Canada's Duer expands globally with European launch

Canadian performance apparel brand Duer is expanding into Europe.
Through a strategic partnership with Hectic Europe, Duer has established a presence in 12 countries including the UK, Germany, France, and the Nordics.
The collaboration leverages Hectic's distribution network, local market knowledge, and warehousing capabilities, allowing Duer to scale its operations across the continent. European customers now have direct access to the brand through dedicated e-commerce platforms, shopduer.eu and shopduer.co.uk.
'Ten years ago, I set out to create clothing for people who wanted the comfort and performance and versatility of athleisure, but in an entirely different form,' said Gary Lenett, founder of Duer.
'Not gym wear and not traditional jeanswear, but something in between, made using natural fabrics like denim that balance both style and function. The response from customers confirmed what I believed from the start: people don't want to wear gym clothes beyond the gym if they have a stylish alternative built to move through every part of their lives.'
Coinciding with the launch, Duer also unveiled plans to continue to scale its retail presence in North America, with new branded stores opening in Victoria, Portland, and San Francisco.
These additions build on a retail strategy that already includes a network of 800 partner retailers worldwide and a growing fleet of standalone locations, which the brand has established since launching in 2015.
'While we see great opportunities internationally with Hectic, we are equally focused on strengthening our brand here in North America,' added Lenett. 'This next phase of growth is about showing up where our customers already are, starting with three new stores opening across the Pacific Northwest.'

Critics cite Amazon's labour practices, ongoing tax disputes with European governments and Bezos' political associates as reasons for concern. The city's governor Luca Zaia has strongly defended the wedding as an economic and reputation boon for Venice, saying the price tag he had seen was between €40 million and €48 million. Bezos donated 1 million each to three environmental research organisations working to preserve Venice, according to Corila, the Venetian environmental research association.

President Donald Trump said on Friday, June 27, that he is calling off trade negotiations with Canada in retaliation for taxes impacting US tech firms, adding that Ottawa will learn of their new tariff rate within a week. Trump was referring to Canada's digital services tax, which was enacted last year and forecast to bring in Can$5.9 billion (US4.2 billion) over five years. While the measure is not new, US service providers will be "on the hook for a multi-billion dollar payment in Canada" come June 30, noted the Computer & Communications Industry Association recently. The 3% tax applies to large or multinational companies such as Alphabet, Amazon and Meta that provide digital services to Canadians, and Washington has previously requested dispute settlement talks over the matter. "Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform Friday. He called the country "very difficult" to trade with. Canada may have been spared some of Trump's most sweeping duties, such as a 10% levy on nearly all US trading partners, but it faces a separate tariff regime. Trump has also imposed steep levies on imports of steel, aluminum and autos. Last week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa will adjust its 25% counter tariffs on US steel and aluminum − in response to a doubling of US levies on the metals to 50% − if a bilateral trade deal was not reached in 30 days. "We will continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interest of Canadians," Carney said Friday, adding that he had not spoken to Trump following the US president's announcement.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he's immediately suspending trade talks with Canada over its plans to continue with its tax on technology firms, which he called "a direct and blatant attack on our country." Trump, in a post on his social media network Truth Social, said that the Canadians had just informed the US that it was sticking to its plan to impose the tax which is set to take effect Monday. "Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately," Trump posted. "We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period." The digital services tax applies to Canadian and foreign businesses that engage with online users in Canada. It will apply to companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb with a 3% levy on revenue from Canadian users. It will apply retroactively, leaving US companies with a $2 billion (€1.7 billion) bill due at the end of the month.
