Widow, children of kabaddi player awarded ₹34-lakh relief
In the order, tribunal's presiding officer Atul Kasana directed Gurpreet Singh of Sangrur, who was booked for the car crash on May 29 last year, and the National Insurance Company Limited to pay ₹34,07,100 to the family.
'The accident took place due to rash and negligent driving of car bearing registration number PB-01-D-9402 by Gurpreet Singh. A perusal of the insurance policy proved on record that the said vehicle was insured with the company at the time of the accident. Therefore, both the respondents are held liable to pay the compensation to the claimants,' the order read.
It further mentioned that the respondent number 2 (insurance firm) is liable to indemnify the insured — respondent number 1 (accused) — and as such, liable to make payment of compensation awarded.
Parmeet Kaur, 36, widow of Paramjit Singh, along with his daughter Gurbani Kaur, 9, and three-year-old son Sarover Singh, all residents of Sohana village, Mohali, had filed the claim against Gurpreet Singh and the insurance company, seeking ₹1 crore.
The tribunal ordered the respondents to pay 50% of the total compensation to Parmeet Kaur and 25% each to Gurbani Kaur and Sarover Singh.
As per case files, the mishap took place on May 29, 2024, when Parmeet Kaur, Paramjit Singh and his brother Karamjit Singh were out to attend a family function.
While returning, Pamma's friend sat in the Mahindra Scorpio car that was being driven by the former. Pamma's wife along with kids sat in the car of her brother-in-law.
Near Amity School Chowk of Sector 79, Mohali, when Pamma was about to cross the road, the accused in a Honda Amaze car came from Chandigarh side in a 'rash and negligent manner' and struck the car of the deceased around 10.45 pm, resulting in Pamma's death. Gurpreet had allegedly fled at that time.
The Sohana police had slapped Sections 304-A, 279 and 427 of the IPC on hims.
The claimants averred that at the time of accident, the deceased was 34 years old. The deceased was to participate in the World Kabbadi Cup in Canada in June 2024.

'The property is located at Bandi Payeen, district action has been taken in connection with FIR No. 107/2020, registered at Police Station Parimpora, under Sections 124A, 153A, 295A IPC and Sections 13, 18 & 38 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act - UAPA. Proceedings were initiated under Section 25 of the UAPA, which empowers authorities to attach property used or intended to be used for terrorist activities. The attachment was carried out in the presence of the concerned Executive Magistrate,' the spokesman said. Police said that the property is formally held in the name of his father, Mohammad Maqbool Dar of Bandi Payeen, Baramulla, presently residing at HIG Colony, Bemina, investigations have established that Asif Maqbool Dar is an active stakeholder. Dept inquiry gives clean chit to CBI judge suspended on corruption charges
Chandigarh: In a major respite to suspended special CBI Judge Sudhir Parmar -- who was arrested by (ED) in connection with alleged bribery and favouritism in a Rs 400 crore money-laundering scam involving real estate developers -- a departmental committee has given him the clean chit in the case. Judge Parmar was facing charges of alleged misconduct, involving abuse of his position to benefit the accused in ED and CBI cases under his jurisdiction. Highly placed sources in the high court administration confirmed to TOI that Nirbhow Singh Gill, Jalandhar district and sessions judge, who was appointed the enquiry officer by Vigilance Disciplinary Committee (VDC) of the HC administration, did not find much against Parmar. The report of the enquiry officer has already been submitted to HC. Now, it will be considered by VDC before being finally taken up before the full court for a final decision. The regular departmental enquiry against Parmar was handed over to Gill on Oct 3, 2024, by VDC. While Gill was the enquiry officer, Dharminder Paul Singla, additional district judge, Jalandhar, was the presenting officer. On Oct 19, 2024, both officers started the enquiry, examining several witnesses and evidence related to the controversy. The proceedings were conducted in accordance with Haryana Civil Services (Punishment & Appeal) Rules, 2016. The rules, however, provide that the inquiry report is submitted before the disciplinary/punishing authority, which is obliged to take action after supplying a copy of the report to the accused employee. Once the order of exoneration or penalty is imposed, disciplinary proceedings come to an end. The clean chit to Parmar, if accepted by HC administration, would also come as a setback to Haryana state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau that first reported to the high court administration about the alleged involvement of Parmar, who was then posted as special judge-Panchkula and hearing high-profile cases related to CBI and ED. Parmar also remained behind bars from Aug 10, 2023, to Nov 2, 2023, after ED arrested him in connection with this case. ED claimed that its investigation revealed that Parmar, then posted as special judge for CBI and ED cases at Panchkula, was showing favouritism to some accused persons. The suspended judge's brother, Ajay Parmar, was also arrested by the central agency in this matter. The allegations against Parmar had come as a rude shock in judicial circles, as he was considered an upright officer of Haryana Superior Judicial Services. He was appointed as special CBI judge-Panchkula after clearance of his record / antecedents by several agencies. According to the schedule released by the ECI, the earlier voter list will be published on September 2. The poll panel has invited claims and objections from the voters from September 2 to 17. The claims and objection will be disposed of on September 25. The final electoral rolls for the constituency will be published on September 30. Abbas is the son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari who died last year. The Special MP/MLA court had convicted and sentenced Ansari to two years' imprisonment each under IPC sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506 and six months imprisonment under section 171-F. The court ordered that all the sentences will run simultaneously. According to a notification issued by the UP legislative assembly on June 1, Mau Sadar MLA Abbas Ansari is disqualified from May 31, 2025 as per Election Commission of India letter no. 509/Gen/2015/RCC, dated 13.10.2015 and order dated July 10, 2013 passed by the Supreme Court.
