Egypt's Unemployment Rate Drops to 6.6%
Egypt's Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced Saturday the results of its annual labor force bulletin for 2024, which showed a decline in the annual unemployment rate to 6.6%, compared to 7% in 2023, a decrease of 0.4%.
This decline reflects an improvement in Egyptian labor market indicators despite growing economic challenges.
The data showed that the unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 29 years recorded 14.9 percent of the total labor force within the same age group, a decrease of 1% compared to the previous year. While the rate among males decreased to 9.8 percent, unemployment among females remained high at 37.1%. The 15-19 age group recorded an unemployment rate of 12.2%, compared to 12.4% in 2023. The 20-24 age group recorded 19.1%, compared to 20% the previous year. The 25-29 age group recorded a decrease in unemployment to 12.2%, compared to 14% in 2023.
As for those with intermediate and higher education qualifications, as well as university degrees and higher, the unemployment rate in the same age group (15-29 years) recorded 18.7% in 2024, compared to 20.3% in 2023, with a clear disparity between males and females. The rate among males decreased to 12.2%, compared to 13.3% the previous year, while among females it reached 40.8%, compared to 45.3% in 2023, reflecting the continuing gender gap in the labor market.
Egypt's labor force will reach approximately 32.041 million in 2024, compared to 31.149 million in 2023, an increase of 2.9%. This number is distributed among 26.080 million males and 5.961 million females.
The data also showed that the urban labor force reached 14.078 million individuals, while the rural population recorded 17.963 million individuals.
Regarding the number of unemployed, 2.113 million were unemployed in 2024, compared to 2.190 million in 2023, a decrease of 77,000 individuals, or 3.5 percent. The urban unemployment rate decreased to 9.6 percent, compared to 9.9 percent in 2023, and to 4.2 percent in rural areas, compared to 4.8 percent the previous year.
Unemployment rates varied between males and females, with the rate among urban males reaching 6.3% and among rural males reaching 2.6%. Meanwhile, among urban females, it recorded 21.8%, compared to 12.4% among rural females. This difference is attributed to women's participation in agricultural activities in rural areas. The data also showed that the percentage of previously employed unemployed individuals decreased to 42.3% of the total unemployed, compared to 45.3% in 2023.

Egypt launches first-ever bachelor's degree in banking sciences across commerce faculties
In a landmark step toward cultivating a new generation of banking professionals and accelerating financial and economic development, the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), in partnership with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Egyptian Banking Institute (EBI), has announced the launch of a Bachelor's degree in Banking Sciences. The programme will be introduced at several Egyptian universities starting in the 2025/2026 academic year. The announcement was made during an event held yesterday, attended by Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the CBE; Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research; Mostafa Refaat, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Universities; Hussein Issa, former President of Ain Shams University and Coordinator of the Presidential Specialized Council for Economic Development; Abdel Aziz Nosseir, Executive Director of the EBI; as well as presidents of universities, deans of commerce faculties, and senior figures from the banking sector. During the ceremony, a partnership agreement was signed between the EBI and participating universities to ensure effective coordination and guarantee the programme's success. The degree is designed to equip students with the specialised knowledge, hands-on skills, and ethical grounding required to excel in an increasingly dynamic banking landscape, particularly in light of rapid digital transformation and growing economic challenges. Hassan Abdalla described the initiative as 'a pioneering step to enhance the skills and talent within the banking sector.' He added: 'This programme will help prepare future leaders and highly qualified bankers, driven by our firm belief that empowering youth with global banking competencies is a strategic, long-term investment that will provide a strong boost to both the sector and national economic development.' The Governor noted that students will gain advanced skills in areas such as financial inclusion, digital banking, fintech, risk management, advanced regulatory frameworks, sustainable banking, and environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG). He emphasised that the programme's intensive practical training and case studies—conducted in collaboration with banks operating in the Egyptian market—will ensure graduates enter the workforce with both academic excellence and job-ready experience, enabling them to make immediate contributions to economic growth and financial stability. