Rebekah Gardner ready to bounce back, be ‘spark' for Liberty bench

New York Post29-04-2025
Rebekah Gardner watched the Liberty's championship run from the sidelines last season as she rehabbed from an Achilles injury.
But after a 'long and hard' 14-month recovery process, Gardner felt a sense of 'relief' this week as she laced up her 'Reverse Grinch' Kobe 6 sneakers to join her teammates at training camp.
'I put in a lot of work,' the 34-year-old Gardner said Monday after practice. 'When I tore my Achilles it was devastating.'
Gardner fought for her WNBA dream for more than a decade before earning a spot with the Chicago Sky for the 2022 season at age 31.
After an All-Rookie season, the Sky re-signed Gardner.
But Gardner's 2023 season was short-lived.
She suffered a season-ending foot injury in the third game and needed surgery.
Her return to the WNBA court was delayed again less than a year later, when she tore her right Achilles tendon while playing overseas.

The Liberty traded for Gardner's rights before last season knowing that she wouldn't be able to contribute that year.
But New York is about to see the return on that investment.
Gardner, whom the Liberty signed to a training camp deal earlier this year, has the potential to fill the void left by Kayla Thornton's departure in the expansion draft and be the team's go-to reserve.
'She's going to be a real spark off the bench for us and it's great to see her back on the court,' coach Sandy Brondello said. 'And imagine if we had her last year. She's versatile.'

Gardner's conditioning remains a work in progress.
Brondello said it's possible she will play in shorter bursts early this season as she builds that back up.
Overall, though, Gardner is moving side to side well and is getting the feel for her teammates.
Gardner has the tools to be a key piece for the Liberty as they try to defend their title this season.
'She plugs in anywhere,' Brondello said. 'Today, I had her with some of the starters there and she just plugged in and finds a way. And it's great to see players come back there to who they were, but continue to add to it. And I think we're adding to her game, she's going to add to our game so excited about that.'

Nabers showed the type of talent he possesses during his rookie season, but despite his high usage, the end-of-season numbers were not what they could have been. If Wilson can consistently deliver him the ball this season, Nabers should be one of the biggest breakout players in the league, and establish himself amongst the elite pass catchers. New England is banking on a Mike Vrabel-Josh McDaniels-led system as the answer this season. The Patriots have some promising young offensive players in Drake Maye and rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson, and they also made a bet on Stefon Diggs this offseason, in the hope that he can still be a top option as a pass catcher. This is a great NFL matchup that you will not want to miss; make sure to tune in and catch all the action. This is not a nationally broadcast game, but it can still be live-streamed locally on Fubo through NBC (WNBCDT – New York, NY). It will be aired via tape delay later on NFL Network. WNBA sets all-time attendance record despite number of injured superstars

Some of the biggest names in the WNBA have been sidelined indefinitely with various injuries as teams enter the final stretch of the season, but that hasn't stopped basketball fans across the nation from showing up. WNBA officials announced Thursday that the league set a new single-season attendance record, with 13 franchises welcoming more than 2.5 million fans in 226 games this year. And that number is expected to grow as there are three weeks remaining in the regular season and the 2025 WNBA Finals have expanded to a best-of-seven format for the first time in league history. The previous record was set more than two decades ago in 2002 by 16 teams across 256 games. Women's basketball has continued to skyrocket in popularity, both on the collegiate and professional level. Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese's rivalry at Iowa and LSU, respectively, captivated the nation and brought a new audience to the WNBA as viewers followed the budding stars to the pros their rookie season. Incoming rookie Paige Bueckers, who set single-game rookie scoring record with 44 points against the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday, has carried the momentum as the league rewrites attendance and viewership records. Both Clark and Reese have dealt with injuries this season. Clark has missed 22 of the Indiana Fever's 35 games due to various injuries, including 13 consecutive games with a right groin injury. Reese missed seven games with a back injury and recently returned to the lineup in the Sky's loss to the Seattle Storm on Tuesday. MVP frontrunner Napheesa Collier (right ankle) has missed five straight games for the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart (right knee) has been sidelined 11 games. 83825335007 The WNBA expanded from 12 teams to 13 franchises this season, welcoming the Golden State Valkyries. The Valkyries have received unprecedented support in their inaugural season and have sold out all 17 of their home games at Chase Center this season. The league is set to grow to 18 teams by 2030, with franchises being added in Portland, Oregon (2026), Toronto (2026), Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030).
