The cause is carbon monoxide poisoning and his death is initially thought to be a case of suicide. But the police are not convinced, so they knock on the door of the woman Oide had been dating, 35-year-old Kanae Kijima. This marks the beginning of the investigation into what would become known in the media as the 'Konkatsu killer' case. The name derives from konkatsu , meaning marriage hunting.
The investigation uncovered evidence that suggested Kijima had killed three men she met on dating sites. The three deaths were initially considered suicides but were all deemed to have been staged. The court agreed and Kijima – who has always maintained her innocence – was found guilty in 2012, based largely on what was widely held to be circumstantial evidence. She was sentenced to death. The decision was upheld in subsequent appeals, and she is now on death row awaiting execution.
Kijima's case was similar to that of Chisako Kakehi, who died in prison on December 26, 2024, while under sentence of death. She had been found guilty of murder and fraud and given the death penalty after a court found she had entrapped and swindled money from three men (including her husband) before killing them using cyanide.
But there was also a distinct aspect to Kijima's case. From the start many media outlets focused on the defendant's appearance rather than the heinous nature of the crime. Popular forums, newspapers and magazines buzzed with variations on the same question: How could a woman described as 'ugly and fat' manage to attract these men?
There was speculation that her success lay in her 'homely' qualities – the stereotype of chubby women being that they are cheerful, nurturing – and excellent cooks. It was suggested that men might prefer such a woman's warmth and hospitality over a stylish woman's 'air of superiority.'
In Japan, somebody sentenced to death tends to disappear from the public eye. But Kijima maintained a blog where she detailed her life and relationships – and continued to post entries there during and after the trial, probably through her lawyers. She still publishes on various issues: from the kind of cookies available in the detention house to the conditions on death row, from dietary advice to reflection on the lay judge experiment in Japanese criminal procedure.
The media eagerly mined her posts to reinforce stereotypes about gender roles and appearance, but Kijima pushed back. She has sharply criticised the focus on her looks and gender over the legal evidence, using her reflections to spotlight these biases. Novelist Asako Yuzuki took inspiration from Kijima's case to create a fictional narrative for her novel Butter. It's a story in which a journalist covering the story of a woman murderer is sucked into her swirling obsession with butter and indulgent food, exposing fat-phobia and sexism in Japanese society.
Kijima, who has published a memoir and a novel of her own, posted on her blog to express her deep discontent with the publication of the novel: 'What Yuzuki and the publisher are doing is nothing short of theft. If they interfere with external communication rights, they are not just thieves but complicit in murder. They continue to use my name without permission … I truly think it's a vulgar book.'
But, when I interviewed her, author Yuzuki insisted that, more than the details of the crime, she was interested in the implications of Kijima's case, in how the Japanese media often sensationalize stories.
Japanese media … often reflect the perspective of powerful men.… This realization was a turning point for me. Until then, I hadn't really questioned much or paid close attention to politics or media bias. But when it came to something I love – cooking – it struck a nerve.
In her book, Yuzuki questions some deep-seated Japanese stereotypes – particularly around women and cooking. She says that the concept of 'marriage hunting' is still popular in Japan, and women who love cooking are often labelled as 'domestic' or 'obedient.'
But, in her experience, someone passionate about cooking is far from submissive. On the contrary, cooking is powerful, and a woman skilled in the kitchen could just as easily harm someone as she could nourish them. 'There's a fine line between nurturing and dangerous precision,' she told me.
Social media have become a powerful tool for activists and writers like Yuzuki to connect with others and amplify their voices. She has joined other authors in advocating for marginalised groups, including sexual minorities, highlighting the intersectionality of issues such as gender, class, and criminal justice.
The Kijima case – through the facts, through Kijima's blog posts from prison and through the work of writers including Yuzuki – invites a deep reflection on the weight of societal expectations regarding gender and appearance. Beyond the question of guilt or innocence, it illustrates how female criminals are judged not only for their actions but for defying norms of femininity.
This dual scrutiny aligns with historical biases in Japan, where women who challenge societal norms are often framed as dangerous outliers. Kijima's portrayal as an unconventional femme fatale evokes the 19th-century trope of 'poison women' – dofuku . This casts women as destructive forces who upend the lives of those around them.
The severity of Kijima's punishment — the death penalty was used not at all in 2023 and only once in 2022 — seems designed to deliver exemplary justice. In the minds of many Japanese people she was guilty not only of murder but of manipulating societal expectations of femininity while failing to conform to conventional standards of beauty and behavior.
The case has reinforced the narrative that her transgressions extended beyond the courtroom and into the realm of societal betrayal.

US bank Wells Fargo employee blocked from leaving China: reports
US bank Wells Fargo told AFP Friday it was working to help one of its employees return to the United States, after reports they had been barred from leaving China. Multiple media outlets reported earlier Friday that the employee involved was Chenyue Mao, an Atlanta-based managing director who was born in Shanghai. Mao had entered the country in recent weeks but is now unable to leave, they said. 'We are closely tracking this situation and working through the appropriate channels so our employee can return to the United States as soon as possible,' the company told AFP when asked to confirm the reports. Beijing's foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said he was 'not familiar' with the specific case when asked about it at a news conference on Friday. 'China is a country governed by the rule of law. Whether a person is Chinese or foreign, in China both must respect China's laws,' Lin added. Global firms have faced an increasingly difficult business environment in China in recent years, industry groups say, citing a lack of transparency on data laws and prolonged detentions of employees in the country. A court in China sentenced a Japanese businessman from pharmaceutical company Astellas to three-and-a-half years in prison on Wednesday for spying. Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca in November said that the head of its China operations Leon Wang had been detained, after reports the firm was under investigation for potentially illegal data collection and drug imports. And in 2023 a senior executive at US risk advisory firm Kroll was prohibited from leaving China, the Wall Street Journal reported.

