Rupee set to extend rally, riding momentum in Asia FX

MUMBAI (Reuters) -The Indian rupee is poised to kick off the week on a positive note, extending Friday's rally, buoyed by a strength in Asian currencies which included the Chinese yuan's surge to a seven-month high.
The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated that the rupee will open in the 84.98-85.02 range per U.S. dollar on Monday, from its Friday close of 85.2125. The currency had surged 0.92% on Friday, its best single-day performance in over two years.
Friday marked an unexpected turnaround in the rupee's performance. Until then, the Indian currency had largely missed out on the rally enjoyed by its Asian peers.
"Difficult to pinpoint what exactly changed on Friday. In hindsight, it may have been the lack of dollar payments that had been plaguing the rupee, the relentless up move in Asia and finally the collective wisdom that a short (on dollar/rupee) offers value, " a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said.
However, despite Friday's rally, the rupee remains an underperformer among Asian FX this month. While the rupee is down 0.8% in May, the Korean won, Thai baht, and Indonesian rupiah have climbed between 2.5% and 5.5%. Meanwhile, the offshore Chinese yuan has strengthened 1.5% to 7.1650 against the dollar.
BROAD LOSSES ON DOLLAR
The dollar weakened against its major peers and Asian currencies on Monday, with the dollar index (=USD) slipping 0.3% to 98.76 — not far from its year-to-date low.
Expectations of FX revaluation have supported Asian currencies, while U.S. fiscal concerns continue to weigh on the dollar.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday backed off his threat to speed up 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union, agreeing to extend his deadline for trade talks until July 9.
The rapid de-escalation — just two days after the initial threat — underscores the unpredictability and volatility of U.S. trade policy.
KEY INDICATORS:
** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 85.14; onshore one-month forward premium at 13.5 paisa

** Brent crude futures up 0.1% at $64.8 per barrel
** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.51%
** As per NSDL data, foreign investors sold a net $634.6 million worth of Indian shares on May 22

50% Downside For Navitas Stock?

INDIA - 2025/05/25: In this photo illustration, a Navitas logo is seen displayed on a smartphone ... More with a Nvidia logo in the background. (Photo Illustration by Avishek Das/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) Navitas Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: NVTS) has seen an impressive rise, with its stock price increasing nearly 300% from below $2 on May 22nd to over $8 currently. This substantial growth followed Navitas's announcement last month that Nvidia had selected the company to supply power for its next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) data center systems. Navitas specializes in gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) technologies. The company's role will be vital in addressing essential power supply scaling challenges for Nvidia's powerful AI chips, including the highly anticipated Rubin chips, which are expected to replace the current industry-leading Blackwell chips. That said, if you are looking for upside with less volatility than individual stocks, the Trefis High-Quality portfolio offers an alternative – having outperformed the S&P 500 and produced returns exceeding 91% since its inception. Separately, see – QBTS Stock: What's Next For D-Wave After 1,350% Rally? Despite the promising outlook for GaN technology, Navitas Semiconductor encounters significant risks. While the chances of a U.S. recession have decreased with easing trade tensions, ongoing expectations of economic growth slowing do not favor the semiconductor industry, directly affecting Navitas. The company's success is closely linked to the cyclical semiconductor market, which goes through significant boom-bust cycles. Navitas caters to fluctuating sectors such as fast-charging adapters, AI data centers, solar micro-inverters, and electric vehicles. A downturn in these end markets could directly impact Navitas's revenue and growth. The competitive environment intensifies these risks. Navitas faces competition from well-established and capital-rich rivals including Monolithic Power Systems, Wolfspeed, Infineon Technologies, STMicroelectronics, and ON Semiconductor. Several of these companies, like Infineon, Texas Instruments, and STMicroelectronics, are aggressively pursuing the GaN market, which could result in margin compression and loss of market share for Navitas as the technology matures. From a financial standpoint, Navitas shows troubling fundamentals. In 2024, the company reported revenue of $83.30 million but incurred losses of $84.60 million, indicating it is losing more than it earns. Recently, Navitas stock has faced considerable price volatility, underperforming the broader market during uncertain times. For example, NVTS fell 84% during the 2022 inflation shock market correction, a much steeper decline than the S&P 500's 25.4% peak-to-trough drop. More recently, the stock plummeted over 60% this year, from $4 in January to below $2 in April, amidst tariff and trade tensions. In contrast, the S&P 500 index only experienced a modest 19% decline during the same timeframe. The inherent volatility of the semiconductor sector enhances these risks. If growth falls short or the GaN market turns out to be less profitable, Navitas could face severe multiple compression. Its current lack of profitability makes it vulnerable during downturns, lacking the financial buffer of profitable competitors. With minimal profits and dependence on cyclical end markets, any slowdown in GaN adoption or broader semiconductor weakness could cause a significant downturn in its stock price. While the Nvidia agreement could certainly keep the stock price active, investors will eventually consider those prospects against Navitas's high valuation. Currently, NVTS stock has a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 20.5, starkly contrasting with the S&P 500's P/S of 3.0. It is also important to note that the average analyst price target is set at $4, suggesting a notable 50% potential downside for NVTS from its present levels. Fundamentals often take a backseat when investors become enthusiastic about the outlook. To mitigate stock-specific risk while gaining access to potential upside, consider exploring the High Quality portfolio, which, with a selection of 30 stocks, has consistently outperformed the S&P 500 over the last 4-year period. Why is that? As a group, HQ Portfolio stocks have delivered better returns with less risk compared to the benchmark index; less of a bumpy ride, as demonstrated in HQ Portfolio performance metrics.

