Ben Affleck defends his 'broke' nepo babies after refusing to buy son Samuel $6K sneakers despite $150M fortune
Ben Affleck defended his 'broke' nepo babies after he went viral for refusing to buy his teenage son $6,000 sneakers.
The 52-year-old actor shed insight on his parenting style while chatting about his teenage kids having jobs during Tuesday's episode of Today with Jenna & Friends.
He previously made headlines after a video of him went viral, in which he criticized his son Samuel, 13, for asking for a pair of Dior Air Force 1s with the whopping sticker price.
On the talk show, the Batman star, who recently dished on his failed marriage to Jennifer Lopez, explained why he refused to buy them for his son — in spite of his alleged $150 million net worth.
In addition to his son Samuel, Affleck also shares his teenage kids Violet, 19, and Fin, 16, with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
'He wanted these sneakers, and I was like, "These sneakers are $6,000, what are you talking about? What are you gonna do, mow lawns? You got $6,000?' Affleck joked as he recalled their interaction.
'He was like, "We have the money." I was like, "I have the money! You're broke."'
Affleck reiterated that he 'wants to give them everything' but believes his children 'have to work' for what they want.
'You love your kids. You want to give them everything and do everything for them, but I think you definitely do them a disservice by not connecting [if] you want something that you want, you have to work for that.'
Then, the Gone Girl star explained that his two oldest kids are already working.
'Yeah, my oldest two have jobs,' he replied when guest co-host Andy Cohen brought up the topic.
'In fact, one just got a job, the kind of classic teenager working a shop job — I won't say what it is. My older one in college is working and trying to get an internship for the summer.'
He continued about his youngest child now coming to age and learning the money lesson from his father.
'And yeah, my son, who's 13, he's reckoning with that reality right now,' Affleck said.
'He's looking at no shoes in his closet. Well, he's got shoes, just no crazy expensive fancy shoes,' he added.
'And I'm like, "Well, if you want that, you can work 1,000 hours." You know what I mean? Minimum wage. And once you work 1,000 hours, you may not want to spend that on a pair of sneakers.'
The Accountant alum recalled the shoe-related learning lesson occurring back in March when they enjoyed a father-son outing at a sneaker convention.
While the two sneakerheads were perusing through the space, a pair of shoes caught Samuel's eye.
Meanwhile, Affleck was caught up by the price tag.
'That's a lot of lawns you gotta mow there,' the actor jokingly told his son in the video. Affleck also said his son only liked them because they were expensive before the teenager insisted, 'No, they're tough. I always said they look good.'
Later that same month, Affleck stood firm by his decision at the South by Southwest premiere of his The Accountant 2 movie.
'That's what happens when you tell a motherf***er they have to mow the lawn,' he told Access Hollywood.
'All of a sudden, they don't want those shoes, and he was like, "But I always said they were tough." I'm like, "Man, you do not need $1,000 shoes." He's like, "We have the money." I'm like, "I have the money. You're broke."'

