Has Bentley Officially Surpassed Rolls-Royce?
But first, a quick history lesson. Bentley Motors began life in January 1919 as World War I ended, debuting its first car later that year. The company delivered its first car in the following year and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1927. Then, the brand repeated its wins in the three years following. Rolls-Royce bought the brand when it went into receivership on the heels of the Great Depression. The newly acquired now-subsidiary's first car was a Bentley 3.5-liter that appeared in 1933, powered by a Rolls-Royce engine. The latter part would prove to be a trend as all Bentley models produced after the merger until 2004 relied on Rolls-Royce engines and chassis.
After changing hands in the 1970s, Rolls-Royce (including Bentley) went up for sale in the late 1990s. BMW and Volkswagen were poised to become the inheritors of the luxury crown. BMW was already providing powertrains for Rolls, and took further steps to purchase the name and logo for Rolls-Royce. For a sizable $703 million, Volkswagen purchased the designs, nameplates, and the facilities themselves. But, without the rights to the name and badging, a compromise needed to be met. Thus, VW took Bentley, and BMW got Rolls-Royce. Effective January 2003, the two brands were finally separate entities. After twenty-two years apart, how have they fared?
Let's start with Rolls-Royce. The original nameplate has carried itself well into the 21st century, and 2024 saw the brand deliver 5,712 cars, its third-best recorded. Here, Bentley compares favorably. The Crewe-based automaker delivered nearly double the number of cars as Rolls, with 10,600 cars finding new homes. However, volume is only part of where these brands generate their revenue. Both place a heavy emphasis on customizability; Rolls-Royce has Bespoke, while Bentley offers Mulliner. Last year, Bentley saw revenue per car rise 10%, and a lot of that comes from the fact that 70% of the cars delivered had at least one Mulliner inclusion. Rolls-Royce says, similarly, that it saw a 10% increase in Bespoke content overall, enough to set a record for the brand.
Bentley trounces Goodwood in volume, and profit is a similar story. Bentley reported a profit of $439 million. Meanwhile, BMW reported that Rolls-Royce generated around $140 million in profit, demonstrating that the brand is also very likely making less, percentage-wise, per car than the boys in Crewe. The story remains consistent no matter which arena you pick. Rolls-Royce, overall, accounts for roughly 1% of parent company BMW's profit. Bentley? Last year, despite a downturn in profits, the brand accounted for around 2% of Volkswagen's profit.
We've established that Bentley is making more money than Rolls-Royce, but what does the future hold? Bentley certainly isn't resting on its laurels, just recently announcing three new stores for North America in desirable locations - Santa Barbara, California, San Antonio, Texas, and Oakville, Canada, a Toronto suburb. An exec was recently quoted as saying there's "no real limitation" on what the automaker can or would build you, even offering a pickup truck. Finally, Bentley also laid the ground for a new BEV assembly line back in March 2025. Then, in July, Bentley opened up a brand-new design studio converted from one of its oldest and most heritage-filled buildings. BMW isn't putting Rolls-Royce out to pasture yet, though. Last year, the brand added two new Private Office locations and an invite-only network for Rolls-Royce customers to configure their vehicles. Furthermore, the brand committed around $400 million to expanding manufacturing at the Goodwood facility.
The numbers don't lie. It's a fairly accurate statement to say that Bentley has surpassed Rolls-Royce, at least for the time being. However, even after a century, both brands are still growing. Notably, the big B doesn't have a single all-electric model. Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce has cleaned up with the Spectre, simultaneously attracting a whole new kind of buyer and moving units. It's too early to tell which of these historic luxury brands is going to come out on top, but Bentley has certainly taken the lead, and is obviously working and spending hard to maintain it.

One cloned plate can lead to police letters, insurance claims, even blacklisting from fuel stations – all to someone who's done nothing wrong." also warned that cloning disproportionately affects drivers who own high-demand cars such as German makes or premium SUVs – which are frequently cloned by criminals looking to avoid detection. They said: 'We'd advise drivers of popular models like the BMW 3 Series, VW Golf, or Mercedes GLA to be especially cautious. "Courses are available to drivers who respond quickly to the 'notices' and who were driving at no more than 10 per cent, plus 9 mph above the posted speed limit." So for example, anyone travelling over 86mph on a motorway would not be offered the awareness course. Those who don't have a clean licence at the time of the office, or if you have been on the course in the last three years, it is unlikely you will be offered the awareness course as an option.

