Killeen Fire Captain Laid to Rest
COPPERAS COVE, Texas (FOX 44) — A funeral was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove for Killeen Fire Captain Marvin Taylor III.
Hundreds of people across the Central Texas community gathered at the church to say their final goodbyes to Captain Taylor.
A procession followed the service, led by the Killeen Fire Department, traveling from Holy Family Catholic Church through Killeen and ending at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery in Georgetown.
He served with the Killeen Fire Department for over a decade and was promoted to captain in the summer of 2024. Taylor was also recently assigned to the training division.
The Captain unfortunately lost his life on Sunday, May 11, 2025, in a car crash — he had just left the hospital after the birth of his fifth child.
The City of Killeen and the Fire Department are dedicated to keeping Captain Taylor's legacy alive.

"Lemonade and Leashes" raises money for hundreds of animals at Garland Animal Shelter
An 8-year-old animal welfare advocate served up refreshing lemonade on Sunday to raise awareness and help dogs at the Garland Animal Shelter. "Today I'm doing my one-year anniversary lemonade stand to help animals at the shelter," 8-year-old Ben Fuentes said, as he served up sweet treats to help four-legged friends in need. Deana Seigler is the president of Friends of Rescue Animals, a non-profit organization that operates the volunteer program at the Garland Animal Shelter and Adoption Center. "We are doing 'Lemonade and Leashes' at the Garland Animal Shelter to raise awareness with the community about the dogs here at the shelter," Seigler said. The help needed for man's best friend is critical. Alberto Maldonado, the shelter's community outreach coordinator, said they're taking in increasing numbers of animals. "We do about 150 intakes per week, so them being able to take up some of that vital shelter space helps us by so, so much. We're able to go ahead and bring in more animals and help out more," Maldonado said. The event promoted the importance of fostering at the event. "Foster homes give a dog a break from the crazy, noisy shelter," Seigler said. "It allows them time to decompress, where we can learn what their true personality is like in a home." The adoptable dogs put their best paw forward going on walks with potential fur parents at the fundraiser. "We have dogs from 6 pounds to 120 pounds. We have purebreds," Maldonado said. 6 horses killed in barn fire in Northwest Chicago suburb
A barn fire left six horses dead in northwest suburban unincorporated Harvard, Illinois, overnight. Just before midnight, firefighters were called to a pole barn on the 19100 block of Crowley Road that had caught fire with animals inside. Firefighters had limited access to water, so the fire was upgraded to a second-alarm fire. For the hour-long fire response, water tenders and portable tanks were brought in from neighboring departments. A total of six horses died in the fire, Harvard officials said. No other injuries were reported. The barn was significantly damaged and considered a total loss. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Harvard Fire Protection District.

Lakewood Church demolition starts, steeple preserved after fire
FLINT, Texas (KETK) – Lakewood Church members started demolishing their former church building on Sunday, after the structure was irreparably damaged in a fire on April 14. Flint church holds fundraiser after devasting fire deemed total loss in April Sunday was the day of Pentecost and church members said that day was special in that it marks a new beginning for their church. 'Today is the day of Pentecost and it just so happens that it's all starting today and that's the day of fresh beginnings, the day God started a new thing on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus died. And so that is also a new thing for us, that we're starting this new building,' Lakewood Church pastor Raymond Graham said. 'God will make all things new.' While the building and most of the things inside it were unsalvageable, they were able to carefully remove the church's steeple.
