How do you feel stepping into the new role as district secretary?
While continuing as the state vice-president of AISF, I'm taking up this new responsibility with confidence. The Left movement is going through both challenges and opportunities across the country. Our duty is to position ourselves as a creative, secular, and democratic alternative, combat all forms of communalism, maintain LDF unity, and popularise the government's pro-people policies.
There have been tensions between CPI and CPM, especially in Vypeen. How do you view this?
The issues in Vypeen are minor, mostly related to elections in some cooperative banks. These will be resolved. I'm confident we'll move forward as a united front, especially ahead of the local body elections.
What about differences within the CPI?
In any democratic setup, differences of opinion are natural. Currently, there are no such rifts within the district. All constituency conferences concluded peacefully. Even the district committee was elected unanimously.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Wednesday, said the DMK government should ignore the opposition of the caste outfits in the issue of enacting a separate law against honour-based crimes and pave way for a 'democratic revolution'. Mr Thirumavalavan met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with CPI and CPI (M) state secretaries, R. Mutharasan and P. Shanmugam, on Wednesday. On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observed a day's fast led by its SC wing leader, M.P. Ranjan Kumar, inside the Sathyamurthy Bhavan. Mr. Thirumavalavan pointed out the Hindu Marriage (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 1967, which legalised self-respect marriages, and the implementation of Mandal Commission's recommendations, providing 27% to backward classes in government jobs and in education, also faced stiff opposition from upper castes and dominant castes. 'These were accepted by the larger society over time. The separate law is not a law in favour of scheduled castes. Honour-based crimes are national phenomena – such crimes are happening across communities and States and even within SCs and OBCs. Even recently, an OBC boy attacked another OBC boy for speaking to a girl from his own caste. It is a law against regressiveness and backwardness. CM Stalin should ignore the opposition of caste outfits as the democratic forces within these communities would welcome it,' he told The Hindu. He explained to Mr Stalin about the need for a separate law to tackle such crimes and give it a special focus just as we have separate laws for crimes against women, Scheduled Castes and so on. 'We have given him several references that reiterate why such a law is needed as recommended by National Commission of Women, Law Commission of India, Supreme Court's directives in Shakti Vahini vs Union Of India case and bills introduced as private member bills in Parliament and also a Bill introduced by CPI-M MLA A. Soundarrajan in 2015 in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Even Rajasthan has introduced a separate law against it. We take pride in calling Tamil Nadu a land of social justice and we talk about Dravidian model. He listened to us patiently. He didn't give us any assurance but we hope CM Stalin would enact a separate law. It is needed today,' he said.

MoSPI proposes new base years for IIP, GDP & CPI
Synopsis The government plans to update the base years for key economic indicators. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will shift to a 2022-23 base year, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be rebased to 2024. The new CPI will draw weight of items from the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24."The Ministry is underway to revise the base year of GDP, IIP, and CPI," MoS for Statistics and Programme Implementation Rao Inderjit Singh informed Lok Sabha. Nakkapalli Bulk Drug Park project opposed at public hearing
Mild tension prevailed at the public hearing conducted by Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) on the Bulk Drug Park (BDP) project proposed at Nakkapalli on Wednesday, with the police detaining CPI(M) leaders and activists on charges of obstructing the programme. CPI(M) Central Committee leader K. Lokanatham, who was detained, said that this public hearing for the bulk drug project was held after Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in January this year. 'Not only the local residents but also a section of leaders and activists of the ruling coalition partners are opposing the project. However, the government is using the police force to conduct the public hearing without giving all stakeholders a chance to speak their mind,' Mr. Lokanatham said. The CPI(M) leader said that he was detained by the police during the public hearing and taken to S. Rayavaram police station, around 15 km from the venue. 'The police released me in the evening. A total of six candidates from our party were also detained,' he said. CPI(M) Anakapalli district secretary G. Koteswara Rao told the media that many locals and environmentalists raised red flags about the environmental and public health risks posed by the bulk drug park project. 'With this project, Nakkapalli will become like Jeedimetla of Hyderabad. We all saw how some areas such as Patancheru, Bollaram, Sangareddy, Jeedimetla in Hyderabad are suffering due to pollution and poisonous gases emitted by the industrial units there,' he said. People from fishing villages attended the public hearing held near the MRO office in Nakkapalli. They protested against the project. 'We are already witnessing recurrent accidents in pharma companies in Parawada mandal. Nakkapalli is proposed to be a bigger pharmaceutical hub than Parawada. The government shifted the project from Kakinada after facing strong opposition there,' said a villager. As per the guidelines for the scheme for promotion of BDPs introduced by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers in March 2020, the BDP project was proposed at Nakkapalli in Andhra Pradesh Bulk Drug Park in 1270.80 acres by M/s Andhra Pradesh Bulk Drug Infrastructure Corporation Limited. The total estimated project cost is ₹1257.75 crore.
