New video of ‘spy' Jyoti Malhotra with BJP's Muraleedharan on Vande Bharat fuels controversy: What we know so far
Later, a purported video showed Jyoti interacting with former Union Minister and BJP leader V Muraleedharan.
Jyoti Malhotra was arrested on May 16, a few days after Operation Sindoor, on suspicion of espionage. She is a resident of Haryana's Hisar.
Police alleged that Jyoti "was in Pakistan before the Pahalgam attack, and the investigation is on to establish linkages, if there are any." It was claimed that she used to go to Pakistan, 'like on sponsored trips.'
The RTI reportedly revealed that Jyoti Malhotra was invited by the Kerala Tourism for the campaign to promote tourism in the state.
According to Mathrubhumi, a query under the Right to Information (RTI) Act revealed that the Kerala government funded the trip of 41 influencers chosen to promote Kerala as a global tourist destination.
Jyoti Malhotra was among these 41 influencers.
The state government reportedly paid for their travel, accommodation and food. It roped in a private agency to help them with shooting videos during their stay.
After RTI made such revelations, a video surfaced on social media showing Jyoti Malhotra with BJP leader Muraleedharan during the inaugural run of Vande Bharat Express from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram in September 2023, news agency PTI reported.
Mint could not independently verify the video.
The controversial YouTuber, who was invited by the Indian Railways, could be seen travelling along with invited guests, including BJP leader and the then Union Minister V. Muraleedharan and the then BJP State president K. Surendran.
In the video, the BJP leader can be seen telling her, in English and Malayalam, how the train would benefit the people of the state.
Following such news reports, Muraleedharan claimed that his name was being dragged into the issue by the state government to escape from the controversy.
He alleged that the state government was on the defensive ever since information emerged that the Tourism department sponsored Malhotra's visit to Kerala.
According to PTI, the BJP leader said that many people took his response during the inaugural run of the Vande Bharat train and one of them was Malhotra, but he was not the one who invited her to the state.
He also questioned what procedure was followed by the state when it brought the social media influencer.
Some BJP leaders, including spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, cited an RTI reply to claim that Malhotra had visited Kerala on an invite of the state government. "So Bharat Mata is blocked and Pak spies are given red carpet by the Left," Poonawalla had said.
The Communist Party of India said it "strongly condemns the BJP's attempt to drag the Kerala government into the Jyoti Malhotra espionage case to cover up its own grave failures on national security."
CPI MP Sandosh Kumar said it was outrageous to suggest that a state government was responsible for a YouTuber's travel to Pakistan when passport issuance, visa clearance, and intelligence monitoring are all under the control of the Union government.
Kerala Tourism Minister P A Mohammed Riyas, who had recently brushed aside the allegation as "worthless propaganda", reiterated on Tuesday that the government was not aware of what Malhotra was involved in when she was invited to the state.
He said that the government also did not receive any adverse information about her from any of the agencies.
"She went to states ruled by various political parties, including the BJP. Now, some BJP leaders want a probe into the matter. The intention behind all this is only to create unnecessary controversy," Riyas claimed.
Under fire over the participation of alleged spy Jyoti Malhotra in a Tourism department event, the LDF government on Tuesday received support from the most unexpected quarters, with the opposition Congress.
Leader of Opposition in the state assembly V D Satheesan said had the government known she was a spy, it would not have invited her to the state.
"No one knew she was carrying out espionage when she was here. So, what can be done about that? We are a responsible opposition, we do not blame the government unnecessarily," he was quoted by PTI as saying.