How China's Lock on Rare Earths Is Pressuring Trump in Trade Talks

China's chokehold on a group of minerals that are critical to making everything from electric vehicles to jet fighters has handed Beijing a powerful tool in its bruising trade fight with the U.S.—a weapon it could wield again in the future. China has managed to shift the balance of power in its fight with the U.S. by leveraging its control over rare-earth magnets, nickel-sized components that are indispensable for powering car motors, industrial robots and missile guidance systems. China's decision this year to cut back on exports of the magnets for just a couple of months sent shockwaves through the global auto, electronics and defense industries.

May consumer prices rise moderately: Instant view

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. consumer prices rose slightly in May as gasoline prices remained subdued, but inflation is likely to pick up in the months as tariffs boost the cost of imported goods. The consumer price index CPI increased 0.1% last month after rising 0.2% in April, the Labor Department said on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the CPI would rise 0.2%. Year on year, the CPI climbed 2.4%, vs a 2.3% rise in the 12 months through April. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI rose 0.1% after gaining 0.2% in April. The so-called "core" CPI inflation increased 2.8% on a year-on-year basis in May after rising 2.8% in April. Inflation data has been slow to reflect U.S. President Donald Trump's slew of tariffs as retailers are selling merchandise that was built up before the levies took effect. MARKET REACTION: STOCKS: U.S. stock index futures erased earlier gains and were last up 18.5 points, or 0.31%, pointing to a modestly higher open on Wall Street BONDS: The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell 3.4 basis points to 4.44% while the two-year yield declined 5.9 basis points to 3.954% FOREX: The dollar index reversed modest gains and was off 0.26% to 98.71 while the euro was up 0.43% at $1.1472 COMMENTS: BRIAN JACOBSEN, CHIEF ECONOMIST, ANNEX WEALTH MANAGEMENT, MENOMONEE FALLS, WISCONSIN: "The post from Trump about the trade deal with China threatened to suck the air out of the importance of this CPI number. A 55% tariff on China does not seem like a good deal for households and businesses in America, but it was slightly better than the 60% tariff platform he campaigned on. "The CPI number was a lot tamer than expected. A lot of imported food items had relatively high inflation, like bananas rising 3.3% in price and toy prices rising 2.2%. Egg deflation is taking place with prices falling 2.7%. A little stability with trade policy could go a long way to help keep inflation from derailing. This is another example of why the Fed may shift its balance of risks to focusing more on growth threats than inflation threats." SLAWOMIR SOROCZYNSKI, HEAD OF FIXED INCOME, CROWN AGENTS INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT, LONDON: 'The CPI printing lower has been a relief. Now we need to clear the 10-year and 30-year Treasury auctions this week and then the market can switch into holiday mode.' GENNADIY GOLDBERG, HEAD OF US RATES STRATEGY, TD SECURITIES, NEW YORK 'The trade policy should still push inflation higher and that really feeds into the market reaction to this CPI print. I would say CPI came in notably better than expected for markets, with both headline and core surprising to the downside. Core goods were softer than expected, especially given weaker apparel prices. Core services were also relatively soft as well, with rents and OER coming in notably lower. 'All in all, this should drive a cautious bull steepening of the (Treasury) yield curve as investors pencil in more cuts. But there's still significant uncertainty around trade and investors know that that should push inflation higher in the months to come. It's a bit of stay of execution for the fixed income market for now.' WASIF LATIF, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, SARMAYA PARTNERS, PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY 'It came in lower than consensus expected. So it's giving a little bit of a relief rally to the market, between equities rallying and bond yields coming down. But that's the initial reaction but we would see how it comes through over the next few days, weeks and until next month's print. "It's just one print and we have to take that into consideration and with a grain of salt and see how things pan out. There will continue to be impacts from things like tariffs and labor tightness because of immigration crackdown. "The other component is the energy piece. It did contribute a little better than expected numbers, with energy being down. And now this past month, you're seeing energy to hold its own and continue to grind higher so that also needs to be taken in consideration. "But net-net, it's a good number for this week and this month. It provides a little bit of relief. What's interesting is not only are you seeing equities jump here a little bit you're also seeing the US dollar decline because the markets is interpreting that it gives the Fed a little of a runway to reduce rates to the inflationary pressures that aren't there. The thing that is rallying the most on this news is gold.' (Compiled by the Global Finance & Markets Breaking News team) Sign in to access your portfolio
