Kinoshi admits Red Giants not in great shape

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi has raised concerns over his team's lack of sharpness ahead of their Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Aug 8.
The Japanese said not all of his players are showing the intensity required.
He added that some are still struggling to meet the standards required as the new M-League season looms.
Kinoshi also expressed his unease about the fixtures, which see Selangor play in the Sultan of Selangor's Cup at Merdeka Stadium on Sept 27, on the day they are scheduled to meet Melaka in a Super League match at MBPJ Stadium. The tie is now marked "to be confirmed (TBC)".
"I don't know the situation at the end of September. Even if I have any complaints, I can't change it. I just have to accept the competition as well. It's okay."
Kinoshi, 61, said his players must take full ownership of their preparation for the new season.

Rising star Yamashita's AIG Women's Open win highlights dominant era for Japan in women's golf

Miyu Yamashita's victory at the AIG Women's Open makes her the fourth Japanese player to win a Major championship in the last two years. -- The R&A via Getty Images / LPGA PORTHCAWL, Mid Glamorgan, Wales: Miyu Yamashita's impressive victory at the AIG Women's Open reinforced Japan's emergence over the last few years as the pre-eminent force in women's golf. Yamashita's cool and composed two-shot triumph at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club made her the fourth Japanese player to win a Major championship in the last two years and the sixth overall, joining Mao Saigo (2025 Chevron Championship), Ayaka Furue (2024 Amundi Evian Championship), Yuka Saso (2024 US Women's Open), Hinako Shibuno (2019 AIG Women's Open) and the pioneering Hisako 'Chako' Higuchi (1977 LPGA Championship). With Saigo's Chevron Championship victory, Rio Takeda's triumph at the Blue Bay LPGA and Chisato Iwai claiming the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba title, Yamashita is the fourth Japanese winner on the 2025 LPGA Tour. The in-depth strength of women's golf is highlighted by the fact that Yamashita is the tour's ninth Rolex First-Time winner of 2025 and the 21st different champion. The 24-year-old is also the second player this season to make a Major championship their first victory, following Saigo. Following the AIG Women's Open, Yamashita overtook Takeda at the top of the 2025 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year rankings. Amazingly, the third and fourth-placed players in the rankings are also Japanese – Iwai and her twin sister, Akie. 'To have so many Japanese players doing so well at the moment is something that provides motivation for me and keeps me going. So great to see Saigo win earlier this year and that just kind of pushed me a little bit harder. "To join that elite group is something that's very special, and it's an amazing feeling,' said Yamashita, who has won 13 times on the Japan LPGA Tour and she was its leading money winner in 2022 and 2023. The LPGA Tour takes a one-week break before heading back to the United States for The Standard Portland Classic at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Oregon (August 14-17), where Thailand's Moriya Jutanugarn will seek to defend her title. - LPGA

Melaka FC aims high in Super League despite RM6 million budget

MELAKA FC owner Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad remains optimistic about his team's Super League prospects despite operating on a budget of under RM6 million. He said the club's unified salary structure is a core strength, ensuring player confidence and preventing wage issues. 'Salary issues won't arise as we have a clear payment plan, and players have agreed to the terms,' he said. Players are paid twice monthly, with some receiving early disbursements even before signing full contracts. This dependable system has attracted experienced players, including former national team members. Nur Azmi made the remarks during the launch of Melaka FC's 2025 home (red) and away (light blue) kits, officiated by Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam. The club has retained K. Devan as head coach and manager, relying on his leadership to steer the squad. Despite financial constraints, Nur Azmi believes the team can challenge stronger sides. 'A top-six finish would be an achievement given the Super League's tough competition,' he said. The squad features former national and U-23 players, as well as Grade C and D imports brought in through foreign club partnerships. These collaborations allow for player replacements if performance expectations are not met. – Bernama

By One Martin for the other - JDT's new winger Teto could fill in nicely for Juan

PETALING JAYA: Young Spanish winger Alberto Martin Diaz could be the perfect replacement for Johor Darul Ta'zim's (JDT) outgoing seasoned campaigner Juan Martin. The 23-year-old, who goes by the more familiar name of Teto Martin, will be joining the Southern Tigers for the upcoming Super League season. The youngster will give JDT head coach Xisco Munoz more tactical options, especially on the flanks with the departure of Martin. Martin, 33, said goodbye to JDT after his contract ended, bidding farewell to a club he had called home for the past three years and won multiple trophies with. Soon to be wearing the No. 20 jersey, Teto primarily plays on the right wing, but his versatility will allow him to play on the left or even in other attacking positions. Born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Teto spent his footballing career with CD Tenerife. He made his debut for the team's reserve squad four years ago, scoring in their win over Atletico Union Guimar in the Spanish Tercera Division (third division) after coming on as a substitute. Teto played for the first time at the end of 2021 during a Spanish King's Cup match against CD Ibiza Islas Pitiusas, coming on as a substitute in extra time to help Tenerife win 2-1. At 20, he made his professional debut in the Spanish Segunda Division (second division) in 2022, scoring his first goal against Malaga in their 3-1 win. Following Tenerife's relegation last season, Teto made the move to Johor to join JDT as they chase their 12th league title.
