
Awards Recognise Training Company's Apprenticeship Stars
The achievements of apprentices, employers and work-based learning practitioners from across Wales were celebrated at an awards ceremony in Mid Wales.
Twenty-seven finalists competed for the Apprenticeship, Employment and Skills Awards organised by work-based learning provider Cambrian Training Company.
The awards, held at The Metropole Hotel & Spa, Llandrindod Wells, recognised employers, learners and practitioners who have excelled in apprenticeship programmes delivered by the Welshpool-based company and its sub-contractors.
A popular winner was autistic apprentice Aaron Jones, a waiter at Penycae Inn, Penycae, near Swansea, who received a standing ovation after collecting the Apprentice Special Recognition 2025 Award.
'In receiving this very special award, I am enormously proud and owe it to every single person in the audience but above all to my fellow team of staff at Penycae Inn and to those that have autism and other profound learning needs,' he told the audience.
'As a person with autism who works in the hospitality industry, this award means so much to me. Anybody with a learning or physical disability who is considering doing an apprenticeship should absolutely go for it.'
He praised Cambrian Training Company's hospitality training officers Andrew Addis-Fuller and Leah Williams for their support and encouragement to achieve his goals, which include completing his Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Apprenticeship early next year. The Foundation Apprentice of the Year was awarded to Cameron Long, a cleaning support services attendant at Elite Clothing Solutions, Ebbw Vale, who has completed a Supported Shared Apprenticeship with support from Elite Supported Employment.
Apprentice of the Year was Cai Watkins, head of business unit contract manager for Cambrian Training Company, Welshpool, while the Higher Apprentice of the Year award went to Mathew Verallo, operations manager for The Celtic Collection's Tŷ Milford Waterfront, Milford Haven.
The awards for employers was keenly contested. The Small Employer of the Year was Silver Assist Homecare, Llangorse, Brecon, Filco Markets, Llantwit Major collected the Medium Employer of the Year Award and Achieve Together, Cardiff was named Large Employer of the Year.
Outstanding Individual of the Year was Denise Hodson, a playworker at Little Disciples Childcare, Penymynydd, Flintshire and Welsh Ambassador of the Year was Phoebe Wilson, lead training officer at Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids' Clubs, Cardiff.
Practitioner of the Year was Elfed Wood, from Portal Training, Cardiff, the Employer Special Recognition Award went to The Grove, Narbeth and Kepak, Merthyr Tydfil was recognised for Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships.
'Among our winners and finalists are inspiring stories of personal growth and professional development,' said Faith O'Brien, Cambrian Training Company's managing director.
'This year's awards ceremony was a testament to the dedication, passion and hard work of our apprentices, employers and supporters. From the Apprentice of the Year awards to the recognition of outstanding employers and individuals, each accolade reflects the transformative power of apprenticeships in shaping careers and communities.
'Let's continue supporting and championing vocational education. Together, we can create a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive through learning and development.'
The other finalists were: Foundation Apprentice of the Year Award: Josh Williams, a receptionist at Whitbread Premier Inn, Bangor and Leanne Barratt, a chef at Mitchell & Butlers' Miller & Carter, Killay.
Apprentice of the Year Award: Deanne Rance, area manager for Lonetree-McDonalds, Newport and Jodie Bowater, hotel manager Whitbread Premier Inn, Bangor.
Higher Apprentice of the Year: Ashley Richards, general manager at Peppermint Cardiff and Keri-Ann Evans, head chef at Bluestone, Narberth.
Outstanding Individual of the Year: Rachael Bowles, blending room team leader for Hilltop Honey, Newtown and Aaron Jones, a waiter at Penycae Inn, Penycae, near Swansea.
Small Employer of the Year: Nazareth House, Cardiff and Interplay, Penlan, Swansea. Medium Employer of the Year: Voco St David's Cardiff and The Grove, Narberth. Large Employer of the Year: Kepak, Merthyr Tydfil and Urdd Gobaith Cymru.
Welsh Language Ambassador: Catherine Smith, training officer at Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids' Clubs and Samantha James, restaurant manager at Millie & Sid's, Tywyn.
Work-based Learning Practitioner: Sean Williams from Sirius Skills Consulting, Mountain Ash and Sarah Bird from Clybiau Plant Cymru, Cardiff.