American Psycho director vows no one can replace Christian Bale in 'remake'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The original American Psycho director has had her say on the upcoming reboot rumors, vowing no one else could echo Christian Bale's efforts in the iconic film. Mary Harron's take on Bret Easton Ellis' satirical novel was released 25 years ago, on April 14, 2000, with the Batman icon leading the star-studded cast as Wall Street yuppie-turned possible serial killer Patrick Bateman. In recent months, it has been claimed the movie will be getting the remake treatment, helmed by filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, with Austin Butler and Patrick Schwarzenegger among those linked to the main role. During an appearance at the 25-year anniversary screening at Tribeca Film Festival, Mary spoke to Metro about the reboot speculation, and who could possibly step into Patrick's designer shoes. When asked whether American Psycho needs to be remade, she told us: 'I personally don't, but obviously that's how I would think. 'It could surprise me, and be completely phenomenal, and something I would never have imagined…' Discussing who she could see taking over from Christian, she continued: 'No, I really can't [imagine anyone else as Patrick], because also to me, it's just fixed in my mind. I can't reimagine it in that way. 'But good luck to them. I'm just glad… It's amazing to me that people are still this interested 25 years on – and more successful now than it was 25 years ago. 'When it first came out, audiences didn't know what to think about it. I remember in the very first screening at Sundance, people didn't know whether it was supposed to be funny or not. 'Now I think people can enjoy a lot more because they know, 'Yes, it's okay to laugh at this!' Parts are supposed to be funny.' Mary also shared her surprise at how relevant her take on American Psycho still is, 25 years on – suggesting that we're 'seeing' similar themes in society today. 'I would never have imagined [the relevancy today],' she added. 'It's so funny, I was in a bookstore and I saw there was a game, some weird American Psycho board game. I don't love that, but it's like, 'Okay, that's strange.' 'It's definitely taken on a scary life I would never have imagined. The film is the film, it's not going to change, it's made, and I'm glad that people seem to get something out of it. 'I'm sad that, in a way, that it has remained so relevant, because that means that a certain heartlessness of the culture, this validation of really psycho businessmen… We're seeing it right now.' American Psycho, set in the 80s, has gone on to become a cult classic despite a grim plot. Christian stole every scene as Patrick Bateman, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux and Chloe Sevigny. Despite appearing in a string of projects before the creepy Wall Street banker, it is still considered to be one of his breakthrough roles before he popped up in the Machinist, the Batman trilogy and the Prestige. Shedding light on his early career in a 2022 interview, he revealed that he was earning so little at that time, he feared that he could lose his home. 'I'd taken so long trying to do it, and they had paid me the absolute minimum they were legally allowed to pay me,' he told GQ. More Trending 'And I had a house that I was sharing with my dad and my sister and that was getting repossessed. 'So the first thing was: 'Holy crap. I've got to get a bit of money,' because I've got American Psycho done, but I remember one time sitting in the make-up trailer and the make-up artists were laughing at me because I was getting paid less than any of them. 'And so that was my motivation after that. It was just: 'I got to get enough that the house doesn't get repossessed.'' Got a story? Ageas Cooljazz returns to Cascais with a line-up you simply can't miss
It was in the green embrace of Jardim da Parada, in Cascais, with drinks and nibbles all around, that Ageas Cooljazz unveiled its 2025 edition. And there are plenty of reasons to mark July in your calendar already. The festival is celebrating 20 years with one of its strongest line-ups ever: 28 concerts, four Lazy Sundays, and loads of surprises promising to light up evenings (and late afternoons) along the coast. Ageas Cooljazz 2025 runs from July 4th to 31st, featuring seven big concert nights and four free-entry Sundays, blending comfort, nature and quality music in one unique setting. It's all about staying true to the soul of jazz and soul, while leaving plenty of room for diversity – in genres and in artists. Opening night, on July 4th, welcomes two unmissable acts: the brilliant Benjamin Clementine, master of voice and theatricality, and Portugal's own Rita Vian, who fuses fado and electronics. From there, the line-up just keeps on giving: the legendary Seal, rising star Margarida Campelo, and Brazilian sensations Gilsons and Jota.pê bringing a splash of Brazil to Cascais. This year's programme also sees a clear boost to female representation and a renewed focus on jazz itself. And while music is at the heart of the festival, everything else matters too: Ageas Cooljazz remains a model of sustainability and inclusion – with zero waste, over 600 meals repurposed daily, accessibility and free events for everyone. One of the big new features is the revamped Lazy Sundays stage, now set in Jardim da Parada, with DJ sets and performances from musical personalities like Ana Moreira, Catarina Moreira & Friends, Leonor Caldeira, Manuel Cardoso and Diogo Beja. Sundays come alive with music from 6pm to 9pm, all free of charge. After sunset, the party keeps going with the Late Night Sessions at Parque Marechal Carmona, featuring the likes of Mafalda Nunes, Groove Armada (DJ set), Rui Maia and Peter Castro. There's also space for up-and-coming talent with the Ageas Cooljazz x Smooth FM competition, this year crowning Razi, Bokor, Beatriz Nunes, Plasticine and Berlim. With a line-up bursting with variety, a laid-back vibe, delicious food and drink, and a real commitment to social responsibility, Ageas Cooljazz is once again proving why it's one of the town's most beloved festivals. July in Cascais? It's all about jazz at sunset.
