DK sees 108 new schools in the last five years

Mangaluru: While govt-aided and a few unaided schools in Dakshina Kannada received zero admissions, leading to the closure of these institutions, the district has been approving a substantial number of new schools each academic year. Data reveals that from 2020-21 to 2025-26, the district approved a total of 108 schools. All of these are aided and unaided institutions. Interestingly, many of the 108 approved schools belong to minorities. Govinda Madivala, DDPI, Dakshina Kannada, explained that in the academic year 2025-26 alone, a total of 24 new schools were approved to start or upgrade their schools. "The total number of applications received every year is increasing, and this year alone, more than 36 applications were received," he said, adding that to start a school, a total of 28 requirements need to be met. Sources from the department of school education and literacy said that among the 108 schools, many were given permission to start new schools with a primary section, whereas the rest were to upgrade from existing primary schools to grades six to eight, and others to start a secondary section. "A majority of the new schools were started in Mangaluru, North and South, Bantwal, Puttur, and Belthangady BEO limits. There is significant demand for private English medium schools in rural areas of the district," said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Serbia Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. "Many start, but it is hard to sustain since schools have to charge affordable fees," he said. Another school representative said there are stringent rules to open a school and run it. "Failing to meet one single criterion results in rejection of the application. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Intel, Lockheed Martin among companies investing in India's semiconductor push

NEW DELHI: Strengthening India's efforts in attaining self-sufficiency in the critical semiconductor segment, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved four semiconductor projects, entailing a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore, with one of them being backed by US chipmaker Intel as well as defence and aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin. The projects will come up in Odisha, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh, IT & Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. The proposals were approved under the India Semiconductor Mission, which initially started the country's semiconductor manufacturing push with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to provide financial support for those setting up chip manufacturing facilities. 'This is a new industry that we have started in India, and we were able to make a breakthrough after trying for decades previously. We will build upon this. The demand for semiconductors is building up every month, every day. And the way these projects are being set up and are scaling up, I think we will be able to have significant production in our country as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme. To me, it appears that this is just the beginning,' Vaishnaw said while briefing about the new projects and also those that started previously. The minister said that a silicon carbide semiconductor plant will be set up in Bhubaneswar with an investment of Rs 2,066 crore by SiCsem Pvt Ltd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Invest 18K/Month Get Offer Undo "Silicon carbide is a very robust material and can sustain at high temperatures. Silicon carbide is used in our missiles, satellites, telecom towers, rockets, railway engines, etc.' The plant will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. The Cabinet also approved US chip major Intel-backed 3D Glass semiconductor manufacturing unit in Odisha with an investment of Rs 1,943 crore. The plant will be set up by Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions with an annual production capacity of five crore units. Vaishnaw said the project will be backed by US firm Lockheed Martin as well. It is understood that the two American companies have invested in the project for sourcing the production, and also as part of their financial investment plans. A chip packaging plant in Andhra Pradesh, to be set up by Advanced System in Package Technologies with an investment of Rs 468 crore, was also approved by the Cabinet. It will have a capacity to produce 9.6 crore chips per year. The cabinet also cleared a semiconductor project of electronics component maker firm CDIL. The facility will be set up in Punjab with an investment of Rs 117 crore, having an annual production capacity of 15.8 crore units. Vaishnaw said the plans for semiconductor come at a time when the country's electronics manufacturing sector has grown six times to Rs 12 lakh crore in the last 11 years. Exports of electronics has grown eight times in the same period to Rs 3.3 lakh crore and mobile production has increased 28 times to Rs 5.5 lakh crore. The minister said India will host Semicon India 2025 in partnership with four countries-- Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Korea from September 2 to 4. There has been considerable success in development of semiconductor ecosystem in India after the central govt had come up with a Rs 76,000 crore incentive package in December 2021. Under the plan, govt had extended fiscal support of up to 50% of a project's cost to eligible display and semiconductor fabricators. India – which had previously failed to get any credible proposals for semiconductor manufacturing after trying for decades – had finally managed to score big when American Micron emerged as the first major player to enter the space with a Rs 22,500 crore testing and packaging unit in Gujarat in June 2023. This was followed up with approval to three proposals worth Rs 1.26 lakh crore in February 2024. These were -- Rs 91,000 crore project of Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd to set up India's first semiconductor fab unit with Taiwanese Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp at Dholera in Gujarat; Rs 27,000 crore Semiconductor Assembly and Test (TSAT) unit by Tata in Morigaon, Assam; and Rs 7,600 crore project of CG Power with Japanese Renesas Electronics and Stars Microelectronics of Thailand.
