Asylum seekers who work illegally should be on ‘next plane home'
Migrants whose asylum claims are yet to be processed are not generally allowed to work but they can apply for permission to work if they have been waiting a year or longer for a decision.
The Home Office last month struck an agreement with Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats to equip these companies with tools to identify patterns of misuse and riders who are not allowed to work in the UK.
The Government will share the locations of asylum hotels as part of the deal.
But the Conservatives have called for illegal working to become a disqualifier in the asylum process, so that anyone caught is barred from becoming a refugee.
'If you come here illegally, take advantage of our asylum system, and then break our laws by illegally working, your asylum claim must be rejected and you should be on the next plane home,' Mrs Badenoch said.
'Under my leadership, the Conservatives will never allow Britain to become a soft touch for those who think they can break the rules and profit from it.'
She also said that illegal working 'rewards illegality, protects perpetrators and mocks hard-working taxpayers.'
Mr Philp said he had seen riders gathering at a hotel housing asylum seekers, which he described as 'an underground courier cartel operating right under this Government's nose'.
He continued: 'Illegal working is a pull factor sold by smugglers as a reward to break in to our country and cross the Channel.
'That is why we are calling for new action: anyone who plays the system should have their status stripped, wages confiscated, and be deported.'
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has previously said that 'illegal working undermines honest business, exploits vulnerable individuals and fuels organised immigration crime'.
She described the Home Office's data-sharing deal as 'decisive action to close loopholes and increase enforcement', and added it sat alongside 'a 50% increase in raids and arrests for illegal working'.

And warning sport lovers to steer clear of deals that "look too good to be true" she said: 'Social media is the main breeding ground for ticket scams and it's time these firms cracked down on the fraudsters lurking on their platforms." Analysis found supporters aged from 25 to 34 are the most common victims, making up 28% of all cases. They were closely followed by 18 to 24 year olds. Lloyds is working with the Home Office on its Stop! Think Fraud project, aimed at stopping people falling victim to scammers. The Premier League urges supporters to buy tickets directly from clubs. Several clubs employ staff dedicated to tackling ticket fraud, who will often buy tickets from unauthorised sellers to identify the source of resold tickets. From season 2026/27 the Premier League will require a minimum of 70% of tickets to be digital. It says this will give additional security. Lord Hanson said: 'Fraud is a ruthless crime that preys on our passions, our trust, and our excitement. As the nation gears up for the new football season, so too do fraudsters, waiting to take advantage of loyal fans searching for tickets."

