Tribal forum calls bandh over flyover ramp work

Time of India17-05-2025
Ranchi:
Tribal communities
on Saturday announced a
Jharkhand bandh
on June 4 to press for the immediate dismantling of the under-construction ramp, as a part of the
Siromtoli flyover
, near the Kendriya Sarna Sthal in Siromtoli stating that it was built without community consultation and violated the spiritual and cultural sanctity of the sacred site.
Coming together, several tribal organisations across the state have formed a united front,
Adivasi Bachao Morcha
, to lead the agitation. The Morcha has announced a series of protests, including a sit-in outside Raj Bhavan on May 27, before the June 4 bandh.
"The ramp may seem minor, but for us, it's a direct interference with our traditions. This is not just about a structure; it's about respecting our identity and religious heritage," said tribal leader Prem Shahi Munda addressing a press conference on Saturday.
The matter is currently under review by the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST). Following complaints from tribal representatives, the NCST reportedly ordered a temporary halt on further work at the site pending investigation.
Beyond the ramp issue, the Morcha is also demanding enforcement of the
PESA Act
.

NCST member visits villages under Chakma Autonomous District Council in Mizoram

Aizawl, Aug 12 (PTI) National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) member Nirupam Chakma undertook an official tour to various villages under the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) to assess developmental requirements and welfare-related issues, an official statement said on Tuesday. The CADC in South Mizoram's Lawngtlai district was formed under the sixth schedule of the Constitution in 1972 for the welfare of the Chakma tribals of the state. Chakma visited Jamersury, Mandirosora, Ajasora, Golasury, and Longpuighat villages, where he held meetings with Village Council members, NGO representatives, and community leaders to hear their concerns, the statement issued by CADC's Information & Public Relations department said. He inspected schools, health facilities, and community infrastructure, observing issues such as shortage of classrooms, non-functional toilets, lack of water supply, poor approach roads, inadequate medical facilities, absence of hostels, and issues related to pre-matric scholarship, it said. The NCST member travelled to these villages by motorboat, as the PMGSY roads connecting them are not usable during the rainy season, it said. Apart from these villages, Chakma also visited Abhaya Dāna Forest Monastery and Huji Mawnaw Vihar, where he attended Buddha Puja and interacted with the resident monks and management committees, it said. He assured that the issues observed during the visit would be taken up with the concerned authorities for necessary follow-up, the statement added. Governor's rule was imposed in the CADC last month following political instability that has rocked the 20-member Council. The Morcha received over 22,300 entries from across all of India's minority communities. Out of these, 1,300 were shortlisted for further evaluation. Following a comprehensive and transparent screening process conducted by a jury, a final list of 27 recipients was selected based on innovation and other defined criteria. Among those selected are youths from the Muslim, Christian, Jain, and Sikh communities. When asked, the national president of BJP Minority Morcha, Jamal Siddiqui, confirmed the award event, scheduled for 12 August. Meanwhile, sources within the BJP stated that the event will be attended by BJP national office-bearers, Union Ministers, and various dignitaries from different fields. The final recipients were chosen from seven zones across the country, designated by the BJP for the purpose of this award. The states from which recipients have been selected include Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Manipur, and others. Sources further told this newspaper on Sunday that the highest number of 408 entries were received from Maharashtra's minority sections, followed by 126 from Uttar Pradesh, 58 each from Karnataka and Gujarat, 49 from Chandigarh, and 38 from Jammu & Kashmir.

SKM calls for nationwide ‘Quit Corporates Day' protest on Aug 13

Hyderabad: The Samyukth Kisan Morcha State Conveners unveiled the poster campaign for 'Quit Corporates Day', calling for statewide protests on August 13. The Morcha gave the call while releasing a poster on Tuesday. Conveners condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's recent threats of imposing 25% tariffs on India and punitive measures over India's oil trade with Russia. 'These are not just trade tactics—they are weapons aimed at sovereign nations,' said speakers, accusing American corporations of coercing open access to Indian markets. Equally criticized was the Indian government's 'silent capitulation', especially its signing of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which they argued sacrifices national interests for foreign profit. Protest organizers warned that such deals would devastate India's farmers and laborers by flooding markets with cheap imports and dismantling protections for local industries. 'The India-US trade deal being negotiated is a blueprint for corporate plunder,' said one speaker, citing fears that agribusiness giants could exploit India's dairy and agriculture sectors, triggering price collapses, widespread unemployment, and environmental degradation. Campaigners highlighted concerns over healthcare and pharmaceutical monopolies enabled by CETA, asserting that British firms would increase medicine costs and seize control of public health infrastructure. The central government was also criticized for what the conveners described as an aggressive privatization agenda that undermines rights to water, forests, and land under the pretext of development. The Samyukth Kisan Morcha urged farmers, workers, students, and citizens to mobilize in district centres, mandals, and villages. The day of resistance will include roadshows, vehicle rallies, demonstrations, and symbolic acts such as burning copies of trade agreements and effigies of Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the CETA pact. Demands include immediate suspension of all US-India trade negotiations, a parliamentary review of CETA, and full public transparency in future trade deals. 'We will not let history repeat itself,' declared organizers, likening current policies to the colonial exploitation of the East India Company. August 13 will mark a modern echo of the Quit India movement, with farmers and workers pledging to defend national sovereignty and resist corporate imperialism, they added.
