These are the 10 best cities in the US according to travel expert — with a shocker No. 1 pick

New York Post16-05-2025
America is home to some incredible places — and one travel expert just shared their top 10 favorite cities in the country.
According to travel writer Hannah Summers, Detroit, Michigan, is the — shocking — No. 1 pick. The Midwest city's recent resurgence helped it earn the list's top spot.
'The revamp and official reopening in 2024 of the once glamorous, then derelict Michigan Central Station symbolised a new era for the birthplace of Motown music,' she wrote in a story for the Times.
'But there had been signs of change and renewal for decades, with fresh, independent restaurants and great community initiatives: the city has a true entrepreneurial spirit.'
San Diego, California, came in second place for her, and unsurprisingly, the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, rounded out the top three. 'There's one city in the US that I urge everyone who loves beaches to visit — Miami. It's a place that has it all,' she wrote about the popular tourist spot.

A head-scratching choice is Providence, Rhode Island, which came in fourth place.
Summers described it as an 'under-the-radar' city that isn't as well-known as Boston, which is an hour's drive south, but that doesn't mean it's not a top-tier city.
The writer raved about the Rhode Island city's food scene — which is filled with up-and-coming 'big-name chefs,' mom and pop donut shops and 'old-school Italian delis in the Federal Hill neighbourhood.'
The Big Apple did make the list, but sadly, further down, earning the eighth place slot.
She mentioned the touristy spots like Central Park and Times Square — 'But there are plenty of other great ways to see the city, from kayaking along the Hudson River to joining an afternoon sailing trip (book via Airbnb Experiences), tacking past the Statue of Liberty.'
Plus, she gave a shoutout to some of the boroughs.
NYC came in eighth place.
Christopher Sadowski
Denver, Colorado, came in last on the list.
Summers mentioned how it's one of the 'most liveable cities in the US' complete with antique shops, food balls, and 'excellent museums such as the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art and the kid-friendly Denver Museum of Nature & Science.'

5. Austin
6. Scottsdale
7. New Orleans
8. New York City

10. Denver
When it comes to where the happiest cities in the world are — that list might be even more of a shocker.
Copenhagen, Denmark, was named the happiest city in the world in 2025 by the Institute for Quality of Life.
Surprising news for New Yorkers — and probably the rest of the country — is that the Big Apple was ranked No.1 as the so-called happiest city in the US.
Year after year, the Institute ranks cities committed to 'cultivating and growing happiness,' according to their site.

Airbnb forecasts quarterly revenue above estimates; plans $6 billion share buyback

(Reuters) -Vacation rentals company Airbnb forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday and announced a new share repurchase program worth $6 billion. Growth of nights booked in the U.S. accelerated each month throughout the quarter ended June, driven by domestic travel, San Francisco-based Airbnb said, adding that it was encouraged by the trend for the current quarter. Several travel firms, like United Airlines and Wyndham Hotels, saw a recovery in U.S. travel demand after a slowdown in April, when consumers initially pulled back spending due to President Donald Trump's shifting trade policy. Airbnb's average daily rates, or the average cost per night, in North America rose 3% in the quarter, driven by strong demand for higher-priced listings. This trend is consistent with other travel companies, including hotel operator Marriott, where bookings for upscale properties and premium offerings helped offset weak demand in the budget segment. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, ADR in Q2 2025 increased 1% and was up across all regions, largely due to price appreciation, the company said. Nights and seats booked, an updated metric which includes the number of services booked, on Airbnb's platform rose 7% in the second quarter, while gross booking value increased 11% to $23.5 billion. Airbnb expects third quarter revenue between $4.02 billion to $4.10 billion, the midpoint of which is higher than higher than analysts' average estimate of $4.05 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. However, the company cautioned that despite stronger night bookings in North America, growth could moderate given tougher year-over-year comparisons in the third and fourth quarters. It expects the implied take rate, or the ratio of revenue to gross bookings, to remain flat in the third quarter. The travel company posted a per-share profit of $1.03 compared to 86 cents in the same period last year.

Airbnb Announces First Financials Since Services Launch

Airbnb's shareholder letter had limited information about its relaunched Experiences and new Services product, but the company said the early signs were promising. The company's shareholder letter said early signals from its relaunched Experiences and the new Services segment, where guests can order everything from private chefs to hair styling at the property, were positive. Airbnb said it processed 60,000 host applications for its recently relaunched Experiences and the new Airbnb Services. "While these new offerings will take time to scale, we're encouraged by the early result

Airbnb Gives Modest Summer Outlook, Warns Growth May Not Keep Up

Airbnb Inc. issued a better-than-expected outlook for the third quarter as it saw encouraging summer travel demand, but warned that growth rates may not keep up later this year due to tough year-ago comparisons. For the three months ending Sept. 30, the short-term rental company said growth on the basis of nights and seats booked — a closely watched metric — is expected to be 'relatively stable' from the 7.4% achieved in the second quarter, Airbnb said in a shareholder letter on Wednesday. That's close to the 7% increase that Wall Street was projecting, according to Bloomberg-compiled estimates.
