Cornish Pirates 'pretty ugly' in Caldy victory

BBC News21-04-2025
Cornish Pirates joint-head coach Gavin Cattle described his side's 27-24 win over Caldy as "pretty ugly". Pirates trailed 12-5 at the break in the Championship fixture before scoring three second-half tries as they recovered to get their third successive bonus-point win.The victory keeps Pirates fifth in the table with five games to play."It was pretty ugly," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall. "We like looked like we had not a lot of energy in that first half."There was a lot of disjointed combinations in there and we expected to be a bit clunky, but we just didn't quite get that energy for whatever reason."We'll will have a look at that, but I thought the response at half-time in that aspect was better."We left some points out there to close the game, but credit to Caldy, they're a good mauling team and you can see they can play a bit as well."Callum Ridgway put Caldy in front after two minutes before Harry Hocking's try levelled the scores soon after, only for Charlie Hyde to cross midway through the half to give Caldy a 12-5 lead. But a try from Dan Hiscocks before a penalty try and a score from Alex Everett saw Pirates go 24-12 up midway through the second period.Dom Hanson pulled an unconverted try back for Caldy, but Bruce Houston's penalty secured the win for the hosts before Hanson got a second try in the dying seconds."There's no doubt in my head around the hunger and the drive to do well for the shirt," Cattle added."We were just a bit clunky at times. Our backs have been executing really well on the wings, but I felt we threw a lot of missed passes."

Grant McCann ‘couldn't be more proud' after Doncaster humble Middlesbrough

McCann, who made 11 changes, labelled his side's performance as 'top class', with goals from Ben Close, Damola Ajayi, Robbie Gotts and Tom Nixon seeing Rovers comfortably into the second round. 'There was energy, bite, togetherness and quality,' said McCann, who led Rovers to promotion to League One last season after arriving back at the club for his second spell in charge in May 2023. 'For 20 to 25 minutes in the first half I thought it was one of the best performances I've seen since I have been back at the club in terms of how we controlled the game. 'It's always good to test yourself against top Championship managers and coaches and from my team, I couldn't be more proud. 'I said to them in there, we don't have a second team, we have a full squad of 23, 24 first-team players – and we showed that.' The defeat is a first at Middlesbrough for head coach Rob Edwards, who described the heavy setback as 'painful'. He said: 'I've spoken to the lads, they know exactly how I feel. The first thing I want to start with is acknowledging our supporters, how they were with us tonight. We didn't hold our end of the bargain up. 'Doncaster have come here and played extremely well but made loads of changes, a whole team of changes and deservedly won the game. That's not acceptable.'

Stoke boss Mark Robins: We're in the hat – that's as much as I can say really

Goalkeeper Jack Bonham was the hero as the Championship club prevailed after being held to a goalless draw in normal time. Bonham kept out Jonny Stuttle's spot-kick before stepping up and firing home the winning penalty for the hosts. And Stoke boss Robins said: 'We're in the hat for the next round and that's the most important thing I think. 'We're through and that's as much as I can say really. 'We've got to take what we can from the game. 'The lads who haven't got the minutes got that under their belts. 'We've got players who are settling in. But they'll improve. The changes we made it wasn't going to be a flowing game and it was what it was. 'You can't just turn up. Walsall are a good team. Thankfully we've done just enough to get through with Jack scoring that penalty and saving their last one.' Walsall boss Mat Sadler was proud of his League Two side. 'I thought we were so, so good tonight. I have to be so proud of our lads,' he said. 'I think there's been loads of these times we've had. I think back to Birmingham, Exeter and Huddersfield and many more in the last two years. Tonight was another one of those. 'I can be so proud of the players after that performance and the shift the players put in.'

Alan Sheehan hopeful over Malick Yalcouye deal after he saw Swansea beat Crawley

The versatile 19-year-old Brighton player saw Swansea debutant Bobby Wales notch his first goal since joining from Kilmarnock in the summer to add to Ronald's fourth-minute strike. Then another new boy, midfielder Ethan Galbraith, wrapped things up. 'Hopefully we can close the loan deal this week and it will be good to have Malick in the building,' said Swansea boss Alan Sheehan. 'He's a player who will improve us. He has so much energy and he's very highly rated.' Having seen his side go down to a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on the opening weekend of the Championship, Sheehan was delighted at the attacking intent his team displayed at home. 'There were a lot of pleasing aspects in our attack, although we should have scored five or six,' added Sheehan. Crawley are still awaiting their first win of the season, but at least Kabongo Tshimanga was able to give the League Two side their first goal of the season when he scored in the 75th minute. Then the Red Devils saw Gavan Holohan sent off eight minutes later to end their hopes of a fightback. 'We can take some encouragement from the fact we were really present in the game. In the second half we pushed them and we looked like the stronger team before the sending off and potentially could have scored another goal to take it to penalties,' said Crawley boss Scott Lindsey. 'We're probably three players away from building our squad and our treatment room is getting full – it's getting tough and we are a bit threadbare.'
