 'The incident is sending a message that it was done to target only people of one community,' he said.

Rs 2,000 crore classroom ‘scam' case: Manish Sisodia says won't appear before ACB today

AAP leader Manish Sisodia, who was summoned for questioning by the Delhi Government's Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) Monday morning in connection with the alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore in the construction of classrooms in government schools when the party was in power, said he would not be able to do so. ACB officials said Sisodia conveyed through his counsel that he is preoccupied with other programmes, and will not be able to appear before them at 11 am. The Aam Aadmi Party leader's counsel also said he will file a reply via email. The officials said that once he sends his reply, they will see whether a summons will be issued again. The AAP also said in a statement, 'Manish Sisodia will not be going to ACB on Monday due to a pre-scheduled programme. His lawyer has sent a reply on his behalf'. ACB issued summonses to former AAP ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain on May 3 in connection with the case. Jain was questioned last Friday for over five hours. On April 30, ACB registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the two AAP leaders in connection with alleged corruption in the construction of 12,748 classrooms or semi-permanent structures during the previous AAP government's tenure. Sisodia held the finance and education portfolios in the AAP government, and Jain was the minister of health, industries, power, home, urban development, and the Public Works Department (PWD). Madhur Verma, Joint Commissioner of Police, who heads the ACB, earlier confirmed the FIR's registration. BJP leaders Kapil Mishra, Harish Khurana, and Neelkant Bakshi filed a complaint in 2019 alleging financial irregularities in the construction of classrooms in Delhi Government schools in three zones. They said the construction cost per room stood at approximately Rs 24.86 lakh, exponentially higher than the roughly Rs 5 lakh it takes for similar constructions in Delhi. The BJP leaders also alleged that the project was awarded to 34 contractors, most of whom were associated with the AAP. According to ACB officials, 12,748 semi-permanent structures were supposed to be built for Rs 1,200 per square feet, but the cost shot up to around Rs 2,292 per sq ft during construction. ACB is probing the cost escalation.

Jaishankar to step up diplomatic push on visit to France, Belgium

On his third visit to Europe in the past few months, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar left on Sunday (June 8, 2025) for a week-long visit to France and Belgium. He is expected to meet with his counterparts in both governments, and in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels. This visit is part of the government's efforts to step up its diplomatic engagement post Operation Sindoor to garner support for India's fight against terrorism. 'The visit of EAM is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing the visit from June 8 to 14. In March, Mr. Jaishankar had travelled to the U.K. and Ireland, and in May, he had visited the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. In France, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Paris for bilateral talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot, and to Marseille to address the 'Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue', a conference of the Ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is significant because Marseille is one of the European ports along with Trieste, Italy, and Piraeus, Greece that are in the running for the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) route, and although ambitions for the project launched in 2023 have been dimmed due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, New Delhi is keen to keep discussions on it alive. In Brussels, he will hold a 'Strategic Dialogue' with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the Ministry said. Mr. Jaishankar is also expected to raise India's request for the repatriation of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest pending a trial for extradition to India to face charges of fraud and embezzlement. Mr. Jaishankar will end his tour in time for the G-7 summit in Canada, although it is unclear whether he will attend. He is also scheduled to travel to Washington for the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in early July and could accompany PM Modi to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5-6.
