‘Disrespect' towards Pradyot Kishore: Tipra Motha youth wing shuts down govt offices in Tripura's Gomati district

Indian Express02-06-2025
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma's Tipra Motha, Monday went ahead with its shutdown of government offices in the Gomati district.
The YTF is protesting against the alleged disrespect shown towards party supremo Pradyot Kishore and Purna Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, when the duo went to meet the Gomati district magistrate in his residence and were turned back at the gate Sunday.
The Tripura Police made adequate arrangements to tackle the agitation and deployed thousands of security personnel. Hundreds of agitators attempted to breach security barricades and engaged in scuffles with the police.
'There will be deployment of nearly 1,000-2000 police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel. Besides, we have been given civilian officers and experienced officers from the police headquarters. Our primary objective is to ensure that no one interferes with any official duty. We are trying to ensure less inconvenience for the public. For this, we have separate arrangements for traffic,' said Souvik De, Additional Superintendent of Police, a day before the shutdown.
Pradyot Kishore attended an event in South Tripura Sunday and was travelling to Agartala in the West Tripura district. On his way, he reached out to Gomati District Magistrate T K Chakma, whose residence is in Udaipur, which is on the route to Agartala.
However, the Tipra Motha leader, who was accompanied by Jamatia, was allegedly denied entry by the security guards at the gate. Pradyot told journalists that he had been trying to get in touch with the DM regarding some administrative issues, but his phone calls had not been answered.
The YTF condemned the incident, sought action against the DM and declared a shutdown at all government offices in the Gomati district. YTF President Suraj Debbarma stated on Sunday that if the Tripura government does not take action on the issue, the agitation will spread to other districts of the state. Tipra Motha is a ruling ally in the BJP-led state government.

With one exit and two additions, Goa cabinet sees a rejig

Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on Wednesday resigned from the Goa cabinet, citing personal reasons, paving the way for a cabinet reshuffle in the state. In a letter addressed to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Sequeira, who was also holding Law and Judiciary, Legislative Affairs and Captain of Ports portfolios, said he was 'compelled' to take the decision to resign from the Council of Ministers due to 'personal reasons'. Two new Ministers – Ramesh Tawadkar and former chief minister Digambar Kamat – will be inducted in the Sawant-led cabinet, and the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Raj Bhavan at noon on Thursday. At a press conference at the Secretariat, Sequeira said, 'I am not giving (the resignation) on health grounds because I believe I have improved drastically. I am resigning due to personal reasons. I think I will be relieved of a lot of responsibilities that I had taken on my shoulders. I have no issues with the party. I will continue to be a member of the BJP. I was toying with the idea (of resigning) for some time. I received whole-hearted support of the CM in my tenure.' Sequeira denied he was under any pressure to quit. On whether a Catholic legislator will replace him in the cabinet, he said, 'I do not know. This is a question that you should pose to the chief minister.' In his resignation letter, Sequeira thanked Sawant 'for giving me the opportunity to serve under your leadership.' Sequeira's exit leaves two cabinet berths vacant. The first fell vacant after former Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude, a tribal leader, was dropped from the cabinet in June after he levelled corruption allegations in the department of Tribal Welfare – a portfolio held by Sawant. Senior BJP tribal leader Ramesh Tawadkar, the Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly, confirmed that he would be inducted into the cabinet. Tawadkar, who represents Canacona constituency, said he will resign from the Speaker's post on Thursday, and thereafter he will be sworn in as a minister. 'I wanted to continue as the Speaker, but the party has decided to give me this responsibility. The party organisation wanted me to take this post. So, I have to abide by the party's decision,' he said. Sequeira will be replaced in the cabinet by former chief minister and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. Sequeira and Kamat were among the group of eight turncoat MLAs who switched over to the BJP in September 2022. 'I am getting an opportunity to serve the people of Goa. I am thankful to God, the central leadership of the party, and the chief minister,' Kamat said.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday criticized the BJP's proposed Bill that seeks to simplify the removal of ministers arrested on serious criminal charges. Speaking on the issue, Rahul Gandhi said the Bill reflects a regression to 'medieval times" when rulers could dismiss officials at will. #WATCH | Delhi: Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi says, 'There is a lot of action going on about the new Bill that the BJP is proposing. We are going back to medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at will. There's no concept of what an elected person is," the Congress leader said. The LoP further accused the ruling party of using investigative agencies to target elected representatives. 'He doesn't like your face, so he tells ED to put a case, and then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days," he added. In response to upcoming Vice President election, Gandhi also brought up matter of sudden resignation of the former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'Also, let's not forget why we are electing a new Vice President. Just yesterday I was having a conversation with somebody and I said, you know, where is the old vice president gone? He's gone….," he further said. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Bill seeks to remove any central or state minister who faces allegations of corruption or serious offences and has been detained for at least 30 days. 'Towering figure': Mallikarjun Kharge introduces B Sudershan Reddy; calls VP poll an ideological battle

Joint opposition alliance with VP candidate B Sudershan Reddy (Image: X/@kharge) NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday introduced former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, the opposition's vice-presidential candidate, as a 'towering figure' in Indian jurisprudence. He said Reddy was celebrated for landmark judgments and his commitment to social, economic and political equality. Kharge stressed that the upcoming vice-presidential election was not merely about occupying an office but an 'ideological battle for the soul of the nation.' While the ruling party upheld the ideology of the RSS, he said, the Opposition stood firmly by the Constitution and its values. 'B Sudershan Reddy embodies the timeless values of justice, equality, and inclusivity that fuelled India's freedom movement and form the bedrock of our Constitution,' Kharge said. Formally introducing Reddy to leaders of various Opposition parties at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (Old Parliament), Kharge said Reddy was chosen for his lifelong commitment to constitutional values. He accused the BJP government of discriminating against the opposition for the past 11 years and alleged that bills were being rushed through Parliament without proper debate. 'The Modi government has been passing bills hastily. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The Speaker has also played a role in this by not allowing MPs to speak,' Kharge alleged. The Congress chief added that Reddy's nomination was a pledge to restore fairness, impartiality, and dignity to the Rajya Sabha, which he claimed had been in decline. He also criticised the government for introducing key bills at the end of sessions, leaving little scope for scrutiny, and accused it of misusing agencies such as the ED, CBI and Income Tax Department to target Opposition leaders. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed Reddy, saying the country was witnessing a struggle between those defending the Constitution and those seeking to undermine it. He alleged that while the BJP had 'stolen' elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, the public would now resist such attempts in Bihar. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal announced that a mock poll would be held on September 8 to prepare MPs ahead of the vice-presidential election scheduled for September 9. The meeting was attended by several senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar , Ram Gopal Yadav, Tiruchi Siva, Sanjay Raut and Shatabdi Roy, along with other Opposition MPs.