No-confidence motion against Sarpanch passed in Kolhapur village
Kasba Beed, a village in Kolhapur, passed a no-confidence motion against its sarpanch belonging to the Shiv Sena. Uttam Varute, the sarpanch elected in 2023, was removed from his post in the motion passed on Thursday. Of the eleven gram panchayat members, 10 were from Congress while one was elected on a Shiv Sena ticket. They brought about the no-confidence motion due to dissatisfaction with the work of the sarpanch, with the lone Shiv Sena member also recently joining the Congress. The Maharashtra Village Panchayats (Amendment) Act, 2022 allows for the gram panchayat to remove the sarpanch by passing a motion of no-confidence, which has to be initiated by three-fourth of the members. The motion then has to be ratified by the Gram Sabha. This motion can only be bought in after the sarpanch completes two years in office. The act reads, 'After the motion of no-confidence against the directly elected Sarpanch is carried by a majority of not less than three-fourth of the total number of the members, who are for the time being entitled to sit and vote at any meeting of the panchayat, then the same shall be ratified by the Gram Sabha, in Varute, however, said that he was removed without any reason and he made all decisions with consensus. 'Without any reason they have removed me as the Sarpanch. I have not indulged in any corruption or anything like that. I have taken all members along and given work to everybody. They have never even opposed me before this. They are making the allegations now but they did not oppose me before this. I am not opposed to this law that allows for the Sarpanch to be removed but this has been used unjustly before me. I will contest the election again,' he said. Mukund Patil, a resident of the village, said, 'When elections were held for the public to vote, there were two symbols — a circle for those in favour of the no-confidence and a triangle to reject it. There are 5,000 people in the village, of whom 3,200 are eligible to vote. A total of 1763 voters turned up. Those who wanted to vote would had to register between 8 and 11 am. Then, voting took place between 11 am and 4 pm. This wasn't EVM but the old-style ballot paper. When the results were declared, it was found that 1022 were in favour of the no-confidence.'

'Na bijli ayegi na bill': BJP leader mocks ally Nitish Kumar's poll promise
BJP leader Arvind Kumar Sharma mocked JD(U) ally Nitish Kumar's promise of free electricity in Bihar, saying it would be free only if supplied. 'Na bijli ayegi na bill ayega,' he quipped Uttar Pradesh's Energy and Urban Development Minister, Arvind Kumar Sharma, took a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday over his recent announcement of free electricity. Commenting sarcastically on the scheme, the BJP leader said, 'Electricity is free in Bihar but it will be free only when it will be supplied... na bijli ayegi na bill ayega... free ho gayi. Hum bijli de rhe hain (we are providing the electricity),' as quoted by PTI. VIDEO | Mathura: UP Energy and Urban Development Minister AK Sharma (@aksharmaBharat) on free electricity up to 125 units in Bihar, says, "Electricity is free in Bihar but it will be free only when it will be supplied... na bijli ayegi na bill ayega... free ho gayi. Hum bijli de… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 19, 2025 Bihar approves 125 units of free power The statement comes a day after the Bihar Cabinet on Friday (July 18) approved a plan to provide 125 units of free electricity each month to domestic consumers across the state, starting August 1. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar in Patna. According to a government statement, 'The state government will pay additional ₹3,797 crore on electricity consumption to the Bihar State Power Holding Corporation Ltd for the purpose.' The government -- led by BJP and JD(U) -- also announced that financial support would be given to households for installing 1.1-KW rooftop solar power systems. Solar energy push over next three years CM Kumar added that in the next three years, solar power plants will be set up on rooftops or nearby public spaces with the consent of domestic consumers. 'We have also decided that in the next three years, with the consent of all these domestic consumers, solar power plants will be installed on their rooftops or at nearby public places to provide benefits,' the CM said. For extremely poor households, the state will cover the entire cost of solar panel installations. Other families will receive aid under the Kutir Jyoti scheme. He said this move could help generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar power within the next three years. Bihar elections: Pre-poll welfare measures The announcements are being seen as part of a broader set of welfare schemes in the run-up to the Bihar Assembly elections later this year. A day before the electricity announcement, CM Kumar had instructed the Education Department to assess the number of vacant teaching posts and begin preparations for the next Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) 4. In a post on X, the chief minister said the free electricity plan would benefit nearly 1.67 crore families. 'We have been providing electricity to everyone at affordable rates from the very beginning. Now we have decided that from August 1, 2025, that is, from the July bill itself, all domestic consumers in the state will not have to pay any money for electricity up to 125 units,' he stated. Political dynamics after 2024 general elections It is worth mentioning here that JDU's support became indispensable for the BJP after the 2024 elections. For the first time since 2014, the BJP did not secure a majority on its own in the Lok Sabha in 2024. The Janata Dal (United) emerged as the second-largest ally in the NDA, after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Together, the JDU and TDP became crucial for the NDA to maintain a majority in Parliament and for the BJP to form the government. As a result, Nitish Kumar's political importance has grown, with his party securing more influence both in cabinet posts and in policymaking.