Trespass to design 2026 Commonwealth Games uniforms again
The company has been appointed by Glasgow 2026 as its official uniform partner and will be responsible for supplying the uniform that will be worn by thousands next summer. It comes after the Glasgow-based company designed the red, white and grey uniform worn by the workforce and volunteers at the Commonwealth Games in the city in 2014. The 2026 Commonwealth Games is expected to feature around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories who will compete across 10 sports and six Para sports at four venues. The Trespass brand, which has 299 stores around the world, was established in 1984 in Glasgow by Afzal and Akmal Khushi. They said: 'It's great to be back. When we designed the uniform in 2014, we thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, getting the chance to be part of the Games again, in our home city, and design a second uniform is truly special. 'We know how important the uniform is for uniting the Games workforce and we're now working hard to create a design that's the perfect fit for Glasgow 2026.' Glasgow was last year announced as the host of the 2026 Games after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out due to rising costs. Jade Gallagher, chief operating officer of Glasgow 2026, said: 'It's great to welcome back Trespass to the Games as a returning sponsor for 2026. 'The Games uniform means so much to our volunteers and is the first thing athletes and spectators will see as they approach our iconic venues. 'It is important that we have the best team producing it and we're confident that with Trespass as our partner we will deliver a sustainable and iconic uniform design that will make Scotland and Glasgow proud. 'The people of Glasgow are truly at the heart of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, so it feels fitting that Trespass, a homegrown brand with over 40 years of experience in activewear and a sponsor of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, is returning to design another uniform that will celebrate the city's vibrant culture and unique heritage.' Sarah Quinn, a Glasgow 2014 volunteer, said she is looking forward to seeing the new design. She said: 'Receiving my uniform at the 2014 Commonwealth Games was the moment everything became real. 'Wearing it gave me a sense of belonging to such a unique and exciting experience. 'I can't wait to see the 2026 design.'

Plans for new Bridgend skate park to begin this year It will replace an existing facility that was closed in 2022 How the new Brackla skatepark could look once completed (Image: Maverick Skateparks) Plans to develop a new skate park in Bridgend county borough have been revealed by designers at Maverick Skateparks. The plans were published by the specialist skatepark company for the site that will be created at Brackla Ridge Playing Area near Bridgend later this year. The local council will now work with the UK-based company, which specialises in the design and installation of spray concrete skateparks, over the coming months. Artists impressions show how the finished park, based around two miles from Bridgend town centre, could eventually look once completed with features that include a series of ramps, jumps, and rails along with a new seating area. The site is understood to be replacing an existing skatepark facility that opened in 2000 and closed in 2022 after it reached the end of its economic life. It will be funded by Bridgend County Borough Council with a value of £250,000. He said: 'I'm delighted to see that final plans have been revealed for the replacement skate park facility at Brackla and they will be a high-quality development which will reflect feedback from residents and users. 'This has been developed in partnership with Maverick Skateparks and construction is scheduled to begin in the autumn. 'The artists impressions for the site are hugely impressive and reflect our ambition and commitment towards providing young people with modern leisure facilities.' Cllr Spanswick also gave updates on the local authority's ongoing refurbishments to children's play areas across the borough which he said was almost half covered. Article continues below This scheme will eventually see a total of 98 play areas across Bridgend county refurbished and updated with modern play equipment once completed. The update also followed the announcement that funding worth more than £400,000 had been secured by Bridgend council to restore an artificial sports pitch at Bryntirion Comprehensive that was described as being at the end of its life.

Ayrshire eateries dominate shortlists for the Food Awards Scotland 2025
It's another impressive showing from Ayrshire as a host of businesses have been shortlisted by the event organisers. Businesses the length and breadth of Ayrshire have been shortlisted across various categories in the 11th Food Awards Scotland 2025. For the last decade these awards have been an annual celebration of Scotland's top culinary hotspots. And once again, a host of Ayrshire eateries are in with a chance of landing top prizes. Zain's Curry House (Dalry) and Viking cafe takeaway (Saltcoats) are both shortlisted in the Takeaway of the Year category. The Balgarth Pines Bar & Restaurant (Ayr) and The Dumfries Arms Hotel (Cumnock) will fight it out with nine others for the main prize in the Hotel Restaurant of the Year category. And the The Principal Cafe (Galston) and The Fish Works (Largs) are Ayrshire's two representative in the Best Fish N' Chips Establishment. Kilmarnock-based Artisan Weddings have been shortlisted in the Caterer of the Year category, while Ayr's Vegan Earth is on the Best Vegetarian / Vegan Establishment shortlist. And the Glasshouse Restaurant (Kilmarnock) has been shortlisted for the chance to win the Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year accolade. In terms of the Dessert Outlet of the Year, Nanny Marys (Ayr) is in the running, while Home Cook School (Kirkoswald) has been nominated in the Cookery School of the Year category. And Mr Basrai's World Cuisine (Ayr) has been included in the Buffet Restaurant of the Year category. Another Ayr business, The Drunken Coo, has made the Burger Bar of the Year shortlist, as well as Oceans 11 (Kilmarnock). In the Best Bistro/Diner category, Arranview Cafe Bistro (Galston) is on the shortlist, while Tattie Shack Farm Shop (Monkton), Nanny Marys (Ayr), and Puffers Café (Irvine) made the Deli of the Year shortlist. And Scotts Bar & Restaurant (Largs) has made the Bar & Grill of the Year category. These awards shine a spotlight on the dedication, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit of restaurant owners and teams across the country who work tirelessly to deliver exceptional service and experiences to their communities. Oceanic Awards finalists are selected in a few different ways. There is no fee and anyone can enter as long they fit the criteria of the awards including being operational for a minimum of 12 months. Nominations opened to the public via online platforms and social media, allowing customers and communities to put forward the establishments they love most. Voting will remain open until one week prior to the event. This prestigious final event will take place on Monday, August 25 at the Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central and will see top professionals come together to celebrate their achievements.
