Be part of history: South Africa's braai record attempt for World Hunger Day

An attempt to break the world record for the most number of people braaiing simultaneously will be made on Heritage Day in a bid to provide one million meals on World Hunger Day next year.
At least 2,500 people are expected to braai at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Tshwane, according to the organisers, Big Save Grocery and Liquor.
The company's head of marketing, Dylan Jardim, on Friday said the idea for the attempt came about three years ago when he wanted to do something huge, crazy, and exciting but did not know what it could be.
Although the idea of breaking a world record came up, he was not quite sure which one to chase. Jardim eventually stumbled on a record of the most people barbequing simultaneously in one venue, which he found interesting.

This world record piqued Jardim's interest, and he became even more interested upon establishing that Japan held it.
Japan's Ishigaki City holds the Guinness World Record for the most people grilling/barbequing simultaneously, with 2,220 after achieving the feat in November 2023.
'So from then, I felt that regardless of how it happens, South Africa has to have the record back,' he explained.
Jardim said he told the company's founders and directors that he was planning to get 2,500 people standing on a field all braaiing at the same time.
The idea of feeding a million people with a million meals came up after he met Imbumba Foundation's chief executive Richard Mabaso, according to Jardim.
He said the idea was to use Braai Day (Heritage Day) as a catalyst for the entire event, and all the funds gained from ticket sales will be the initial investment for the World Hunger Day goal of feeding one million people.
'We have the braai world record for an incredibly South African and purpose-driven foundation, where people feel like by attending we are not only bringing braai back to South Africa but helping feed people of this country,' added Jardim.
Officials from Guinness World Records are expected to be present on the day.
'Once we have the right to use their name and logo and all of that, we will. We only have the right from August onwards,' he said.
Tickets will be R200 for the event, and the main headline sponsor is Simba, as well as Pepsi, KFC, All Gold, White Star, and Castle Lager.
Jardim said later there will also be a festival with some of the country's leading musical acts, such as Mi Casa and Booshle G, among others, as well as a beer garden, food trucks, and a kids' area to create a family day atmosphere.
He urged South Africans to come and be a part of history.

Along with Wagener were her husband, Henk, and 21 pupils from Arboretum Primary School. Wagener said Ramklass had to send them the music via video. 'She (Ramklass) made a recording where they all played the song and had different people record the separate parts. Global icon Anthony Hamilton partners to eliminate period poverty and empower young girls
As South Africa shifts from the celebrations of Mandela Month into the fervour of Women's Month, global R&B sensation Anthony Hamilton is stepping into the spotlight to advocate for a cause that unites both commemorations: empowering young girls and eradicating period poverty. This initiative shines a light on a pressing issue faced by countless girls, particularly in disadvantaged communities. Hamilton, who was raised by a single mother, carries a deeply personal motivation for joining this worthy cause. 'This event celebrates us as people. I was raised by a single mother who taught me strength, compassion, and resilience. I am honoured to be part of an effort that builds confidence in young girls as I share my life and my music. I am proud to support this journey of making it lighter for girls by helping to eliminate period poverty and give them hope for a better future,' he remarked. On Thursday, a vibrant activation event geared towards this cause took place at Winile Secondary School in the Zonke iZizwe informal settlement in Katlehong. This school, located in a region grappling with high unemployment and child-headed households, has been a beneficiary of support from the Imbumba Foundation since 2013, which has implemented its Caring4Girls Programme aimed at providing essential dignity packs to girls. Richard Mabaso, CEO of the Imbumba Foundation, highlighted the significance of their long-standing partnership with Winile Secondary School. 'For over a decade, we have walked alongside Winile Secondary School. We started supporting it in 2013, and today, six learners are here representing hundreds of girls who receive dignity packs through our Caring4Girls Programme. To date, we have reached over three million learners nationwide. The upcoming event is more than a concert; it is a lifeline, a symbol of hope, and an opportunity to continue transforming lives,' Mabaso stated. Among the beneficiaries is 16-year-old Refiloe Mofokeng, a Grade 10 learner who expressed her gratitude and inspiration: 'Having Anthony Hamilton here is inspiring. It shows that no matter where you come from, you can still be confident and believe in yourself. This is not just an event for fun. It's about empowering girls like me to dream bigger and feel supported.' Event promoter Mandisa Makhalima stressed the collective responsibility required to tackle the issue of period poverty. 'Impossible to feel sad when you hear them': Watch 1,276 SA marimba players break world record
A group of Marimba players strutted their stuff attempting to set a new Guinness World Record in Cape Town. A total of 1,276 marimba players from South Africa and Zimbabwe lit up the GrandWest Grand Arena in Cape Town on Saturday, August 2, 2025, as they set a new world record. The aim was to have the largest group of marimba players assembled and playing together in one place. The previous world record was 550 players, at a Guatemala event, EWN reported. The feat has reportedly been verified by Guinness World Records. The ensemble brought together talented musicians aged between eight and 62, and represented over 70 schools from South Africa, and two from Zimbabwe.