India has long been on Elon Musk's radar. But for years, the relationship mostly played out in headlines and half-starts. Remember 2024? Musk was all set to fly into New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Modi — until he canceled at the last minute and popped up in Beijing instead. Anyway, let's take a step back here. Tesla signaled serious interest in the Indian market back in 2021, only to shelve its plans when negotiations over import duties stalled. Starlink, Musk's satellite internet venture, started taking pre-orders in 2021 but had to hit pause after regulatory hurdles forced the company to issue refunds. For the better part of the last decade, Musk's India ambitions have remained just that — ambitions. That's finally starting to change. The recent weeks have been interesting for the Musk-India relationship. Tesla has opened its first showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex. Starlink has received the necessary regulatory approval to launch commercial services in India. And all of this comes just weeks after Musk publicly distanced himself from U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a broader shift in his global strategy. So why the sudden momentum? At one level, India offers Musk a new runway for growth at a time when his relationships in China and the U.S. are becoming more complicated. For India's government, attracting investment from one of the world's most high-profile entrepreneurs is a win that aligns perfectly with the country's "Make in India" ambitions, particularly in clean tech and digital infrastructure. But while the headlines are eye-popping, the reality on the ground shows things are just in the early stages. Let's look at Tesla's current status in India. The idea isn't mass-market dominance, at least not yet. It's about planting a flag in the premium segment. The Model Y, Tesla's most popular car globally, has officially landed in India, priced at nearly 7 million rupees (around $79,000). To put that in perspective, India's best-selling cars typically cost a fraction of that. India isn't a one-size-fits-all market. Alongside its vast value-driven market, a growing luxury segment exists where global brands are fiercely competing for attention. BMW, Mercedes and Audi have been expanding their electric vehicle offerings in India, and Tesla has now joined the fray. The Mumbai showroom is just the first step. India's new policy framework lowers import duties for companies willing to manufacture locally. In fact, in April 2024, Tesla reportedly began scouting locations for a potential EV factory in India, with up to $3 billion in investment. That would have marked a fundamental shift, potentially opening the door to more accessible EV models, boosting supply chain activity and creating new jobs. But now, it's a slow build, not a sprint. And then there's the charging challenge. EV adoption in India differs from that in the other markets. Two- and three-wheelers dominate the electric-vehicle landscape, and most are charged at home using standard outlets. That's why India hasn't yet developed the sprawling public fast-charging infrastructure you see in China or the U.S. For Tesla's luxury buyers, though, fast-charging is non-negotiable. They expect convenience, and that means Tesla will need to invest heavily in public chargers, especially in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, where demand will likely concentrate. Tesla has begun hiring for these roles in India, but establishing this network will take time. Alongside the EV push, Starlink's entry into India could be be tackling an entirely different market: rural internet. Cheap mobile data has fueled India's internet boom over the past decade, but rural areas remain underserved, particularly in regions where laying fiber is expensive and logistically challenging. Starlink's solution is to beam internet directly from space, bypassing those hurdles. But: satellite internet is not cheap. Starlink's service typically costs upwards of $100 per month, which is significantly more than what most Indian consumers pay for internet. That suggests the real play here is likely government contracts and partnerships with rural schools, healthcare providers and remote businesses that need connectivity regardless of cost. Starlink is reportedly collaborating with telecom giants such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to distribute its service, indicating a collaborative approach rather than a disruptive one. The timing of all this is interesting too. Musk's pivot to India comes just after his public fallout with Trump in June, following disagreements over tariffs and subsidies. Whether those two things are directly connected is debatable, but the coincidence is hard to ignore. At the very least, it's part of a broader international diversification strategy for Musk, one that moves him further from the political entanglements of his U.S. relationships. For Indian consumers, the arrival of Tesla and Starlink means new technological options, although for now, these are primarily targeted at the affluent and high-need rural segments. For investors, Musk's India play signals growing confidence in the country's long-term growth story. And as other global tech and EV giants watch from the sidelines, Musk's success could mark the beginning of a new wave of foreign investment in India. Musk has talked about India for years. The difference this time? The groundwork is being laid. The next few months will show whether this is finally the start of something lasting, or just another chapter in a complicated, stop-start relationship. BMW Isn't Going to Like the Genesis GV70's 27-Inch Dash Display