First people to be returned to France under UK's ‘one in, one out' asylum deal
People who arrived in the UK on a small boat have been detained under Keir Starmer's 'one in, one out' deal for the first time and are expected to be returned to France within three weeks, the Home Office has said. Detentions began on Wednesday lunchtime as those identified in the Channel were held in immigration removal centres pending their removal. The UK would be expected to make referrals to France within three days, and the French authorities would be expected to respond within 14 days, officials said. A small proportion of people arriving on small boats will be selected for removal to France and, in return, Britain will accept an equal number of asylum seekers from France. The Home Office released footage of a group of men who were being assessed for possible removal. With their faces blurred, they were shown walking into a tent for medical assessment. A second film showed them being screened by Border Force staff. Questions remain over the treaty implementing the 'one in, one out' agreement. Immigration lawyers say its confusingly worded terms could be challenged by anyone attempting to block their return to France. The charity that successfully challenged the previous government's Rwanda plan said it was now examining whether it could launch a case against Labour's 'morally repugnant' policy. Steve Smith, the CEO of Care4Calais, said: 'Channel crossings are driven by a lack of safe routes, and here we have the government claiming to be opening a very limited, safe route, but they are locking people up before it's opened. These first detainees are being denied access to justice. 'Lets be clear, however. This grubby deal is all about permanently denying people the right to sanctuary. Offering a safe route to one person who has a strong case to be offered protection, while denying somebody else, who may have an equally strong case, is abhorrent. It must be challenged, and we are keeping all our options open to do so.' The reciprocal scheme allowing asylum seekers with links to the UK has also begun. Applicants must satisfy the eligibility and suitability criteria, including uploading a passport or other identity documents as well as a recent photograph. Those selected will have to pass further stringent security checks and biometric controls, meaning that only those individuals whom the UK government has approved for entry will be allowed through the new route. People from war-torn and drought-hit countries such as Eritrea could be excluded from the scheme by the requirement for official documents, a charity has warned. A Refugee Legal Support spokesperson said: 'This week in Calais, we spoke with many people from Eritrea and almost none of them have copies of their Eritrean passports because they were never able to obtain one. Eritrean nationals are the top nationality crossing the Channel in 2025; 86% of Eritrean asylum seekers receive a positive decision, but almost all will be excluded from this scheme.' As the one-in, one-out pilot scheme continues into its implementation phase, the Home Office is also launching a campaign warning people not to risk their money or their life, to be promoted in the coming days across multiple channels. The deal has been trumpeted by ministers as a 'gamechanging' deal but Home Office sources said it would apply only to about 50 asylum seekers at first. Yvette Cooper, the home secretary, did not confirm how many people were being prepared to be returned to France and said the government would resist any legal challenges. 'The transfers to immigration removal centres are under way as we speak, so we won't provide operational details at this point that criminal gangs can simply use and exploit. 'But no one should be in any doubt: anyone who arrives from now on is eligible for immediate detention and return,' she said. 'It's the beginning of the pilot and it will build as well over time, but we're also clear that France is a safe country, so we will robustly defend against any legal challenge that people try.' A copy of the agreement was released on Tuesday as the prime minister comes under increasing pressure to stop boats carrying asylum seekers from crossing the Channel. The UK will pay the costs of transporting asylum seekers to and from France. The deal will have to be renewed by 11 June next year, and can be ended at a month's notice by either side. If people have an outstanding claim for asylum, they cannot be removed, the deal says. France can reject a requested removal if it 'considers that an individual would be a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or the international relations of any of the Schengen states'. So far in 2025, more than 25,000 people have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in small boats – a record for this point in the year since data began being collected in 2018. That is up 48% on the same time last year.

Writing on X, he added: 'No gimmicks, just results.' Home Secretary Yvette Cooper also appeared to overstate the likely impact of her scheme, claiming that 'every migrant' will be 'throwing away their money if they get into a small boat'. The Home Office refused to disclose how many Channel migrants had been held yesterday. But any efforts to send them back to France are likely to lead to human rights claims and other legal actions which could delay removals for months, or longer. The Anglo-French agreement will expire in ten months' time, with any renewal then in doubt as the next French presidential election campaign will, by then, be gathering pace. He said the Government's scheme would 'get bogged down in an endless legal quagmire' because 'any migrants claiming to be under 18, or who make a modern slavery or human rights claim, will not get removed'. Former Tory Cabinet minister Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg said the Anglo-French deal was a 'complete waste of time'. 'It's a fake. It's a phony, it's a cheat on the British people,' he told GB News. 'It's a bogus deal, it's a complete waste of time.' He said the arrangement for those making human rights claims was an 'extraordinary loophole that means almost no one can be deported'. The first Channel migrants to be selected for removal to France were filmed arriving at a detention centre yesterday after being processed at the former RAF Manston air base in Kent. Video clips released by the Home Office showed men in grey tracksuits disembarking from a van. Later, up to six men – whose faces are obscured – are seen sitting in a corridor of the removal centre. They were among 155 who reached Britain on Wednesday, taking the total for the year to 25,591, up 45 per cent on the same point last year. Those not selected for removal will be taken on to taxpayer-funded asylum hotels. The Daily Mail understands that pro-migrant groups have already begun informal discussions about launching a joint legal action against Labour's plan – just as they did against the Conservatives' Rwanda asylum scheme.
