Ruben Amorim remains coy on Manchester United transfer plans, Benjamin Sesko links
Hojlund, who has been linked with a move away this summer, opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a composed finish from a Patrick Dorgu cross. It was a goal that underlined his growing confidence - and perhaps served as a timely reminder of his value amid the club's rumoured interest in Sesko.Amorim, while addressing the speculation surrounding H¸jlund, appeared to advocate patience with the Danish forward."The important thing is Rasmus is scoring goals," he said. "I don't know what will happen until the market is closed. The important thing is the strikers here are working really well, are improving, are helping the team."It was the second time on the night Amorim used near-identical language when pressed on the club's interest in Sesko - a clear signal of his intention to deflect such questions and avoid fuelling the speculation.Despite heavy rain at Soldier Field in Chicago, United produced one of their most complete performances of pre-season. Goals from H¸jlund, Dorgu, Amad Diallo and substitute Ethan Williams capped off an emphatic win that extended United's unbeaten run this summer.Dorgu, in particular, impressed with a goal and an assist, while Diallo continued to build on his promising form. Bruno Fernandes operated in a deeper role, and his understanding with Diallo drew praise from the manager."I think it was really important - the connection with Amad. The ability to control the ball inside and outside, to maintain possession. That made a real difference today," Amorim said.Amorim reserved special praise for Dorgu, who turned in a mature performance at both ends of the pitch."He looks more like he belongs at Manchester United, and that is hard to do at 20 years old. He is so powerful, he's getting his technique, he's defending well, pressing well - I'm really impressed with him."After the interval, United showed no signs of slowing down. Diallo added a third in the 53rd minute before Amorim made wholesale changes in the 70th, introducing nine new outfield players. Among them was teenager Ethan Williams, who scored within a minute of coming on to make it 4-0.advertisementAn unfortunate own goal by Matthijs de Ligt - who had replaced Harry Maguire at half-time - gave Bournemouth a late consolation, but it did little to take the sheen off United's performance.Despite the mounting speculation, Amorim offered no indication of imminent arrivals or departures, repeatedly returning to the progress of his current group."We are more competitive, and that is really important. We suffered a lot last season. We had some issues in the corners, defending. But we attack really well. We have a lot to do, but it's a good feeling seeing the team play like this," he said. With just a few weeks left in the summer transfer window, questions around United's striker situation - and their reported interest in Benjamin Sesko - are unlikely to go away.- Ends

Sesko Battle: Manchester United, Newcastle In Race To Sign RB Leipzig Striker
Last Updated: The 22-year-old has been touted as hot property in a market with a dearth of natural goal scorers, and United would look to snap up the Leipzig star. Premier League giants Manchester United look to address their striker woes by roping in RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko, but will have to hold off stiff competition from fellow English side Newcastle United for the signature of the Slovenian. The 22-year-old has been touted as hot property in a market with a dearth of natural goal scorers, and United would look to snap up the Leipzig star in a bid to improve on their abysmal showings last season. In the latest development in the pursuit, United could sweeten the pot by adding current striker Rasmus Hojlund as part of the deal to make the passage for Sesko's switch much more convenient. United are believed to have made the striker their top priority in the transfer window, while English forward Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa also remains an option. Sesko netted 13 times and set up five assists in 33 outings for Leipzig in the bygone season of the Bundesliga to help his side finish seventh in the German top-flight with 51 points to their name from 34 games. United, who finished a lowly 15th in the Premier League in what was a forgettable season under Ruben Amorim, who took over the team midway through the campaign following the departure of former coach Erik Ten Hag, would look to return to winning ways as they endure a period of transition like never before. However, the Red Devils will have to fend off moves from Newcastle, who have also expressed interest in the services of the young forward amid concerns over the future of star player Alexander Isak, who looks to be forcing a move out of the Tyne-side club. The Swedish superstar looks to be angling for a move to Liverpool, who have splashed cash around in the ongoing transfer window shelling out big money for the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. United have already bolstered their attacking line with the acquisition of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as they look to navigate a pathway to restore the club back o its former glory. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 10:55 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Not Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo… who has the highest career transfer fee?
Joao Felix has become the latest European star to join Saudi League following his move to Al-Nassr. Once touted as a young prodigy to watch out for when he began his career at Benfica, Felix hasn't been able to nail down a spot for himself in Europe's top leagues despite playing for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, AC Milan, the former Premier League champions accepted his move to Al-Nassr. After Atletico signed him for a record fee of £113m in 2019 from Benfica his stocks dipped when was acquired by Chelsea for just £47.2m in 2023. Mid-way through that season, he was sent on loan to Barcelona before returning to Chelsea for the 2024 season and spent the last season at Milan. And on Wednesday, ended up in Saudi league for £26m. According to Transfermarkt, despite being just 25, the Portuguese has so far gone for £194.89m in transfers, making him the player with the fourth-highest career transfer fee. There are three players who are ahead of Felix in this list with Lionel Messi not even in the top-10. Here are the top three. Ahead of the 2003 season, when Alex Ferguson brought him to Manchester United fending off interest from rivals Arsenal, the English giants paid £16.4m for the then 18-year-old, who would hit his prime at Old Trafford. After spending seven seasons with the Red Devils, Real Madrid acquired him for a then world-record fee of £81.17m, with whom he reached his peak, winning three Champions League titles on the bounce. Then ahead of the 2019 season, Juventus came calling for the Portuguese and spent £101.03m for the 33-year-old before he returned to United in 2021 for £14.86m. Following his free transfer to Al-Nassr in 2022 where he signed a reported £175m-a-year deal, his five transfers have cost £213.28m. The Belgian forward has divided opinions, particularly in the Premier League where he had stints with West Brom, Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United. He has also left his footprints with Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli and with nine transfers. Like Felix, his fees once skyrocketed before it fall flat in recent times. After his splendid season with West Brom, Everton paid £3.02m for a season-long loan before making him a permanent in 2014 for £30.53m. In 2017, United spent £73.14m to acquire his services before Inter put an end to his mixed stay at Old Trafford for £63.90m in 2019. Chelsea then raised eye-brows two seasons later, when they brought him back to the Premier League for £97.57m. With the forward struggling for form and place, he was sent on loan to Inter and Roma for a combined fee in the region of £11.80, Napoli finally bought him for £25.90 that takes his overall tally to £318.82m. Leading the list with £345.39m is the former Brazilian forward, who has managed a humongous sum with just three transfers. After catching the imagination of the world during his time at Santos in Brazil, it didn't take long for Neymar to set the stage on fire. After a dramatic transfer battle during the peak years of El-Clasico rivalry, Barcelona landed him to Camp Nou for £75.99m in 2013, where he formed one of the most lethal front three the world has seen. With Messi and Luis Suares for company, they were nicknamed 'MSN' as they landed a famous treble against all-odds. During his four-year stint with Catalan giants, he won 8 titles before PSG lured him to Paris, where he would be the sole lead. The prospect of not being the shadows of Messi played a part too, but PSG had to pay a whopping £189.97m for their prized asset. Unfortunately for Neymar, he could never replicate the success and form he enjoyed at Barca as PSG struggled to lay hands on Champions League despite uniting him with Messi and Kylian Mbappe also for company. After six years, Al-Hilal landed him for £77.71m before he decided to head home to Santos to finish his playing career. Below the top four are 5) Ousmane Dembele – £189.97m, 6) Alvaro Morata – £179.60m, 7) Antoine Griezmann – £177.88m, 8) Matthijs de Ligt – £170.54, 9) Matheus Cunha – £165.96m, 10) Philippe Coutinho – £155.69m.