Although there's a push in the industry to return to physical buttons, switches, and dials rather than touchscreen-only controls, there's no going back to a time when cars were screenless. Technology will only become more advanced, and touchscreens are a present reality that's not going away anytime soon. It took BMW several iterations of its iDrive system before it got it right, having started in 2001 in the 7-Series. BMW's iDrive 8.5 is now present on most of the brand's current models, with infotainment screens ranging from 10.7 inches in the 2-Series up to 14.9 inches in models like the 7-Series, X5, and XM. iDrive 8.5 is beautiful, easy to operate, and quick to respond–together with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the expansive setups are the focal point of the premium cabins. However, Hyundai's luxury arm, Genesis, has something to say about that, with a huge 27-inch panoramic OLED display in models like the GV70, which we recently drove. It's sleek, futuristic, and user-friendly-and BMW definitely won't like how good it is. The GV70 has already earned praise for its refined driving manners, powerful engine choices, unique styling, premium materials, and outstanding value. But the 2026 model, part of Genesis's mid-cycle refresh, introduces what could be its most game-changing feature: the massive 27-inch digital display. Unlike many automakers that split screen real estate into separate gauge clusters and infotainment screens, the version in the GV70 is one big swath of electronic goodness with no black frame partition in between. Drivers can split the screen if so desired, but no line of demarcation prevents full-width display. The result is a sweeping curved display that enhances usability while offering a visual smorgasbord of menus and driver data in one stunning layout. Genesis says the screen was inspired by the horizon, a design meant to increase visual calmness while maintaining important vehicular information. The OLED panel delivers vivid color, deep contrast, crisp fonts, and smooth transitions, making navigation, vehicle settings, and media playback feel intuitive and premium. Widgets are customizable, too, and the redesigned interface is easier to read and decipher than BMWs, reducing the time needed to operate functions. Genesis did its homework, and the payoff is one that balances style and user friendliness. Genesis hasn't forgotten those who love to drive, either, being a brand that's committed to excellent physical controls, not just on-screen touch controls. The revised center stack provides knobs for audio, temperature control, and infotainment selection. They're wonderfully tactile with great knurling, and they're also nicely sized for easy operation without having to take your eyes off the road. As we mentioned before, the current BMW Drive 8.5 is one of the best in the industry, after numerous also-ran versions before it. On top of that, the iDrive infotainment system was one of the first to shift control to a rotary knob and screen-based menu system, and the brand continues to innovate with features like natural voice control and augmented-reality navigation. The 2025 BMW X3, now entering a new generation, comes with BMW's iDrive 9 system and a curved display of its own: a 12.3-inch digital cluster paired with a huge 14.9-inch touchscreen, both slightly angled toward the driver. It's a clean, functional setup, but also one that relies on on-screen climate controls rather than switchgear like the GV70's. BMW's recent shift toward touchscreen-only climate controls and deep menu layers for common functions can be frustrating, overly complicating simple operations. While BMW's tech is undeniably powerful, it often feels more like software designed by engineers rather than something intuitive or joyful to use. That's where Genesis not only creates beautiful and seamless screens, but it also carefully thinks about the user experience. The GV70's 27-inch screen seems more fluid in its operation, and climate controls remain accessible through physical knobs below the screen. It seems the Germans prefer a bit of obfuscation, as the menus are visually cluttered and complex. Genesis avoids this, and it speaks volumes about the brand. Yes, BMW still eclipses Genesis sales figures, but the South Korean luxury brand is making some serious headway. BMW still leads the segment in terms of raw sales, but Genesis has become an increasingly uncomfortable competitor in the Bavarian's rearview mirror. In 2023, BMW sold approximately 65,000 X3s in the U.S., while Genesis sold just under 25,000 GV70s -a respectable number for a relatively new player in a game BMW has been playing for a long time. Genesis exhibited more growth than BMW and Lexus, while Audi has dropped. With the 2026 refresh, Genesis is leaning hard into its tech set. The 27-inch display isn't just a flashy update; it's a direct challenge to BMW in functionality and style. Genesis is making a strong statement that it's not just playing catch-up; it wants to lead the pack. That same 27-inch stunner is also in the G70 sedan and GV80 SUV. Watch the cascade continue. Of course, the GV70 isn't just about the in-car technology. It offers a choice of robust engines, including a 300-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a powerful 375-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, both with standard all-wheel drive. The ride and quiet road manners are improved for 2026, yet the GV70 remains responsive, with quick launches and confident cornering ability. Interior materials continue to rival German rivals, with quilted Nappa leather, real aluminum trim, and a clean, airy cabin layout. For 2025, Genesis has also improved cabin ergonomics and updated the rotary shifter and climate controls for a more streamlined experience. The upgraded and much larger screen also gave rise to an improved center stack and center console. Add standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new wireless device charger, and driver-assist features like adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and blind-spot monitoring, and the GV70 continues to check just about every premium box that a BMW X3 can, for a lower price. Genesis is onto something, and it's not just value. When a newer brand matches or exceeds your tech, comfort, and build quality (often for less money), consumers start to question the premium charged for Bimmers. Genesis was once viewed as an also-ran, lacking the power, polish, and technology of the Germans. Just a handful of years ago, Genesis was considered an alternative brand that was more accessible but less desirable. That's no longer the case when you put them side-by-side. Genesis understands this shift in mastery and execution and is capitalizing on it. The 27-inch display is more than a screen, it's a statement that the brand is going after BMW's meal with a big fork and knife. Rather than being a copy of BMW, Genesis is doing things its own way, and sometimes even better than the rest of the field. No one will choose the GV70 over an X3 simply due to the displays, but there's no denying that it's an important part of the sport-luxury SUV conversation. It's the entire package, of course, but the Genesis package is that much more compelling with cutting-edge electronics, great visuals, and smooth operation. 2025 GV70's 27-inch panoramic display won't make the X3 obsolete, but it may make it feel unnecessarily complicated.