China jails Japanese national for 3.5 years for espionage, embassy says
A court in China sentenced a Japanese businessman to three-and-a-half years in prison on Wednesday for spying, Tokyo's ambassador in Beijing said. The man, an employee of the Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas, was detained in March 2023 and placed under formal arrest in October. He was 'sentenced to three years and six months in prison for espionage activities', Kenji Kanasugi, Japanese ambassador to China, told Japanese media after the trial in Beijing. 'It is extremely regrettable that such a guilty verdict was issued,' he said. A foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing said China's judicial organs 'handle cases in strict accordance with the law'. 'As long as foreign personnel in China and coming to China abide by the law… there is nothing to be worried or anxious about,' spokesman Lin Jian told a regular news conference when asked about the Japanese businessman's case. Five Japanese nationals, including the Astellas official, are in custody or serving prison terms in China, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK. Tokyo has repeatedly called on Beijing to release them and Wednesday's sentence deals a blow to ties, long frayed over territorial disputes, Japan's colonial history and other flashpoints. 'In light of the sentence, we have once again strongly urged the Chinese side for the early release of the Japanese national concerned in this case as well as others detained,' Tokyo's embassy in Beijing said in a statement. It also urged China 'to ensure their legitimate rights and humane treatment during detention, and to improve the transparency of the judicial process'. Beijing's foreign ministry said it would provide Japan the ability to 'perform consular duties'. The detained man had reportedly worked in China for two decades and was previously a senior executive at a major Japanese business lobby in the country. He was planning to return home before his sudden detention, according to Japan's Kyodo News Agency.

China's crackdown on gay erotica stifles rare outlet for LGBTQ expression
Chinese women who publish homoerotica online say they are being threatened with fines and jail time, as increasing enforcement of vague obscenity charges targets a rare space for LGBTQ identity and feminism. In recent months, Chinese police have detained dozens of writers on Haitang Literature City, a Taiwan-based website known for publishing serialised Boys' Love, a genre of erotic fiction mainly written and read by heterosexual women. Originating as a strand of Japanese manga comics in the 1960s known as 'yaoi', the genre has attracted a cult following in Asia and beyond, leading to popular screen adaptations and web series. The stories defy social stereotypes about the roles of men and women, a 22-year-old writer who asked to go by the pseudonym Miu Miu, told AFP. 'It's a kind of resistance… resisting a male-dominated society,' she said. The latest crackdown ensnared mostly amateur writers who earned little to nothing for their work. Under Chinese law, profiting from 'spreading obscene content' can lead to fines and prison. 'Serious' instances can carry jail terms of up to a decade. The obscenity law applies when someone's work gets at least 10,000 clicks or is 'used' to collect fees exceeding 10,000 yuan (nearly $1,400). While the law excludes 'artistic works or works of artistic value', that distinction is usually left to police. 'The general public's attitude towards sex is no longer the same as it was 30 or 40 years ago,' the lawyer added. One author phoned by police earned 2,000 yuan for two books with a total of 72 chapters that, combined, drew around 100,000 clicks. 'Are there really 100,000 people who have seen my work like they said? Are they really going to sentence me to three to five years?' the author wrote on Weibo. 'Don't they know how precious three to five years of life are?' Censors without borders The investigations have also renewed criticism of a practice known as 'distant water fishing', cross-provincial policing by cash-strapped local governments. The profit-driven enforcement typically involves authorities travelling to another jurisdiction and seizing a suspect's assets. In one case, a policeman from northwestern Lanzhou travelled 2,000 kilometres (more than 1,200 miles) to investigate a writer in her coastal hometown. She was driven to the police station and questioned for hours about her writing. She is currently on bail but could face criminal charges, which would disqualify her from taking China's civil service exam and positions in some hospitals and schools. Another 20-year-old author received a police summons which prompted her to travel hundreds of miles from the city of Chongqing to Lanzhou. On arrival police urged her to 'return the illegal income' she had earned from her writing to reduce her sentence. 'It's a very dirty practice,' said the lawyer, noting the central government in Beijing has issued several directives against it. 'Social awakening' Activists see the crackdown on alleged obscenity as part of a wider push to suppress LGBTQ expression — an effort that has expanded under President Xi Jinping. Embed from Getty Images China classified homosexuality as a crime until 1997 and a mental illness until 2001. Same-sex marriage is not legal and discrimination remains widespread. The Boys' Love genre — often lightly erotic but sometimes overtly explicit — has become increasingly censored as its popularity has boomed. Television adaptations have rewritten male lovers as friends, as same-sex relationships are banned from the screen. In 2018, a writer known by her pseudonym Tianyi was sentenced to over a decade in prison for earning $21,000 from a homoerotic novel about a teacher and his student. Last year, a court in Anhui province heard 12 cases involving spreading obscene content for profit, according to public records which do not give outcomes of the trials. Many in China 'feel less and less space to express themselves freely', said Ge, the lecturer and a longtime reader of Boys' Love. 'It's not just about posting something on social media, it's about reading something in their private life.' As news of the crackdown spread, Haitang users rushed to cancel their accounts. But writer Miu Miu said she has not given up hope she might be able to finish her favourite stories. 'Sexual knowledge has become taboo,' she said. 'This is a social awakening.'