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education, stressed that the initiative reflects the shared vision of the Ministry and the CBE to deliver modern academic programmes aligned with labour market demands. He pointed out that this is the first such programme developed jointly by the Ministry and the CBE, featuring specialised curricula, innovative teaching methods, and extensive training opportunities in banks. Initially launching in select universities, the programme is planned for gradual expansion in the coming years. He expressed confidence that it will significantly enhance the skills of graduates in the banking field, strengthening their role in national economic progress. Ashour further explained that the Bachelor of Banking Sciences aims to train students passionate about financial and banking services, preparing them to play an active role in Egypt's development journey. This specialised degree—awarded by universities and institutes following high school—aligns with the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research and is a key step toward integrating efforts across state institutions to prepare students for professional success. From the perspective of the Supreme Council of Universities, Secretary-General Mostafa Refaat underlined the importance of aligning academic content with Egypt's Vision 2030 and the future needs of the labour market. He noted that, on 31 May 2025, the Council approved unified academic regulations for a new Bachelor of Commerce specialising in Banking Sciences. The credit-hour programme, to be taught in English, will be offered in commerce faculties at Egyptian universities. Refaat added that the curriculum integrates academic study with practical training in banks and financial institutions, while also offering accredited professional certificates alongside the graduation degree—further improving graduates' employability. Abdel Aziz Nosseir, Executive Director of the EBI, expressed pride in the collaboration, describing the Bachelor of Banking Sciences as 'a genuine response to the evolving needs of the banking job market.' He stated: 'At the EBI, we believe that building future banking leaders starts with providing specialised education that fuses theory and practice, enriched by the latest banking technologies and methodologies. The practical component will be delivered by banking sector experts alongside distinguished faculty members from participating universities.' Designed to keep pace with digital transformation, the programme embeds the latest technological trends into its curricula, fosters ethical and responsible banking practices, and champions sustainable financial solutions. Through this integrated approach, it aims to prepare a new generation of bankers ready to shape the future of Egypt's banking industry.

Egypt, Russia discuss localising electrical systems, equipment manufacturing
Egypt's Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat met with Alexei Kononenko, Vice President of AtomAstroyExport and Project Manager of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Station, along with his accompanying delegation, to discuss strengthening cooperation, enhancing coordination, and advancing joint efforts to increase the share of locally manufactured components in joint projects. The talks focused on transferring and localising selected industries that supply equipment for nuclear power plants—industries already engaged in projects across several countries in the Middle East. Discussions also reviewed the latest progress in executing the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, confirming that works are proceeding according to the approved schedule and timelines. Attention was given to the role of manufacturing departments as vital facilities within the project, including the production of components for the reactor building's inner containment vessel—a key technical and engineering element of this strategic national undertaking. The meeting highlighted ongoing local manufacturing of several major components, including the cooling system connections, which are now produced entirely in Egypt. Egyptian workers currently make up around 80% of the total workforce on the project, reflecting sustained efforts to enhance domestic participation. Officials also explored new areas of cooperation with entities such as the Arab Organization for Industrialization to further expand the localisation of industry and the domestic production of electrical equipment. The talks addressed steps already taken to localise the manufacturing of a range of electrical systems, equipment, and components, as well as ways to expand training programmes to prepare the workforce required for plant operations. These training initiatives are being implemented both domestically and abroad. The meeting concluded with an outline of measures to be taken under the framework of ongoing Egyptian–Russian coordination, with close cooperation between on-site teams. Progress reviews and future requirements were discussed, reaffirming the shared commitment to completing the strategic project in line with agreed plans and schedules. Preparations are also under way for the installation of the turbine generator for the first nuclear unit, which is expected to arrive at the El Dabaa site before the end of this year. Minister Essmat stressed that there are presidential directives to intensify efforts to transfer technology and localise the manufacturing of electrical systems, equipment, and components as part of Egypt's peaceful nuclear energy programme for electricity generation. He noted that Egypt has many qualified entities capable of contributing to this field, highlighting the ongoing partnership and coordination with the Russian side. He further confirmed that implementation of the El Dabaa project is progressing as planned, with continuous follow-up and strong commitment from all parties in Egypt, Russia, and participating international companies to adhere to the project's timetable, complete its various phases, and connect the plant to the national grid on schedule. Essmat underscored the special significance of the El Dabaa plant within Egypt's peaceful nuclear energy programme and its alignment with the national energy strategy. This strategy emphasises an energy mix that diversifies electricity generation sources, expands reliance on new, renewable, and clean energy, and reduces fuel consumption.
